“We believe, in the not-too-distant future, the core games that aren’t cloud-assisted will be in the minority,” he said.“It’s true that developing with distributed computing paradigms is complex and requires skills not commonly found within the games industry — but we started Cloudgine with the specific goal of making the transition as smooth as possible. We are achieving this by cloud-enabling well-known and understood game engines and middleware solutions such as Unreal Engine 4, Havok Physics and Nvidia PhysX to work in a distributed environment with no additional effort for the developers. They can keep using the development environment they are already familiar with, and our cloud platform transparently takes care of all the intricacies of distributed programming.”

I heard the massive destruction is MP only, so that's like saying MP is only good until your internet goes out.

That being said, I still have some doubts, like maybe in a test setting they can nail this kind of environmental destruction with the online servers, but how will work when tens-of-thousands of gamers are destroying cities online?

@lamprey263: it is only MP for crackdown, but this seems to be talking about in the future having most core games being cloud computing assisted

The entire console industry is going to be 'cloud based' next gen. Sony Gaikai, MS Azure what ever you want to call it, it's almost guaranteed.

Will it be good for everyone? Absolutely not, a large percentage of people have crap internet speeds, unreliable connections and limited bandwidth.

Will the companies heading it up care?, Absolutely not, they stand to make far greater profits and gain complete control of their system and games. On top of that they don't need to design, manufacture and distribute millions of consoles, which all goes to diluting profits. No feeding a second hand market and losing all that money from re-sales.

My advice, if you want to keep 'console' gaming start looking at where you can get a good internet connection.

Same could be said of MMOs, MOBAs, and any other online-only game. Hasn't stopped those genres from becoming some of the most widely played in the world.

And be honest, how often do people's internet connections go out? It's perpetually mentioned as this huge problem, but I literally don't remember the last time my Cox internet went out, and I hardly live in a major population center.

@Bruin1986: yes, but it would seem they're thinking of future core games using cloud computing, not just online multiplayer based games. And if it requires the MS/PSN network then you don't just need to worry about ISP failures/slowdowns but also the networks going down which we have all seen happen a number of times

Infrastructure is getting better and better, albeit slowly due to these damn private companies. They've actually stepped their game up in Canada, and the "unlimited" plans are reasonably priced. Cloud-based computing will definitely become more and more viable and popular. We're just in that awkward tween phase, where you get the gross pimples.

Not really excited for this one, though I'd definately like to roam around destroying things for awhile.

It will be interesting to see what's capable with this kind of tech. I however don't think it should be relied upon too heavily since people with shoddy pings will end up getting shitty experiences.

You know, this would of been a good way for Microsoft to pitch the always online policies they originally had.

I can see cloud computing being offloaded to personal PCs. It would resolve the ping issue and alleviate the "online" reliance.

that is not cloud computing and would completely defeat the purpose of Cloud computing.

"We believe, in the not-too-distant future" brb in 2025 when Xbone 3 is out. Until then, Xbone is stuck with 2005 resolutions.
