Two months ago, Microsoft said it didn't have specific plans to create an Xbox VR headset. What it didn't say is that it had been working on a device, but put existing VR plans on hold until better technology comes along.
Microsoft courted partners over the past couple years to create games for a virtual reality headset designed to work with the Xbox video game console, according to people familiar with the matter. While the physical designs of the device weren't widely known, the screen quality specifications were considered good -- but not as good as those for Facebook's rival Oculus Rift or HTC's Vive headsets, the people said.
arlier this year, however, Microsoft started telling partners it was putting its Xbox headset plans on hold. Two people familiar with Microsoft's thinking said the company decided to wait until promising new tech like wireless headsets were more feasible. Today, high-end headsets like Sony's $299 PlayStation VR, Facebook's $399 Oculus Rift and and HTC's $499 Vive rely on long and bulky wires plugged into their respective devices in order to work. Wireless adapters meanwhile, add about $300 in cost.
The move wasn't much of a surprise to partners and those briefed on the device, considering Microsoft has largely stuck to a supporting role during VR's recent renaissance, led by Sony, HTC, Steam game store owner Valve and Facebook's Oculus VR. And you could argue it's a smart strategy.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (right) has said he believes VR will change the way we use computers.
Facebook
So far, the VR market has struggled to win over a mass market of consumers. Analysts believe Sony has sold the most high-end VR headsets, tallying 3 million PlayStation VRs soldsince that product's launch in 2016. In May, Facebook released its $199 Oculus Go, a midlevel standalone VR headset. Though Facebook declined to disclose sales data, SuperData Research estimates it sold 289,000 units in the three months ended in June. That may not seem like much when stacked against the 41.3 million iPhones Apple sold during that same time, but the researcher said it's better than what Facebook's higher-end Oculus Rift did in the second half of 2017.
All told, VR today is a mixed bag. "Virtual reality may yet become a massive mainstream hit, but it's not going to happen with this generation of tech," CNET's Dan Ackerman wrote in April. "It's time to throw in the towel."
Flirting with VR
Microsoft's decision to hold back its VR plans comes after a series of public fits and starts.
Rumors that Microsoft was building a gaming headset began as early as 2012, when what were supposedly internal plans leaked online. That was the same month the first Oculus headset prototype debuted at the E3 video game conference in Los Angeles.
By 2015, Microsoft was instead touting a relationship with Facebook, which bought Oculus the year before for over $2 billion. Back then, Microsoft said it would offer gamers a chance to play Xbox games using the Rift headset. The company, in the meantime, was also increasingly focusing efforts on its well-received HoloLens mixed reality headset, which overlays computer images on the real world.
"Oculus had such a head start," Xbox head Phil Spencer said at the time. "It's good for Windows, and it's good for Xbox."
In 2016, Spencer said he wanted to make sure any Xbox VR headset brought something "unique" to the table. "I don't think the unique add is to plug into the Xbox One console," he said. "That's not the magic unlock to me."
In the meantime, Microsoft created a set of features for its Windows 10 operating system software for PCs known as Windows Mixed Reality, which was released late last year. This technology allowed companies like Dell, Lenovo, Acer and HP to build headsets based on VR technology Microsoft developed, launching for as little as $399.
But the Windows Mixed Reality headsets got a mixed reception, and prices were cut by as much as half earlier this year. Microsoft had already decided to focus on VR for Windows rather than Xbox at that point, a person aware of Microsoft's discussions said. But the response didn't help, another person said.
During the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, this June, Microsoft's chief marketing officer for gaming, Mike Nichols, made it official. "We don't have any plans specific to Xbox consoles in virtual reality or mixed reality," Nichols told GamesIndustry.biz.
Well, not anymore.
To plant a flag, or not
Not much about the design of Microsoft's Xbox VR headset is known. Those privy to early briefs said the device wasn't particularly designed to break new ground. Instead, an Xbox VR headset was discussed as being more of a competitor to Sony's PlayStation VR, whose screen quality and visuals are considered good, but not the best in the industry. The Oculus Rift, HTC Vive Pro and Samsung Odysseyoffer the best-quality images among the widely available headsets, according to CNET's reviewers. (Facebook's expected to show off a next-generation Oculus headset next month.)
Microsoft's approach stands in contrast to the marketing for the Xbox One X, an upgraded Xbox released in 2017 that was touted as the most technically powerful video game console on the market. Some of the people in discussions with Microsoft wondered why it would sell such a powerful console and then plug in a relatively so-so headset to go with it.
But there's another and potentially more pressing question Microsoft would have to answer if it released an Xbox VR device: "Do Xbox gamers really want VR?" said Brian Blau, an analyst at Gartner who used to work in the VR industry. Gamers, he noted, tend to be vocal about what they want to buy from companies, and he hasn't noticed many people clamoring for an Xbox headset.
"I haven't seen the gamer community rally around VR like they have other things," he added.
As news spread that the Xbox VR headset was being put on ice, the justification some people in Microsoft gave was that the company wants to show what it can do with the next generation of VR technology, which they said they hope can create sleeker and potentially wireless designs.
In the meantime, it appears Xbox fans will have to wait.
@daredevils2k: Careful dude. Posting articles from major software/hardware publications calling the PSVR high end makes certain rabid lems' heads explode. They'll be up in here with gifs/memes/essays in no time.
Soooo I take it HoloLens production has been scrap?

And if you put title that has "VR" you know who's gonna show up lol.
@BenjaminBanklin: Some would no doubt, most would not, but as a "team Xbox guy" i would never support it as it sucks arse, maybe you should get in touch with a few of the herd and let them know that lol.
Is this really surprising though, as virtual reality has had the hardest time getting its foot into mainstream gaming. And I dont understand why, because the first time I used virtual reality in a gaming experience it was to die for. I guess just keep my fingers crossed.

It sucks, huh? Yet you've never tried it. So in other words, you don't have a clue and never can have a valid opinion until you actually seriously try it.
Another Headset on the market would just make VR even more of a muddle than it already is.
I feel VR would have been in a much better place right now if manufactures had worked towords making a 'VR standard' all headsets could have used as opposed to 3 or 4 exclusive devices that splinter the market in different directions.

The OpenXR API standard is actively being worked on, backed by basically every big manufacturer, new cable standards are ready for new headsets, and foveated rendering + eye-tracking is being worked on to be standarized as well.

From your perspective, obviously. If someone were to take a neutral stance on this topic and ask myself and yourself about the state of VR, they'd practically roll their eyes at your comments.

I mean why would I want to play games like this to form an opinion that it is indeed shit

You just picked a random game. Next time try picking one of the highly rated games, as anything else doesn't show off how good VR can be.

There's a highly rated VR game, or is it a normal game with a VR mode in it? I mean I only ask as you're the self proclaimed VR expert.

You could always play one of each. And this is the key word, "play" because videos are never going to give you any indication how it feels to play.
But if I had to list two, then Lone Echo + Echo VR for a true VR game, and Hellblade for a VR port.

Both are incredible, and get high praise.
So you found one ground up VR game that has 14 reviews for a 89 score, congrats, and Hellblade doesn't count as its a normal game.
Do all/most VR games get so little people reviewing them?

You really think I can stop there? I can find plenty more. Also I said I would specifically list one port and one exclusive. A port it may be, but it's very different in VR, and ultimately much better.
Do me a favor. Go fight each boss in Hellblade on a 4K monitor. Then do the same in VR. Then tell me how much better the VR experience was.
VR games get less reviews because there's less of a userbase for now.

I don't want to play Hellblade at all, so that's a no from me.
Xbox has less of a userbase than the PS4 and has around the same amount of reviews for games. The real reason there isn't many VR reviews is because not many people actually care for VR (there's like 4 people on here) hence the very low userbase.

And with that my work here is done lol.
You'd be right. But not for the reasons you think. The average gamer doesn't care for VR, literally because they haven't tried VR yet. Most people just haven't gotten to the point of trying it. And this was expected by all the manufactures for gen 1. Gen 1 is always niche. No technology is exempt from this.
It will take time, but people will start to care about VR. There's a reason why people are generally converted after trying it.
I've taken a couple of gambles in the past (namely Kinect) which wasn't ready for mass adoption. They made the right move. VR will be a thing soon, but it needs some time to mature and more powerful GPUs are needed to take the experience to the next level.
@BenjaminBanklin: X1X is more powerful than pro, yet you ask if its strong enough for VR?
Psvr is Sonys Kinect. Fun for a while, and it still has a small amount of fans, but ultimately it's a novelty and a fad along the lines of 3d TV.
That's why ms haven't released a vr set for Xbox....nothing to do with power.
PSVR has it's own hardware in it to add with the PS4 for VR experience. I thought they said the X1X was supposed to be able to handle VR out the box from existing devices. I'm not sure if that's a misquote.
But anyway, the real answer is, if VR isn't huge for Sony, then MS doesn't want to do it. PSVR will only remain a niche item for the Playstation.
The problem is VR is just a neat experience and wears off quickly. Feels awesome to try for the first time, then you realize this is it, it hasn’t gotten any better, you end up waiting for the tech to advance.

the games to play right now is Elite Dangerous and a Racing game but I forget the name I think Project Cars.
VR will start once Valve finishes up its multiple VR projects.
I will let you know when that is, its not right now
So all those that spent £100's on VR set ups may as well of waited until the man from valvemonte gives his nod?
yes actually that would be better.
keep in mind I spent $600 on my VR headset, I wish I had waited.
$800 on mine. It's been completely worth it because I actually keep up with content. If a good game releases, I get it. I keep an eye out for future releases too.

I dont use mine as much as I would like namely because of all the wires and setup. But the new standard has fixed that problem so I am looking forward to those hubs being released.

bro do you have any idea how much money some men spend on strip clubs? god damnit!
anyway..that aside like i said:
1. I highly suggest people wait and buy the second generation not this generation of VR
2. I dont give a good god damn 6&*( *(^&(*^ about selling you or anyone else VR. dont like it fine no fucks given. I really am not remotely interested in trying to convince people who think McDonalds is the bomb that a good restaurant is worth it, not remotely interested in convincing them of that.

You wouldn't need to spend 600 dollars. He spent his 600 in the past when prices were higher. Now it's $400 for a Rift.
And there are plenty of great games other than Elite Dangerous.
And then there are lots of non-gaming uses as well.

people who are not remotely interested in the concept of VR enough to look into it, will never be into it.
@tryit: too much rage type, you got randomn characters going everywhere in your post.
Maybe if you took off that headset off and stopped jerking off you could get some oxygen back to your brain and make a point.
again..lets try and stay on topic and stop being fascinated by something as mundane as jerking off.
Jesus kids who cares!
back on the topic of VR, I should point out that I am currently listening to Pink Floyd on $500 headphones, so money when it comes to what I want really doesnt play a huge factor
