Final Fantasy XII: $49.99.

Halo 2: $54.99.

Perfect Dark Zero: $59.99.

Halo 3 Legendary Edition: $129.99.

Gears of War 2 Chainsaw Bundle: $149.99.

Seriously, this is getting crazy. The standard "70 dollar collectors edition" was now been bumped up to 80 bones. Look at games like SoulCalibur IV, Spore, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, Fable 2, etc.

The only collector's edition I ever bought was Half-Life 2, cuz it was $40 and I got a T-shirt (which I still wear)

I don't forsee myself ever buying another collector's edition again, I collect games, not overpriced crap.

I disagree. Both Halo 3 and Gears 2 have 70 dollar editions with extra content. The ones over 100 dollars are for the really hardcore people who want a toy helmet or a toy chainsaw gun.

It's fine.

I completely agree. 60.00 is bad enough just to get the game that is your sole incentive behind your purchase to begin with. There is no way I am going to shell out more, just to get different artwork on the case, and a bunch of junk that will eventually get tossed in a drawer, lol. It appeals to some folks though, and I have done it plenty of times in the past, myself. But, thankfully I eventually realized how much money I was wasting.

My main problem with Collector's Editions is the current trend of giving you much less for more money. Back in the day when Halo 2's collector's edition was released for a mere $5 more, I felt like I was getting my money's worth. After all, I got a completely different themed instruction manual, an additional small Covenant themed booklet, a DVD and the metal box. For $5 more. That, in my eyes, is totally worth it. Bioshock's Collector's Edition? A behind the scenese DVD, CD sampler, Special Edition case and limited edition Big Daddy figure? All for only $10 more? Score.

Nowadays, publishers are content on giving you a cheap metal tin (Yeah Halo 3, I'm looking at you), a behind the scenes DVD and maybe an art book and demanding that you pay $20 more for it. While I didn't feel slighted by Halo 3's CE since it was only $10 more, but that Legendary Edition and the majority of today's CE's can go die in a fire for the price they're asking.

If they are asking 80-90 bucks, then I kind of want 80-90 bucks worth of stuff.

lol I know, it was a joke... but on a serious note, that stuff would have been cool when I was a kid but I just don't see the appeal any more, I mean I have actually spoke to a WOW player in town and he was having some conversation with his friend (who was also my friend and that's how we met) and he was talking about purchasing all the collectibles. I mean the game is like class A drugs and yet despite the subscriptions some people will go above and beyond to pay for anything official with the WOW brand on it. This is madness..

Maybe it's because Collector's Editions are just getting out of hand. Anyone see the Saint's Row 2 one? That's just excessive and crazy, same goes with the Grand Theft Auto IV one.

I like my CE/SE/LE to stand out, but not to be a giant distraction. Again the MGS4 LE was well worth it, same goes with the Final Fantasy XII one, Unreal Tournament III had a good one as well, even though I never got it.

Yeah, CE are worthless. Oh yay, a crappy and poorly made figurine, a "behind the scenes" dvd, which the scenes have already been uploaded onto Youtube, and a cheap preview strategy guide. Completely 100% worthless.

Gamers, welcome to the world of collectables.

Once items start getting numbered, the prices sky rocket. Doesn't matter if it came with merely an additional stick of gum, it's got a number, and people are willing to pay for the proof of the first edition ever.

I can't justify buying stupid crap for that amount of money, but evidently some can. As the content of CE's typically end up being little more than momentarily cool distractions I can't see myself paying more than ~$5 for it. Can get Fable II for $7, so I might. This $20+ business can go up its own ass and disappear. Unless the content is really sweet and awesome and neat. I'm trying to come up with something that'd be worth it but I got nothing. A real sackboy for LBP would be cool, but I wouldn't pay $20 for it.

Collectors editions are awful value for money, the only one in my house is Mass Effect because it was my wife's birthday present and that actually has some cool stuff with it. But I think they should at least come with a sound track bundled or something and be no more than 20% the normal price, they are making enough profit as it is on games.

I thought it was pretty good, especially the Beastiarium which is incredibly useful for me. A lot of people think the helmet is a rip off because it basically does nothing. Bungie did tell you guys months before hand that it would do nothing but be used as a special case for the discs, and so for those that bought it, I laugh at you for complaining.

The gameshops in Australia must be feeling very succesful then... what keeps them standing?

Games have always been expensive here (since the start of this generation however they've raised 30 dollars), what keeps them standing is the fact gaming here has a very strong community thats unfortunately willing to pay for our titles.

You average standard edition is (at a shop in this region)

PS3: 119-129

360: 109-119

WII: 99-109

The prices when you import are brillant compared to buying them out of a shop, on PS3 and 360 titles I can buy another game for what I would typically pay for one in this region out of a shop, its why I import so much now and love the region free move in gaming.

Probably not on feeling very successful, the money crunch everyone is under right now is making things pretty hard in our region with food and fuel prices still expensive as hell.

Last collector edition I bought was Halo 3's and that was a mistake, last good collector editor would been probably something in one of entries of Guild Wars. Now thats what you call a collector item; music soundtrack cd, artbook, extras, bonus game stuff, downable soundtracks, and so forth. 60 bucks. Now-a-days, they are sticking you with a high price for junk or not enough value. Recent ones (excluding a few) been quite lame.

The cost could be justified from the quality of the CE.

World in Conflict's CE gives you a piece of the Berlin Wall

Clear Sky carries a good one too.

MGS4 CE was a ripp-off, it cost me 100 euros (probably 150 bucks at the time) for what? A short extra dvd, a soundtrack, and tiny action figure.

If people want to pay extra for stuff that they probably won't use after a few weeks, then that's their choice. Personally, I don't see myself paying for all that useless extra stuff, unless it's something I can use on a daily basis, like a shirt, watch, you get the idea.

Most of them are junk but sometimes a nice one pops up. The only one I've bought in years was Bioshock for the Big Daddy. All of the "Behind the scenes" DVDs, artbooks, and most sound tracks are just trash they throw in to jack up the price. Occasionally some miniscule in-game content gets thrown in that they're too vague about to let you figure out it's trash until you've already bought it.

Of course it's all optional, so you're not forced to buy any of this. I think some of it could be nice for decorating a gaming room.

Also that Gears Lancer is a new landmark in cheap marketing crap. I can already tell it will be made out of about $10 of cheap plastic and $2 of spray paint.

The trick is to wait till you can pick it up used....Gamestop does not sell collector's editions for a different price used. Not counting the legendary or chainsaw bundle.
