Not really.

This is something I've seen quite a bit recently, and, though it's not necessarily expressed explicitly, the implication is there. Some people say that Banjo is clearly casual, though I am afraid that it seems to, with the vehicular customization (mostly non-aesthetic in nature, mind you), it leans far more to the hardcore side than the casual side (though it definitely has casual appeal). Viva Pinata and LBP are much the same-both offer a high degree of hardcore appeal while also attempting to bring in casuals, and for this they are called casual games, listed alongside the likes of Wii Music, LIPS, Singstar, etc. Such should not be the case-they are as far from those games as Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, and Halo 3. Simply because they use a colorful pallette does not mean they are comparable to the truly casual games.

Nice post.

Another example would be Bioshock. Very colourful, but I think it's System Shock 2 roots where too much for gamers of the Halo generation. Civilization 4 also looks like a colourful casual RTS, but it's one of the most hardcore TBS games of all time.

Are you sure your not trying to say that monotone games like Gears of War and Killzone 2 aren't necessarily hardcore though? I happen to think both games are relatively casual.

Does this sound odd? I didn't like C&C but I am slightly hyped for red alert 3 mainly because it looks awesome and colourful. I've never been a fan but the bright shiny water effects are... just ... so ... sweet!

Agreed, though I have to say, I've never actually hear someone use color palette as an argument for a game being casual. Sure, for some fanboys, beautiful color palettes=kiddy, but never casual. Still, can't imagine how someone would think that. Just look at games like Eternal Sonata, Castle Crashers, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, etc. All these games are packing very awesome color choices but none of them could be considered 100% casual.

Well, shortly before seeing this thread, I saw someone, when referring to "casual" games, explicitly say Banjo, Viva Pinata, and LBP, and what is the one thing all three have in common besides being arguably quite hardcore (or hardcore-looking)? Colors!

Casual games are best described as really shallow easy to play games. It has nothing to do with how colorful it is.
