A little about me before I begin, For as long as I can remember I have been an xbox fanboy. On the origional xbox I have over 150 games, and I have about 30 on the 360. Since the days of the 64, Ive never really liked the sony playstation. I origionally did not like them for what they and the market have done to Sega, and over the years I never was really interested in them, ive never owned a ps1, i got a ps2 slim just for god of war and some RPG's but im not one of those guys that go back into memory lane with sony. My memories are with xbox. So for about 5 months now ive done nothing but talk smack about a ps3, because i already own a 360 with a bunch of games and the true fact about ps3 and 360 is that they both are pretty much going to have the same games, its all multiplatform now. with that said i am starting to realize the 360 for the demon that it really is. i used to love the achievement point system, I would be happy every time i got one. I would love xbox live, and argue its the greatest way to play online...ever!! i would say, master chief will rock your world over any other game figure. but, I am not a teenager any more, my metabolizm is slowing down, and i am realizing the true flaws of the 360 and recognizing the ps3 as a system designed around more "hardcore" gamers. Let me tell you some of my thoughts on this and see what you think
1) the achievement point system- It is nothing more than a cheap ploy to force microsoft customers to buy new games, it is a hollow false way of microsoft telling you that you are good at videogames. I do not ever want to say "please microsoft, please recognize my gaming skills and give me an achievement point" I know i am nasty at games, I dont need a gamerscore to tell me that. Also, it forces me to buy more games, heres an example, i love fight night 3, absolutely love it, i have all 1000 points, but now, when i go to pop in fight night, a voice in my head tells me to play a different game and earn more achievement points, achievement points actually corrupt the gaming experience.
2) xbox live- its an awesome thing, i can play with millions of people and voicechat with them galore, its 50$ a year for the epoch in online gaming. microsoft is charging money for something that has existed for 20 years. the fact that it costs 50$ a year is so important because, its true its only 50$ but the true devil in this is that it instigates more 360 playing, it makes one want to play live as much as possible to really get there moneys worth. if i owned a ps3 and a 360 i would feel compelled to play live because my bank account is being charged once a year. i feel that the existence of this effect is not a problem for many people, but like i said i consider myself a hardcore gamer and i feel that this is something that can corrupt a gamer and change him or her into nothing more than a microsoft pawn.
3) all these upgrades- new maps every 2 weeks... lost planet, rainbow 6, graw, graw 2, oblivion, are just a few examples of games that i feel have been corrupted by microsoft. In that, they release these map upgrades and charge people for them, sometimes even though the game developer does not want to charge. and people buy them because of the "xbox live syndrome" the feeling that "hey im already paying for this so i might as well pick up these maps". xbx live, and the explosion of the market place have turned the 360 into an addictive drug, NOT a gaming system
4) the fact that ps3 is an all in one- im basically talking about 2 things here, the fact that it has the wireless adaptor built in, and a blue ray. its great that xbox 360 gives people a "choice" as to what accessories they want to buy, but in the end, once you buy them all it ends up being more expensive, i WANT a wireless coneection, its a choice ive made so i bought the adapter, whereas ps3 i feels is tailored to a more hardcore gamer and these features are included. Also the blue ray feature is a considerable aspect to recognize, i just purchased a 56" 1080p hdtv and i would like to watch some movies, i want it to be convenient, i want to watch the best media possible, the best media possible is blue ray. hd-dvd are just not as good, and the y are selling 2:9 against blueray. these are again, features, yes xbox gives me a choice about them, but i am getting older now, i dont want to play around with all these boxes and contraptions in my entertainment unit, i dont want a movie stored on my tiny xbox harddrive that i bought from xbx marketplace, i want a tangable blueray disk.
Lets assume that both systems are going to last for 5 years, i want the maximum features of both systems and over this time xbox 360 becomes more expensive
ps3 600 xbox 360 400
wireless 0 100
hd movies 0 200
online gaming 0 50 year, x 5 = 250
total 600 950
As you might have picked up on, i own alot of games, the money is not the main issure for me, the conclusion of this post is my confession that i honestly feel like i am being milked, and used, and taken advantage of by microsoft, i feel that it has corrupted me into just another revenue source for microsoft. I am a gamer, and i feel that ps3 is designed with the gamer in mind. PS3 is a superior system, not because the hardware is better, not because it has more fetures and more convenience, not because heavenly sword looks really fun, but because it does not corrupt your soul, like 360 has done to mine.
should i trade my 360 in, and get a ps3 instead. I do not want both systems, because i do not like what microsoft is doing to the gaming community, if i owned both i would be compelled to play 360 just because i am paying extra money for what ps3 does for free. what do you guys think?
