Considering buying a console, how will it compare to my current PC?

Hi. I'm looking at either a 360 or PS3 (Wii is a great little thing but not powerful enough for my liking). I currently have a fairly decent PC, (3800 X2, 7600GT) and as a benchmark for reference, Oblivion looks better on it than on the 360. I'm wondering if this will continue to be the case even as techniques develop for getting more out of the consoleslikewhathappenedwiththelastgeneration (compare a recent PS2 game with aPS2 launch title) and whether I should perhaps wait for a price drop as both consoles are still quite expensive here in NZ.

So what I'm wondering is whether it would be worth purchasing a console to tide me over while my PC is obsolete (not yet, but it will be in 18 months)? I'm interested particularly in the PS3 franchises Gran Turismo, MGS, and Resident Evil, franchises I've loved since my old PS1 and PS2. I'm not so familiar with the Xbox though other than Halo games. Also of interest are the cross console games such as GTA and the new LucasArts SW game. Will games that my PC cannot run anymore in 18 months that are available on PC and consoles look just as good on the consoles in 18 months as they would on a good PC? Thanks in advance

Well first of all, thank you for having enough brain cells to know the Wii isnt even a choice of the matter, secondly, i think you should go with the PS3, as technical feats only seem to be expanding for it and it will tie over ur PC for a long while considering it will have an expected 10 year life cycle.

Take a look at the games out now, and the games coming soon, in 2007 and 2008 for both consoles, and make a choice, you really wont go too wrong with the 360, but who knows what they have instored after 2007...

I honestly think you should go with the PS3 because it will eventually have more exclusives... Alot of 360s games get ported over to windows live now and you have a good enough PC to support them.

Obviously you're the one that lacks brain cells.

I mean that's not even what he said.

Yeah NOW I can but what about in 18 months?? In time I may want my console to fill in for my PCasmyPCwillnolongerbeuptoscratch so I'd also like to haveit play the games that come out on all platforms. I was practically PC-gameless for 2 years in '04 and '05 until I got my new PC, and in 18 months I'll be at that stage again =(

I'm new to this forum (usually use TWcenter.net and the Oblivion official forums though) and compared to them you guys seem to be very childish and biased. The Wii has nothing to do with this conversation! It's like having a discussion about say, the best tanks of WW2, and someone comes in and says the Leopard tank. Sure, it's a tank, but not appropriate to the discussion.

That looks like a comment to me.

@ Richard this is one of the most childish and biasedplaces on the internet and is certianly not the place to post asking for console advice, especially not in SW where 99% of people will just tell you to get whatever console they have.

Oh and as for the topic if you can afford a ps3 (which I assume you can) that's what I'd go for, but that's only for MGS 4. Then again ifI was you and had your PC I wouldn't get a console. :D

I'd go with the PS3.

If your PC is close to the Xbox, then you'd be able to play many pc/xbox games anyway. Sure you might not be able to play a couple of true exclusives for the Xbox, but you'd make that up with the PS3 exclusives.

A decent spec PC, properly optimised with the 7600 GT will give the 360 a good run for its money if not exceed it. Oblivion for example on this setup not only looks better than any of the console couterparts but also has better performance. Now factor in the mods available than further improve the visuals and performance on the PC.;)

No. In truth it wouldn't, even if they optimized the game to it's extreme. Console graphics will no doubt look better than they are today, but I don't see them doing crysis graphics.

Please, I'm a hemrit and a 7600 GT does NOT beat a 360, not even close actually. You would need at least a 7900 GT to equal Xbox 360 performances.

Right now your PC is at about Xbox 360 standard but in the future Xbox 360 will be better.

Get a PS3 or Wii to go with your PC - depending on your taste in games.

And simply buy a 8800 GTS when its dirt cheap.

If you are planning to buy a console just becuase you fear future PC games will not work on your Pc, I suggest wait till this happens. Both consoles will have a btter library and along with the games announced for them will help you make a better decision. Also by that time there may be a price drop or hardware problems (wrt to 360) may get solved

You live in NZ.

It's like a freakin' 360 love fest here. With a solid community, you won't go wrong with it.

Thanks for the input guys! At this point I'm leaning towards PS3 for the exclusives, as you have said I could bung an 8800GT in when games start getting too much for this machine I'm on now to handle. By that time the 360 and PS3 may not look partiularly impressive anyway. I remember I got about 2 years out of my PS2, which I bought 2 years after launch, soit was about '04when I started to look longingly at the likes of FarCry and thought "Man, this PS2 is just a high end PC circa year 2000". Which by that time was a piece of crap, but it had MGS and Gran Turismo and GTA! I might wait it out another year or so and see which console still has the goods.

The 360 is based closely around 7800 architecture. The 7600 is only slightly less powerful than the 360's GPU. When the 360's GPU gets a little more optimized it will be outperforming your card, but not by a landslide. A cheap 7900GS could probably outperform it easily though.
