Console FPS games were the best in the N64, PSOne and Dreamcast days. Before the times of dual analog control, and the trend of hectic squad combat. I don't much care for the trends in the genre over the last 6-7 years.
Though I'm much more of a casual FPS player when compared to many, my opinion is that FPS games were simply more fun and magical back then. Yes, the wonderment of being a young gamer had some to do with it, yet I still have more fun with old school corridor shooters than I do with a lot of the non sense today, LOL!
GoldenEye 007, Medal of Honor games, Turok series, Quake II, Perfect Dark, etc... Ah, great memories.
I feel that PC shooters were more unique when its counter-part - the console - wasn't trying to keep up with it so much. I wasn't ever a PC gamer, though I do respect its quality in the past. It too seemed to be more unique until the last generation got under way, which lead into the FPS obsession of today.
I think that corridor shooters that aren't so focused on wide open combat, online multi-player, and "teh textures and polygons" need to make a comeback. If you ask me, shooters are far more "generic" in general than they were years ago.
One more thing that I miss in shooters today: That feeling of isolation (like in Metroid Prime). Since technology has progressed so much, I guess that developers feel the need to make everything "epic."
Is there anyone else that feels as I do? :D
