Console KING of JRPGs?

Was it the PSX?

Squaresoft was popping out games like they were going out of style: Final Fantasy's I and II (Via FF Origins) IV (Via FF Chronicles) V and VI (Via Anthology), VII, VIII, IX. Final Fantasy Tactics. Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger (Via FF Chronicles). Vagrant Story, Valkyrie Profile

SCEA even came out with Legend of Dragoon, Grandia, Legend of Legaia, Wild Arms

And i'm forgetting a bunch. What happened to developers like these? RPGs, unlike any other genre can stand the test of time. 10 years down, we will look back and Gears of War will look and play like crap. Not RPGs though, you can still go back and play Chrono Trigger, or FFVII, and they are still amazing.

Developers need to work on more games like these. I understand it's harder and takes longer now. Square Enix only works on one title at a time before they even announce another game. But something needs to be done. Anyone agree?

Well so can the ps3, to add to it's, upcoming JRPGs. Anyway in terms of the quality AND quantity, the psx was coming out with JRPGs all the time. It started to go downhill with the ps2, the ps3 has almost hit a block. FFXIII and White Knight then what?

360 has Lost Odyssey, then what else?

PS3 60 gig for sure since it will play all Ps2 and PS1 games not to mention upcoming FF13 and versus. I think square only does that with the FF series(and even then X-2 and XI came out in the same year)... they do have other games other than FFs.

Disgaea 3 (out in japan)
Star Ocean 4
Eternal Sonata (yes, I know, out for 360)
Last Remnant (multiplats count kids.)
piles and piles of rumours...

Ps2 probably had more high level jrpgs than even ps1,
they pretty much started to come a couple years after release as well, so, who knows.

I'm worried about the Quality of these games. Will they be as epic as Chrono Trigger or FFVII? And the quantity, PSX was coming out with GREAT RPGs two or three times a year. Now we have to wait 2-3 years for one RPG that might be good

Atlus makes better JRPGS.. No offense, but the square games are all casual, have horrible resell value, and are way to kiddy anymore.. Atlus games are mature, hardcore difficulty, and appreciate in value.. they are a far better purchase.Bdking57

Well, Disgaea 3 is apparently freakin incredible, the first 2 were as well,
chrono trigger was for SNES,
takes time on any new platform to get high level rpgs, rpgs simply take more time to make than say...a shooter.

Yup, I agree it was the PSX. Add Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Parasite Eve II, Vagrant Story, Front Mission 3, SaGA Frontier, SaGa Frontier 2, Brave Fencer Musashi, Star Ocean: The Second Story and Dragon Quest VII to the list. I'm playing through at least half of them on PSP at the moment.

I think they are making Blue Dragon 2.

The 360 is also getting Tales of Vesperia, Operation Darkness is coming out in the States sometime this year, and I remember reading that NIS is thinking about making games for the 360, would love to think of some of the insane achievments they would have.

Star Ocean 4 is confrimed to confirmed on being a PS3 title, last I heard it was still up in the air?

EDIT: I would have to say the console King of JRPG would be the PSX/2 but this generation it appears there would not be a king persay, just great JRPGs for each system.

I would say PS2...although it's close between that and PS1. PS2 is a much better console overall though.

I thought this thread might be talking about this generation, and if so, I'd say it's too early to decide. Right now it looks like 360, but I think FFXIII could attract a lot of attention to the PS3. The Wii also has some impressive games lined up.

hell not only are they the  same thing but the old ones are way better.

i would play vagrant story, wild arms and legend of legaia before i would even think about touching anything made in the last decade.

SNES and PS1 tied imo with PS2 very close.

PSX > SNES > PS2 if I am remembering the game catalogs correctly. I am having to think beck many years to figure this one out though. I wish we could get back to PSX quality of JRPGs.

DS, PSP, and 3DS are the places to go for quality jrpg's nowadays though. All 3 have an amazing selection of them.
