I was just remembering how sony annouced at E3 how there console was meant to have a 10year lifespan... do you really think it will? i can see it being on the shelves for 10years but sony will have to realease a new machine at some point during that :S

I cant imagine they will let microsoft get away with realeasing something new in 2years or so ( 5year turn around is pretty standard ) and get away with it.

I have no idea how nintendo will outdo the wii...... will all the casual people buy another games console or just think "mah" we have one already which plays games.

You said it right. Just like the Ps2, it will have a ten year span, but they will release a new console way before then.

Don't some people feel mildly abused by that fact? Sony clearly lies or bends the truth to get people to buy there systems. They clearly implyed that sony would be supporting the PS3 100% for 10years when in reality after like 5 or 6 they will die it out and make way for the PS4.

I believe Sony supported the PS1 for like 8 years and the PS2 for 7+ going. It might not be 10 years, but it sure longer than their competitors. That's one of the things I like about Sony. They have that "holier than thou" stance but they do back up support for their consoles. The PS4 will come out 3-4 years from now, but I'm willing to bet that Sony will still be supporting the PS3 even near the end of the PS4's console life.

They still release their games on it though, I don't see how that's a lie. They never say it'll be the only sony console on the market for 10 years.

i think the majoirty of other readers agree i did not just pull this one out the woodwork, it was sonys justification for its huge pricetag at launch "buy it now and keep it for 10years", i just felt like hte millions of others who watched it that that would mean they wouldnt replace it for 10years. But yes sony have been very good at supporting old consoles, i mean if you look at the ps2 in comparison to the gamcube or xbox its done amazingly well in keeping its retail value and shop shelf space.

So why would you consider it a lie or bending the truth? They never said it'll be the only console. Like you said, they do very good in supporting all their console for a very long time.

The ps4 wilol be out before then.

I hope that the consoles have a good life span this gen as games take longer to make and cost devs more so they will need more time to make money. Otherwise next gen all the devs wont have made much money and there will be no good games!

No console will ever have a 10 year lifespan and frankly I don't see the PS3 doing what the PS2 has done, now the Wii that's a different matter, I could see that being around for 10 years, DS has been around for 4+ and that shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

10 year lifespan is really a bit of a line.

If it were true, we could chart the PS1's influence ending at the launch of the 360 in 2005.

If it were true, we could chart the PS2's influence ending in 2010. Not really going to happen.

Expect the 360 and PS3 to last from 5-7 years, based on how well they do. The Wii I'm still unsure about, Nintendo might try to jump to the next generation early if they feel confident in their market share.

The only console that will have a ten year lifespan is Wii because Nintendo has had a huge success with casuals and first time buyers.

Nintendo has yet to make the Wii plentiful on store shelves even at this late date.

The Wii will be Nintendo's console for at least ten years and will only do things to try and add to it which usually doesn't work ( 32 X :o ) but with the base they have, most will probably buy into the add-ons and Nintendo will continue to coast with their Wii.

They would be dumb not too !

MS will launch a new console in 2011/2012 and Sony with the PS3 this gen is just up in the air and a I dunno but to me the situation for them isn't pretty.

Of course IMHO.

Yeah, I think I agree.

Sony has to be careful. It seems to me that the hardware manufacturer with the most market share from last gen is the only one that gets to keep their hardware out past 5 or so years (not that it's a rule, just the way it has heppened). This would be their first time not having the most market share.

According to Wikipedia, Super Nintendo was retired in 1999, and in Japan it continued til 2000 which is about 10 years. Sega had to push Nintendo to move from the original Nintendo to the Super Nintendo.

Sony might be in for a suprise if they think that they can keep whichever console out they want for as long as they want if in fact it's really the privilege of the hardware manufacturer with the most marketshare (simply because said manufacturer's console would remain profitable.)

Actually that COULD apply to wii or DS. Well DS definetely atleast. Its already been out 4 years and its till going strong as ever, i could see it staying on for another 5 or 6 years.

they'll release a new console before then (probably within 5 years) but they'll keep the ps3 on the market for as long as possible.

5-7 years is ideal for me.
