In this currente gen, there have been many complaints about consoles acting like wannabe Pc's, except for the Wii.

It is safe to assume that pretty much all the gamers agree that the HD consoles have been trying so hard to be like Pc's.

While I agree with that, I'd also like to know from you guys, why "we" consider the nowadays consoles lacking in those aspects that should make those platforms feel like consoles and not Pc's.

My opinion is that graphics have become such a talked-about argument, devs have been trying to squeeze each system to its last drop and to find compromise to make the games feel fresh and awesome looking, despite using the same hardware. Plus, FPS's - once a Pc-centered genre - have become arguably the most popular genre on consoles. And last but not least, the console features ( multimedia, social networks, online etc )

so what would I expect from the home consoles.. less obsession about graphics and a lineup of exclusives that can truly tell them apart from Pc.

No, they've been trying to add as much features as possible so they offer better value. God, people complaining about systems adding more features.

- The focus on FPS

- The focus on online gaming

- Death to split screen(I don't mind this)

- Installs and patching being a regular occurance

Is why I think.

Console gaming has been around since the 70's. About time to realize that it isn't going to be disappearing anytime soon.

some dev's should stick to making pc exclusives and stick to consoles.

it's unfair all dev's all focusing on console or only on pc.

The gaming coummunity doesn't want consoles to disappear. They just want consoles to stop adding so many unnecessary features that can be done on PC much better.

people saying consoles are trying to be pc's is about the most ridiculous thing i've heard in these forums :|

why? because they had the usual graphics leap over the previous genration? was the super nes trying to be a pc?

does adding more features to consoles, make it looked like a "crippled" pc? :|

unless consoles become open platforms, (they aren't, that's why they're called consoles) then this makes 0 sense.

I don't tend to differentiate much in terms of systems. I don't consider PC to be more different to PS3/360 than the Dreamcast is to the Wii. Each offer things for different people with different mindsets. Different consoles influence other consoles, for instance the surge of motion control devices, which was initiated with the Wii.

I will say, though, that some things just remain best suited to a certain platform. RTS games, for example, are just made for a mouse/keyboard configuration. So devs shouldn't try to emulate that experience on consoles, and just focus on something that works.

this gen it sure looks so. they have to do something about those ancient controllers in order to move away from where they are. just like what Nintendo did and ended up being a winner.

they're gonna have to pursue a different kind of gaming experiences, if they wan't to move away from just being crippled PCs. even if i like being a PC gamer, SMG2 is an outstanding example of winner console game this gen. it does something completely different than PC games.

Hey dude. I don't think consoles are "gimped PCs". Everyone else on here, except maybe you and that other guy seems to think so.

I personally don't have a problem with them. I'm just going by observations I see on the Internet.

Actually I wish they would. Particularly if it would lower the price for Xbox Live. The only thing I do with it is play online. I don't watch nextflix, facebook, or any other things they added.

I wouldn't know, I'll never pay for an online service. And they'll never lower the price as long as people keep paying for it. Nowhere to go but up baby! :P

They still hate the PS3's hardware, but in today's market; you don't really have a choice. Everyone is going cross platform, the more difficult to develop for platforms just stand out the most when you are trying to make one game for three platforms.

That said Valve don't particularly like Microsoft either, because they keep trying to boss them around, telling them what they can and cannot do with their own games.

Anyway here's that PDF if anyone wants to read it.

Multi-platform approach is killing PC imo. Games in the past, when it's FPS then it's most likely on PC then ported to consoles. But now is different. No one cares about exclusive because the high production cost so they have to make it multi-plat so the games would be sold on more platforms to reduce the risk. Making games these days eat more budget than making games last for gen. We can't make games with only tech, we need designers, voice actors, writers, more programmers to check the fault in programming etc. This is what killing PC.

Absolute nonsense.

Even if you were to accept your argument; how would it be killing PC and not consoles? Cross platform games are behind the capabilities of console exclusives, so they are getting held back by it as well. If anything it is hurting consoles. Why do you think 1st party investment has increased so dramatically this generation? Microsoft and Sony are spending 100s of millions to fill out their exclusive line-up, because they need adoption justifications and the market isn't providing them.

Because of cross platform development; PC hardware costs are lower than ever, making it more affordable than ever. PC always has the technical edge, even with console limitation of games; because it can always crank the resolution and quality filters up. PC has access to the most exclusive games, a line up even more diversified with the addition of many console games going cross platform.

While it is indeed sad that the days of the 3rd party big budget exclusive are gone, and I do yearn for them at times, PC is flourishing in this environment. I cannot say the same for consoles, which are having to dump more and more money into differentiating themselves, because without all this 1st party funded support; the 360 and PS3 line-up would be largely identical.

I do tend to agree that consoles this gen are basicly gimped PCs, with the exception of the Wii. (I really do want one I think O.o)

My main complaints about the consoles however is not really the hardware, nor crossplatform (altho all games being cross platform often results in lackluster games on PCs).

My problem is mainly with the closed platform of the consoles, aswell as MS and Sonys way of handeling Pubs and Devs.

If the devs could update thier games freely, and MS + Sony was not utterly obsessed with controlling the online capabilities of those platforms, it would help a great deal. So my main complaint is strangely the closed limited nature of a set of consoles geared towards mp. it feels like MS and Sony took half a step towards PCs, but uncomfortable of leaving the usual console mentality behind, and is thus stuck between being a smaller, gamefocused only pc like entity, and a console of old... The result is lackluster.

Nothing is killing PC gaming. Yes, most big budget games have gone multi platform because the costs are too high for exclusivity these days, but the rise of DD has created a market for mid budget games that would have never seen the light of day a few years back. Eg: Battlefield 3 goes multi platform, and Red Orchestra 2 steps up, and if you think that looks like a budget game then you are smoking crack. Things change, and they have, but as far as i'm concerned, I would rather 90% of the old PC games went multi platform and have this new wave of indie gaming upon us than like it was before.
