I bought an xbox in mid 2004.In 2005 the xbox 360 came and i HAD TO "upgrade" to the xbox 360 in order to keep playing games. With my PC i could lower the settings but still play games for a long time.

Tell me again that teh PC requires the upgrades??Seriously the fact that console fanboys just ignore this is just sad.

If somebody was to buy an xbox 360 now he will likely get no more than 2 years of gaming out of it.My 8800 has been playing games om high settings for 15 months now??So what is all your fuss with the whole PC needs the upgrading thing??:|

That would be the point of consoles, its for people who dont have the money/knowledge to upgrade computers. It lets them play on high setting for 5-6 years and then upgrade everything at once.

So true, when the 360 came out, Microsoft employee's came out to my house and held a gun to my head and said, upgrade or we take ALL your games from you so you can never play them again. New consoles come out does not mean you have to go out and buy them to continue to enjoy your games.

Those who said you need a new video card to play new games which is incorrect if you can lower the settings but with consoles you have NO choice.

You bought a console that was already 3 years old. Now while support for that should have lasted longer, in general, that late into its life, you can't expect a console to last that much longer.

If the PC you speak of was also 3 years old, you'd only be able to play newly released games on the lowest settings, if at all. For that given game to exceed the console counterpart, you'd need to upgrade. Or given that the average lifespan of a gaming PC that isn't upgraded is 4-5 years, be buying a new rig.

This thread is such a massive failure, it defies description.

because when you buy a console game you know its going to work. Console is a fixed platform.

if you buy a PC you have to make sure your components are up to scratch to play the latest games.

It all depends on timing. Consoles have an average life of 5 years. PC's also have an average of 5 years. It's just that new parts are released every once in a while rather than every 5 years. If you were to seperate each generation of hardware (GeForce 5###, GeForce 6###, etc.) you'd get roughly 5 years.

No, but they don't handle newer games as well as the newest cards. And while you can lower game settings, at some point, that old card will be UNABLE to play a new release game, say like a game that comes out 4 years later.

The Xbox had a short life, so you're really using one of the worst examples. Also, it came out in 2001, so when you bought your computer did you limit it to 3 year old technology as well?

And the same is with consoles but the situation is worse. If i buy a console in it's mid or late lifetime then i wont get long enough lifespan with it.But if i get a top end video card of today it surely is going to last me a good time.

I did plenty of research. I know it's possible to build a budget rig, but be honest you wouldnt want to own one, because the potential for the parts to be crap is high.

I'll re-iterate what I said earlier.

You have to think about PC parts in generations (e.g. GeForce 5 series, GeForce 6 series). If I were to buy a GeForce 6800 2 years ago, I'd only get about 2 years of life from it. If I were to buy an Xbox in 2003, I'd only get two years out of it.

Um. What?

In Europe console games cost 30$ more than PC ones on average. Throw in additional costs (controlers, online fees, dlc...etc...everything more expensive than on PC) and you've got your answer

So you're comparing a video card of today, to a console that's already 3 years old. Do you even SEE the severe flaw in that argument?? Now please, go ahead and tell me a 3 year old card will still be able to play PC games coming out 3 years later. Go ahead and tell me that with a straight face :)

Or better yet, go back to school and learn how to compose an argument :)

What he said is that you have to upgrade to play current games.

But what about when games are full direct x10 and all you have is 8 or nine you have to upgrade.

Pc gaming CAN be cheap. I am a cheapass and wouldn't be gaming on PC if it cost a fortune compared to other choises, but it doesn't. I do need a PC for other activities as well, that simple fact pretty much leaves me the price of upgrading to worry about. And after I take into consideration the cheaper games, cheaper accessories, massive amount of free content and the fact that I don't HAVE to play games maxed out ..it actually works out pretty cheap.

But as far as games just realeased in 2012? I didn't doubt a card 3 years old can play games. I asked if it could play games released 3 years LATER (when it would be 6 years old), since you're all on how much longer a 3 year old console should last.

BOTH consoles and video cards have expiration dates.

I bought a PS2 on November 10th 2006, and then, the NEXT DAY the PS3 came out and I HAD to upgrade.

Can I play Motorstorm on my PS2? NO I CAN'T! I had to upgrade!!! Consoles only last a freakin' day. 1 FREAKIN' DAY!! Meanwhile, my 6600GT plays all of today's games just fine, at a perfectly acceptable 640x480 framerate with at LEAST 25 FPS.

I have a great PC, and have only played Witcher on it, because PC simply has NOTHING for me, it is a dead system to me, and only 1-2 games could somewhat revive it, if not ported to 360 soon after PC releases (Dragon Age for example)

I play on my 360 for 2 years now, and have not TOUCHED my quad core pc, PC gaming is the ultimate joke of our times IMO, pay for graphics cards etc to play a shallow shooter in Crysis, the only game to make PC worth it, if you like the shallow mindless gameplay of the shooter genre that is

In whole of 2008, i will not touch my PC as well, there is nothing on the damn thing for me, i can't get on my 360, and when Dragon Age comes, a game that will be no match for games like Mass Effect 2 and Fable 2 anyway, will play it on my PC, and then let it die out again, hopefully forever, and all games come to my 360 and have no need to EVER touch that system again

From the moment 3D graphics cards entered pc gaming market, PC gaming died, that simple, and i hope it stays dead forever, so we can ALL enjoy the best of games without spending an arm and a leg, to buy hardware that will be for the garbage bin a few months (or weeks more than often) later

i bought my PC in 2003 and the graphics card is already out dated. i can't play any game with SM 3.0 and alot of games run extremely crappy. you don't have to upgrade pc's but it you want to make them better than console you have to

Wow. That's a horrible argument. I could make the same about the PC...if I bought an old (and weak) graphics card I'd need to upgrade shortly too... why would you even buy an xbox in 2004?

who said you have to buy the next console?6matt6

because games stop being made on the old one. even a highend pc of 2004 can run crysis

its still more expensive any way you slice it, i did my researchf50p90

not to play game like consoles play them
