As I was sampling games at gamestop, I started to take into account the pros and cons of each of the current next-gen console's controllers. Then I thought, "I wonder what the GS community thinks?" So my question to you is: Which of the three current console controllers do you think is best? If you post, don't say something like "360 controller pwns". Defend/discuss the controllers and their pros/cons. 8)

Keyboard & mouse,my friend. ;) Seriously though,I like the 360 controller the most,it just feels better in my hands, the triggers are great and I always loved the fact that the left analog stick is in a upper position.

I prefer the 360 controller. Despite a better D-pad, I just hate the placement of the analog sticks on the Dualshock.

Xbox 360controller. I like the placement of the sticks, the size and feel of the control, and the triggers.

The PS3 controler feels to weak, and the analoges are too close imo. The dualshock 3is an improvement over the far too light sixaxis though

Xbox360 wasmade for 3d gaming I wish PS4 will get a new control because PS3 controller seems like a add on to PS2 and PS1 it wold be sad if PS4 just have the same controller whit added bottons or sticks

as far as the wiiController its a remake of the original perfect for 2D games

Wiimote will eventualy become the future of gaming ( Motion sensor ) even if we dont like it kids love it they will get usto it and prefer it in a far future

360. No contest there. I don't know why Sony insists on sticking with the same gimped controller design generation after generation.

Me being a PS1,PS2 and PS3 owner only ever since..i personally think the 360 controller have better shoulder pads..i like the PS2's shoulder pads (flat and simple)..but the PS3 feels like the R2 and L2 can make ur fingers slip off sometimes..the 360 (when i play at my friend's house)'s shoulder pads are like triggers..made to comfort ur fingers and keep them there...

This isn't fair because you didn't include the GCN controller which has just as much functionality as the Classic Controller this gen. The GCN is by far the best standard controller ever conceived. The only mistake was the placement of the Z button. But where else were they gonna put it?

personal experiences:

  • durability test: dog gets a chance to chewup my 360 controller and my only dualshock 3 while i'm out of town, which one comes out better? 360 controller barely has a scratch, PS3 dualshock 3 controller no longer has analog sticks and has something rattling on the inside, 360 controller wins
  • comfort test: after working all day, which one would i rather hold? the one that "sits" in my hands and i get cramps? Or the one that fits in my hands? 360 controller wins
  • shoulder buttons test: stock ps3 triggers are junk, have to spend money on plastic trigger guards, 360 triggers great out of the box, 360 controller wins
  • face buttons test: 360 buttons too rounded, hurt when mashing after awhile, PS3 controller wins
  • analog sticks: don't really need to go into this one: 360 controller wins
  • other: ps3 controller comes with battery, 360 controller doesn't, PS3 controller wins

overall: 4-2 in favor of the 360 controller

360 > / = PS3 > c1assic Controller according to the poll.

Overall, Wii Remote > Keyboard and Mouse > 360 > / = PS3 > C1assic Controller.

P.S. Gamespot really pisses me off when it comes to saying "C-lassic". I see people say it all the time, but it never lets me say it.

Dualshock 3 for me.

Superior D-Pad

Pressure Sensitive Face Buttons

Recharable

SixaxiS

Smaller Dead Zone

I also really like using the L1/R1 "bumpers" for shooters.

Imo the only thing that needs tweaking is the way the "triggers" curve.

Actually for the same price as a PS3 controller you can get a wireless 360 pad that comes with both a rechargable battery pack and a pack that takes two double AAs so you get the best of both worlds especially if you have rechargable double AAs :)

even PS3 owners will vote for the 360s controller. i did. the DS3 is inferior.

edit: actually, if the 360 controller had built in rechargeable batteries, then it would be superior. so for that, its still inferior.

I'm going with the Dualshock 3, if for no other reason than because it's totally rechargeable out of the box.

360

only downfall is D-pad (for some)

even the battery pack is better than built-in:

better battery life

not forced to use a play/charge cable (AA rechargables pls)

considering wireless of course

and the Nintendo one is worse than the Gamecube controller, which is probably the 3rd best controller of all time.

xbox 360 controller

pros: durable, cheaper, comfort*, GFW supported, analog stick design

cons: d-pad

DualShock3 controller

pros: dpad, pressure sensitive face buttons,

cons: hard to replace battery, expensive, small, fragile, analog sticks have too large of "throw" area.

For the most part the 360 controller just seems to be not only a short term better value, but a long term better value. The DS3 is not only fragile, but over the long run the Li-ion battery is going to suck, and need replaced. Also the design of the 360 analog stick is really awesome, while the ps3 is not only an awkward placement, but also has a larger throw area which makes it harder to use. The d-pad on the 360 undoubtedly sucks, but w/ today's games the d-pad is used a lot less. I'm really hoping sony redesigns their next controller for the ps4, and fanboys don't ruin it like they did the boomerang.

*for most users based on ergonomic design.

That's a nice chart. I think I'll borrow that format.

(horrid, poor, average, good, excellent)

PS3:

analog sticks - Good(stick sometimes and feel a bit loose, but they're in the best position)

face buttons - Excellent

Xbox 360:

analog sticks - Ok

face buttons - Good

Wii:

To me, the xbox 360 controller feels the best, and I have played Playstation most of my gaming career.

My only complaint with this controller is the D-Pad and the Sticks aren't as nice as the older Xbox Controllers.

Hmm, I guess I'll say 360. I'm not sure if it's just that I play with it way more than the DS3, but it just seems way more comfortable to me; reasons being mainly the weight of the controller, the analogue sticks and the triggers. As for the classic controller, I've never used it.

I personally would love a 360/PS3 controller hybrid. =)
Mainly a 360 controller, but with the directional pad and internal battery of a PS3 controller.

I was surprised initially, but I'll admit that the 360 controller is the most comfortable to use for me.

Here's my breakdown:

PS3:

analog sticks- very poor (placed awkwardly and not ergonomic at all, fingers slide off very easily)

face buttons- great (nice and clicky - best d-pad)

shoulder buttons- poor (too squishy shoulder buttons, R2 and L2 triggers: fingers slide off very easily)

grip/comfort- poor (not comfortable thanks to the placement of the analogue sticks, and the size of the controller itself)

Xbox 360:

analog sticks- great

face buttons- poor

shoulder buttons- great (nice and clicky shoulder buttons - triggers curvein the right direction)

grip/comfort- the best (ergonomic and size wise)

Wii:

analog sticks- poor (analogue and 8-way engraved controllers - both classic and nun-chuck, can get annoying at times)

face buttons- great

shoulder buttons- decent

grip/comfort- decent ('tis okay)

Varies from genre to genre, but generally speaking I prefer the design quality of the 360 controller.

After that, the PS3 comes in way ahead of the Wiimote for me. The CC is fine, but only for retro games, in which case it is better than X360 and PS3.

DS3, I love the symmetric placement of the analog sticks, the pressure sensitive buttons, the overall shape and feel of the controller. Though the triggers need to be made more like the 360 controller's triggers.

I like the Classic Controller the best. BubbyJello

THANK YOU!

A lot of gamers here on GS are this new generation of gamers who like to play shooters. The X360 controller works best for this. I'd like to see how the CC would work on a shooter but no shooters on the Wii have supported it. But as I'm a retro gamer the CC works fine. Definitely looking forward to Cave story.
