Convince me to buy a PS3-=-

situation- have $900 or so in checking account and will be depositing every time i get paid so ill be putting in $300-$400 or so a month minus having to take out cash for gas and such(i dont work much at all). I want to save my money for a PS3 but I do have a 360, but its been getting the RROD randomly lately but i think i might have cured it as of late. Either way, i dont think it can last much longer, and I'll get it repaired when it does, but I'd like to get a PS3 for a change of scenery. My only question is, why should i get it? I have to use my money to buy books for college soon which blows but i should have more than enough money by that time rolls around this year. Will it really be worth the money? Are the exclusives worth it? never played an MGS game in my life but i bet it is good from what i hear lol. It still doesn't justify buying a PS3 tho IMO. No game is worth $600 or w/e it would cost for a PS3 + the game.

Another thing, how much does the HDD factor? 40gb sounds like enough to me, i have 20gb on my 360 and still have room left and i been playing it for a while. I dont download videos tho and stuff.

OK first off, if i could have changed the title of this thread to "Should I get a PS3" and im sure i'd be getting better replies. so, should i get one? considering my situation....

I wouldn't reccomend getting one if you have a 360, save your money till the end of the year, you'll be less disappointed.

EDIT: I mean less disappointed because by the end of the year there will be more exclusives and features like in game XMB and home.

This person speaks the truth. If you're not really into MGS4 or you have patience, there's no need for a PS3 right now. You're a 360 owner which means you're set for awhile. E3 is just around the corner. Most likely they'll announce new PS3 skus and bundles with different lower prices. Also make sure the DS3 is included because the sixaxis alone is pretty shameful. Just wait.

Like many others have said, I can only advise you. The decision to spend will be solely your own.

My advice: Get a PS3. A 40 GB should be enough.

Reasons:

Huge number of promising titles on the way (some are already here).

Blue-ray player.

Price decreasing and on-line support constantly improving.

True next-gen system since it still has a lot of untapped potential so games will continue to improve for some years to come.

I'll make this easier on you by helping you break things down.

1. Do you own a PS2? If not do you plan on playing PS2 games? If you do not have a PS2 and want to play PS2 games then you need the 60 gig version most likely. The 80 gig version has less compatibility for various reasons.

2. Do you enjoy FPS games more than any other genre? If so you should probably stick with the 360 until PS3 starts getting their exclusives.

3. Would you like online capabilities without having to pay monthly for online access on it? PS3 is free to play online on generally. There is no Xbox Live membership needed. Or any other membership really.

4. Would you like to surf the web in your living room? Watch Youtube videos on the couch? Then this is a selling point for the PS3.

5. Do you have a PSP? If you do then there are many things you can do between the 2. If you do have one, the more you like it, the more points for the PS3 you can input here. I love going to a coffee shop and listening to music or even playing games on my PS3 from my PSP and then turning off the system.

6. Do you love graphics more than almost anything else? Well technically speaking (GTA IV as well as Mirror's Edge developers have confirmed this) the PS3 has the most graphical capabilities. SOME games don't come as close... but others do.

7. Do RPGS and JRPGs interest you? Well then Disgaea 3 would probably interest you and it's loaded with ATLEAST 120 hours of gameplay. Probably up to a few hundred hours. That game to me is worth the cost of the PS3. I've put over 200 hours onto the first game, over 180 to the second game (but I haven't even gotten close to finishing the extra stuff on the second game where as the first game i've nearly conquered it) and I will probably end up putting 200-300 hours onto the 3rd game. Sure some RPGs are exclusive, and some games are exclusive etc... etc... but more the Xbox 360 is the ONLY system that has no need for exclusives. PS3 has better graphics, motion controls, Wii has the most motion controls, and the most uses for their controller, and Xbox 360 is an Xbox with more Ram and Vram and sometimes no hard drive and other time a bigger hard drive. Also considering Blu Ray is far more storage capable that means some PS3 exclusives CAN NOT make the jump to 360 but ALL 360s games would be able to.

Finally my question is this, do you need to get the PS3 now? Do you just want it now? What exactly? What I would suggest is picking a number of games that would make the system feel worth it to you. For me a system has to have 5 exclusives for me to want it. 360 hasn't reached that number yet and some of the games are comming over to the PS3. Ninja Gaiden 2, Star Ocean 4, possibly Mass Effect (not sure about that one yet) are game that interest me. Bioshock is going to teh PS3, Gears of War 3 will be on the PS3, and some other games are losing exclusivity. 2 games just won't do it for me UNLESS they are games that have shaped my entire view of gaming. For me the countless hours I have enjoyed the Disgaea series has bought my loyalty and to me those games were more than enough.

Why did I get a PS3? Because my PS2 was dying, and if I traded it in I could get money. I bought a 60 gig, Trauma Center Second Opinion, Resistance Fall of Man, and GoW 2 and the PS3 for 600 dollars roughly (after tax) when I had plenty of money and needed to salvage my PS2 before the sale went out. If I didnt sell it, there was a possibility my PS2 would have gone out and then over 100 games of my collection would be unplayable until I payed more money. So I bought it to ensure I could continue to play games. Of course the best news is, it's very reliable and I have only had it freeze on me 1 or 2 times out of the year I've owned it and the countless hours we've used it for. No failures. No issues, no overheating.

I'm not trying to persuade you to buy it, I'm trying to help you have the critical thinking required to allow you to make your decision. If you want my honest opinion on wether or not it's worth it, I say that it's not yet there for everyone yet, but dont' worry, it will be. If not now, probably a little later this year. That's my honest opinion. Eventually yes it will be worth while for everyone. Just like the PS2. I still don't think I'd enjoy having a 360 nearly as much, or if there will be enough games to make me want one bad enough. Honestly though, if Disgaea 3 was comming out for 360 instead, I probably would have bought one by now.

So look at the games you want, and when they'll be released. Then give them 6 months from that date if they haven't been delayed yet (this is becomming true of all consoles) and then plan to buy the PS3 then. :P

*edit* 1 side note. If you go for the 40 gig version, remember you can always increase the HDD size. They are SATA hard drives and you can buy the hard drives it takes for about 170 dollars will get you 250 gigs. Compare that to 180 dollars for 120 gigs for the 360's hard drives. The PS3 installs 5 gigs for ALL big name titles. Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc... It does this to lower load times and allow better graphical capabilities. That means about 7 games will fill up a 40 gig roughly. Not smaller games like Heavenly Sword, Assassins Creed, etc.. but the more Epic type of games.

Don't buy a PS3.*

I only have a 360 as well, IMO there just is not enough to justify a PS3 yet. I will a more diverse library of games and better online. (I am not saying PS3 does not have any good games, just not ones that interest me.) Also try not to listen to all of the people saying "Metal Gear Solid 4" the game just came out and they have Metal Gear fever right now. The reason you feel this way is because none of the ps3 games are as acclaimed as 360s except final fantasy and mgs...see, last gen allot of third party devs supported sony exclusively, including ea, back when their frame rate sucked on xbox games and had no online....

Now this gen is allot more balanced, and the market is allot more divided, sony no longer has strong third party support, and this gen is nowhere near as exciting as the xbox, ps2 era....

Sony had to now come up with ip's from scratch now, games like resistence and motorstorm are just getting there start this gen, aren't as widespread and know and such, but I'd honestly say from a non bias perspective for a moment buy a ps3, I know if I had the money I'd get a 360, simply because they have games I want.You should atleast research, don't ask system wars, this place is biased, check out the www.psu.com website to see games, we have exclusives like Infamous, little big planet, and other games which I don't even know about that are new franchises and lp's coming out for ps3, there so unknown that a cow like myself doesn't even know they exist, as of now when it comes to exclusives ms has it downpacked, as there's like 20 for 360 i know off without owning a 360 and only 4 i know of for ps3....

The choice is yours though...

At Wal Mart right now you get a $100 gift card for buying any Blu-ray player including PS3. That pretty much makes the PS3 cost $300. You can get any game you want for it and some blu rays if you like movies. 40 gb IS enough contrary to what some people say. There ARE good games on the PS3 contrary to what people say. There are a lot of really good games coming out too. With free online, wireless, and other stuff included right out of the box... for $300 why not get a PS3 if you have $900...

I've been more tempted to get one since the price has come down, since getting a HD TV and since MGS4 came out.

However - my mate just offered to lend me his for a few weeks so I can play and compete MGS4.....so now I am thinking that I don't really need one.

i still have 15 gigs left. i have mgs, oblivion, untold legends ect. all on it still.

I'm going to try and answer your question as sensibly and non-fanboy as possible.

I would definitely recommend the PS3 as a gaming system, even in your situation. As you've said, you already have a 360 so a PS3 would allow you to ensure you have access to any exclusives which are not on the other system. A basic point maybe, but when BOTH systems have some really amazing exclusives either released or coming up (The gears games, bioshock etc. for 360, MGS4, Final Fantasy etc. for PS3) to be able to access all of them is a bit of a godsend for a gaming fan... plus it keeps you from turning into too big a fanboy.

You get all the lauded benefits of the system - Blu-Ray (even if you don't use it now in future when the cost comes down you'll know you've got one and with the PS3 system updates it'll be more reliable than stand-alone players), free PSN internet access which is growing strength by strength and with Home, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Online and so on and so forth it'll continue to grow and prove to be an equally capable online gaming service to match and maybe even surpass Xbox Live. There's loads more, it is an expensive but great system, so if you can afford it I'd definitely recommend it.

You'll also have a console to play on when you send your Xbox off for RROD repairs. :)

As you mentioned though, MGS4 isn't to you convincing enough to get one, so have a look around at what's on offer in the PS3's current catalogue. There are some great titles there - MGS4, Uncharted, Ratchett and Clank, and of course if you don't have them there's multi-plats such as Oblivion (which is slightly better on PS3), GTA4, Orange Box, Devil May Cry 4 and so on.

Don't forget as well with free internet access there's a load of games and demos you can download and spend hours watching/playing. You mentioned you don't download stuff, I was the same before I got my PS3 but with it being free and easy I find myself regularly checking for the latest trailers and demos!

40g should be fine so long as you don't make loads of games and don't go overboard on your downloads (and even if you do it's simple as anything to delete them to make more space). Of course if it does fill up there's plenty of online tutorials of how to install a new hard-drive, though that can be quite expensive and only really if you're doing a load of downloading.
