Well think about it, if you were someone who was interested in the PS3, and hears that its going to be 500 dollars starting monday. But then a few weeks later the new version comes out for 600 dollars. I would think it could confuse some prospective buyers if they are not aware about the cheaper version still being avaliable.

They better advertise it well. I would think it'd be better to plan the new version and the price drop to occur at the same time.

Nah.

They'll simply see the added game and then say "Oh look, it has an extra 20GB of storage than the non game included package!!!!"

Nope. Honestly, they will probably just see it as stores doing a bundle package, and forego it for the most part, to get the 60GB.

Are they confused by the multiple varieties of iPods available?

To be honest I think its less confusing than the Core/Premium packages, where one of them doesn't come ready to play games out of the box.

I think it is VERY possible that casuals will think the 600 dollar version is the one to own, and the 60gig is the crap version. Even worse, it might even be that ultra-casuals don't even know anything changed at all. They'll think the "big" ps3 is still 600 and the crap one is 500.

So I'm assuming you played through Gears all the way in one sitting, considering you couldn't save your game.

Memory card. Even though it's not hard for us to remember something like that I've seen people walk out of stores without them.

It's actually the other way around. People always try and compare the iPhone and the PS3 saying "Oh the iPhone is selling great at $600....so why doesn't the PS3" It's PS3 bashers that make those kinda comparison threads for the most part.

good point , makes sense.

I don't think that is such a good example. Mostly because the Gb rating is essentially the entire point of the "better" iPod. That isn't necessarily true with ps3 however, alot more goes into it that casuals won't know about...and they'll know they don't know. Also, the designations, iPod "video", and iPod "nano" etc..are both extremely clear and visible to the eye. There is little confusion possible. Again, not so with the ps3. They look the same, and if you don't know why you need extra gigs, or much else about it, you'll be clueless.

I'm far from clueless on tech issues so I'm not a good person to ask, but personally I don't see how more hard drive space and a pack-in game is confusing. I mean everybody know why you want more hard drive space (so you can fit more stuff!) and the game speaks for itself.

No, I clearly remember Cows making those sorts of comparisons post-E3 in attempts at damage control. Bottom line is, it's apples and oranges, and even attempting to compare the success of two different products from two different markets is stupid.

Facts:

1.) The PS3 has no system-selling exclusives coming out in the near future. Please take note of the bolded words.

2.) The price point is far too high given their competition.

3.) Their marketing is HORRIBLE

#3 is the most interesting of the facts I listed, because marketing can make or break the success of a product. When I see a PS3 commercial, it should have the best clips of the various games they provide -exclusively- followed by a flashing of the logo, or something of that sort. What'd they do? Creep people out with some freaky baby commercial.

The point is...people who don't know about gaming won't know what all there is to it. You know what all there is to an iPod. It is a device entirely dedicated to storing information. The higher the Gb number, the more you can store. With the ps3, people see all kinds of other variables that could change...regardless of whether or not they actually do.

And again with the designations. iPod "video" is just that. An iPod that plays video. Really hard to mess that up. However, when ps3's are 100 dollars apart, and the only difference they see is a slightly higher number next to the Gb rating, they'll think....well what else does it do? You have to play dumb here. We know far too much about these consoles to see this argument, but what if you're a mom? It might be hard to discern why one ps3 is better than the other....so you might just go ahead and buy the 600 dollar one thinking there are greater differences.

Well, my defintion of casual is pretty simple.

1.) If your first game console played its games on disks of any sort, chances are you're a casual. This of course will change with time.

2.) If your Top 5 games of all-time list includes Halo, yep, chances are you're pushng it.

3.) If you make any blanket statements about the consoles such as " Nintendo is kiddy ", " 360 only has shooters ", etc. You definitely are.

I could go on like that for days, but I think pretty much everyone here knows what I mean.

Yeah, they're marketing is questionable. Everyone is trying this "viral" marketing campaign where they just dispaly completely messed up stuff that have little to do with their product. THe price point is too high. I do think though that the games coming out will be great however (and especially considereding their biggest franchises, MGS4, FFXIII, and GT5) have yet to appear.

It isn't that they're dumb people. It's just that by definition of them being casual (to the degree that we're talking right now) they are pretty ignorant on this particular subject. It would be like me buying an air conditioner. I see BTU's, volts, whatever else...and I'll be clueless as to what I need or why I need it. Doesn't make me dumb, just uneducated. People seem to be particularly confused by new technology. It's like they don't even WANT to know about it.

Yeah, I agree. I don't know though, I consider myself an educated consumer and most of my decisions on purchases are done after I have done some research or know about the product ( but hey, I did get a PS3 at launch **rimshot**) But honestly it'll be fine lol.

I don't think it's really a price drop its more like a hard drive upgrade. People that will go into a store and if you ask the sells person which PS3 should you getthey might point out the 80 gig because it's the latest and greatestand it'sbundled with a game and because it's more expensive. So yeah some consumers might get confused.IMO the 80 gig announcementwith the $499 60 gig was a dumb move by Sony again.

I don't think they will. They'll see that the $600 model comes with MotorStorm and just look at is as a more expensive bundle, much like you find at Sam's Club and Costco.

I don't think it's really a price drop its more like a hard drive upgrade. People that will go into a store and if you ask the sells person which PS3 should you getthey might point out the 80 gig because it's the latest and greatestand it'sbundled with a game and because it's more expensive. So yeah some consumers might get confused.

well put. I don't really see how it could go any other way.

I'm not talking about it in that way though. I'm saying that I would think some casuals could become confused if they see that the PS3 is now 500 dollars. and then they will come back a couple weeks later to see a 600 dollar price tag again. Sure there are two versions but it may not be so obvious to the average buyer.
