I don't think we will see another game as influential as Mario 64 until we reach VR.

I doubt it. The reason that Mario 64 was so spectacular was because it was the first 3D Mario, and it was the first to present a game where Mario could roam freely. Since then, the Mario formula really hasn't changed much. Mario Galaxy will probably be AAA, because the controls are so intuitive.

Mario Galaxy is confirmed to have multiplayer as well, which kind of ruins the "unchanging formula" argument. Miyamoto did in fact hint that the multiplayer aspect could involve a second player hindering Mario's progress rather than standard co-op fare. Either way it sounds incredible.

For mario galaxy, i say add some kind of online coop. play as Luigi, or even peach or something. I think the only way it will have that Mario 64 factor is if the control scheme is simply amazing. one of the big reasons Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 were so great was because of what they changed about the series. Both games were the transistion from 2d to 3d. Twilight Princess is better than OOT in many ways, but it didnt have OOTs umph factor. I still believe this game will get AAA.

Meh im more of a sidescroller guy myself, I never liked the 3d transition of Mario. This whole planet stuff seems too weird for me, Not a place where mario belongs to be honest.

I dont think it will be as influential (it may be on the Wii though, just not genre redefining) but I think it will be just as good for its time...

You are not going to see another SM64 with Galaxy. Will people quit making the comparisons? SM64 made a flawless leap from 2d into 3d. Nothing in Galaxy will ever be that significant or any Mario game at this point.

I definitly would love it if Luigi were playable. He probably won't be, but maybe next time. I just love the idea of playing as a 3-D Luigi in a free-roam area, y'know?

Super Mario 64 on the DS even had Yoshi, Luigi and Wario as playable characters, so having them playable in SMG wouldn`t be much of a suprise

SMG won't have the same impact SM64 did, but it likely will be more accepted by fans than Sunshine.

Possibly. It looks tailored around the Wiimote the same way that Mario 64 was tailored around the N64 controller.

Which it was but instead of making a big Impact like Mario 64, Sunshine only refined it to make the Mario 64 formula better but the reason people thought it was bad was because it didn't really change anything like Galaxy is doing.

It will not be as revolutionary as 64 but it will surely redefine what a 3D platformer is.

STABW0UND

Yeah I have to agree. Tho its quite unique and different platforming elements could offer something to the genre. It could make a splash, regardless of how big that splash would be.
