Understand what a world had to do to survive. When the Locust Horde burst from the ground fifteen years ago to slaughter the human population of Sera, mankind began a desperate war against extinction. Now after a decade and a half of bloody fighting, and with billions dead, the survivors-the Gears of the Coalition of Ordered Governments, along with a small band of civilians-have been forced to destroy their own cities and sacrifice their entire civilization to halt the Locust advance. The last-ditch measures have succeeded, but at an enormous cost: the survivors have been reduced to a handful of refugees. Escaping to a haven on the remote island of Vectes, they begin the heartbreaking task of rebuilding their devastated world. For a while, there's hope . . . making peace with old enemies, and once again planning for the future. But the short respite is shattered when Vectes comes under siege from an even deadlier force than the Locust-the Lambent, a hideous and constantly mutating life-form that destroys everything in its path. As the Lambent's relentless assault spreads from the mainland to the island, the refugees finally understand what drove the Locust from their underground warrens and sparked the global war. While Marcus Fenix and the Gears struggle to hold back the invasion, the Coalition faces a stark choice-fight this new enemy to the last human, or flee to the wastelands to take their chances and live like the human pariahs known as the Stranded . . . even as Coalition chairman Richard Prescott still guards one last, terrible secret about the Locust, the Lambent, and the future of mankind. . . . What do you think?

Storytelling is fine, the story itself is what sucks, but that doesn't matter, 99.9% of video game stories are doodoo. As long as the gameplay is good the game will be fine.

It is very difficult in a game like Gears of War to have a good story. Gameplay and stroytellying in videogames fight over one another and aren't cohesive at all. They fight with each other for spotlight and it is difficult to find a balence with the two. Especially in a game like gears that has a mediocre premise to begin with. Games need to find another way of telling a story other than gameplay, cutscene, gameplay, cutscene.

I don't understand why people make a big deal out of this. A video game has a bad story?! Practically unheard of.

Let's not pretend Gears has a credible plot. You discover that your planet is inhabited by underground beings who want you dead. 1. Fly to another planet 2. Make contact and see what they want, sue for peace 3. Start building space stations in orbit, gradually move the population up, until you understand your enemy well enough to defeat them 4. Try to capture some locust, develop a virus 5. Locust live in tunnels. Chemical warfare. Start pumping under the cities first, so they can't burrow underneath. 6. Study your enemies to find a weakness. They must need food. Water. Something. Poison their water. 7. Shut up and just admit you have no story.

The storytelling was good, the story itself was alright. Karren Traviss is a good writer though, I have a feeling she will do an above average job.

Haha Gears always releases some amazingly emotional looking trailer than then the game falls flat. I wish the games were half as epic as the trailers were.

The Gears of War novels from Karen Traviss are fantastic. I love them.

As for "redeeming" the story... Well is the Gears story really in need of redeeming? Is it really any worse than the typical shooter plot? Sure, the original wasn't too deep or emotional but did it need to be? It was enjoyable and the banter and sarcasm between the characters was funny. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

And I feel the same way about Gears of War 2 aside from the whole Maria schtick which personally I do not understand why that whole story arch recieves so much hate on system wars. Why is Dom having a wife and being upset that she's been gone and then later having to... put her out of her misery a hilariously bad story by the accounts of other users here? Guys with big muscles and guns aren't allowed to have emotions or lives outside of the battle, is that right? But if a game doesn't try then you see it get lambasted for being a brofest.

Gears of War is a shooter about guys with huge muscles and lots of blood. No matter what it may try it's going to lose in the story department because of that in system wars regardless of any of it's actual merits.

Pretty much this. While ill agree gears doesn't have an RPG-level story, i belive that its good for a shooter. I was in disbelief when the Dom-Maria cutscene happened, i haad to stop playing for about 10 minutes.

I don't mind the weak story; the game is more about the sci-fi war and over the top visceral action.

I'm still on the fence if I'm going to start off on SP or MP. I want to know the ending; but at the same time I want to rank up quicker than my friends. Argh!

Does anyone actually care about the story in GeoW? If you want a good story, you'd be playing Mass Effect or Uncharted.

It doesn't have a good plot, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a good story. On paper GeoW has a great plot (humans are the aliens, and are being driven to extinction by the locals who are taking back their land), but the story is crap because ultimately it's just a bunch of bald space marines eviscerating monsters and it never explores the deeper implications of its setting. Uncharted takes a fairly standard treasure hunt story and makes it so friggin' fun and the characters are so lovable that it doesn't matter if the basic "get the treasure before the well-funded villain" scenario is nothing new.

Because it's a horribly directed cutscene(I think the script was the worst offender on that part), not because they aren't allowed to have emotions.

Gears has to be redeemed? how Its story is fine and so is its storytelling.
as I've said before maybe you should stop, look around stop skipping cutscenes and put down the lancer because there is quite a good story there. If I go into most any fps or tps this generation and skip the cutscenes and ignore the story then I can say then I will also think those games have bad stories...doesn't mean they actually do though.
