Lets say Nintendo suddenly stopped making mario games. Could the system survive (in terms of quality not sales)

How about xbox. If Bungiee suddenly stopped making Halo games for 360 would it beging to die in terms of quality.

What about Playstation. If Sony were to suddenly stop making Gow or uncharted games would PlayStation begin to start dieng in quality)

If they dropped the Mario Franchise there will be a drop in sales but they still have plenty of IPs to choose from to sell.

Examples?

Pokemon, Zelda, Metroid, F-Zero, Kirby, etc....

In terms of quality, yes, they definitely could have. They have so many IPs that they could focus on to make the next Mario (in terms of quality). Top 3 video game franchises are Nintendo owned (Mario, Pokemon, Wii"___"), although sales don't really indicate quality, but it says something atleast :P

Microsoft and PS3 probably could have done something else too.

Nintendo losing Mario would make a lasting impact, but recoverable. MS would be put in a coma and probably would not wake up, unless there's a miracle. I think making a company lose two big while others only lose one is unfair, but it wouldn't kill Sony.

Bungie is going to stop making Halo games for the 360 so I guess we'll see.

Don't know about Nintendo.

Sony wouldn't be affected that much.

In the end, Sony would come out on top as far as being scathed by your hypothetical situation because this generation Sony does not have an "Iconic" character right yet that is exclusive to itself. When most people see a PS3 they think, Final Fantasy, and a few other choice IP's but many of there signature series are not even exclusive to the system anymore. Where as Nintendo, Mario is there Icon, their blood, and if they stopped making Mario games then something bad must have happened to Shiggy and then Nintendo would suffer a massive shock. Microsoft wouldn't hurt as much, but they don't have that much to really fall back onto besides that for brand identity.

isn't Pokemon in the 100-mil category.

yeah...easily. Ninty has tons of good IPs to work with otherwise.

MS has Gears, but putting that game past a triology seems like it would be a daft move.

MS would be better off than Nintendo since they haven't based their entire platform around 1 character. Plus, they get plenty of multiplat titles. The Wii would only have 1 AAA exclusive this gen if it weren't for Mario

Nintendo. No more Mario would be a huge loss. Could you imagine this gen without SMG and SMG2 two of the best games this gen? Nintendo could survive but losing Mario would take a huge dip in quality and would make the gaps in between Nintendo games even longer.

Microsoft. If it was original Xbox then I would say this would be the biggest lost. Considering the only reason 360 exists is because of Halo but since the main series is over and the rest (Bungie's last game and 343's games) will be spin-offs i would say it wouldn't be much of a loss.

Sony is probably the only one that wouldn't suffer a big loss. As Playstation never really had some killer app that made the system, it was more about variety hence while Sony doesn't have a mascot.

None of these companies would suffer in terms of quality. Miyamoto, David Jaffe and the creator(s)of Halo (I don't know their names) will still be geniuses without those franchises. Also, another thing to remeber is that these aren't the only franchises they have. IMO MSoft will be hit the hardest because IMHO I think that Halo is MSoft's only DECENT franchises. Everything else is dead to me. But Ninty and Sony could recover easily mainly because they have more hit franchises due to them being in the Industry much longer.

Ninendo could easily mange without mario qualety wise. I know they don't make many new ips these days, but that more to do with the fact that they love money more than they don't have the talent

Sony will deal with, make a new IP and move on. Microsoft might be in trouble, considering that Halo is the only huge series on the Xbox platform apart from Gears of War and Forza. Nintendo losing Mario would be huge for both Nintendo and the gaming industry, leaving a huge vacuum in the platforming genre and making it a niche genre. Nintendo would move on, and there would a whole bunch of platformers trying to fill the void that Mario left. Come to think of it, maybe more 3rd Party developers would start making games on the Wii and succeeding because one of the bigger powerhouses are gone.

Actually, Warhawk (PS3) is actually a remake of the original Warhawk for PS1. It should be more like "knowing the PS3 only has Gran Turismo".

Yes. While Mario is one of their key franchises,Nintendo still has plenty of other keytitles like Zelda andMetroid to rely on, oh and also those Pokemon games seem to sell out all over the place!

I think they would. They still have their other big guns such as Zelda, Pokemon and a franchise that might be even more important nowadays the casual Wii Sports and Wii Fit. I highly doubt they would survive without Shiggy though,

No where one door closes, a window will open. Basically the industry has enough talent that someone will fill in those shoes nicely in terms of quality. Although replacing Miyamoto level quality would be impossible. SO if you asked me could Nintendo be the same level of quality without miyamoto? I say hell no.

Both would hurt alot, but Nintendo and Microsoft could probably manage without Mario/Halo.

Sony would be fine.

Nintendo: End of gaming as we know it, since Mario has been the face of gaming for 25 years now. As a company, Nintendo will survive. They have Zelda, they have Metroid, and most of all, they have Pokemon. Microsoft: Again, there will be tremours felt. Halo and Master Chief have become household names. Simply killing them off means Microsoft would take a hit as far as brand visibility is concerned, seeing how MS is still not perceieved a sa 'gaming' company by the general public, unlike Nintendo. Sony: Yeah... no. None of Sony's franchises have had the impact that Nintendo's or Halo have had. Possibly it's because Sony usually kills an IP at the end of each generation, and moves on to the next big thing (which is great! It fosters creativity :D) but no Sony franchise is really that big. Remember Crash or Spyro? That's where Uncharted and God of War will be ten years down the line :(

I think yes. But i think they wouldn't be in the spot they are today.

The 360 could be fine without halo. Its a big game but the 360 main sell point is xbl and multi-plats and the acarde games. Halo is huge but i think they can get past it.

What do You mean with 'mario games'?
Do You mean they would stop making platformers, partygames, sportsgames, puzzlegames etc?
Or simply not mario themed?

Either way they could survive. Their quality is not dependant on mario as a character or his genres. Though they excell at mario games, i am sure their mentality, passion, budget and decision making would make any kind of game succesful.

TC's post shows one of the main reason that I prefer my ps3 over my 360 and wii. Sony does have huge blockbusters, but it's software lineup doesn't rely on 2 or 2 games. They are constantly realizing new IP's each gen and a lot of them are amazing games. When you think of Nintendo you think of Mario and Zelda. When you think of Microsoft you think of Halo. Who exactly is the face of Sony?

This isn't a fanboy rant so please don't confuse it as such. I own all systems and understand that they all offer great experiences. I'm just stating why my preference goes with the PS3 so please nobody get butt hurt over it.

Nintendo will easily survive, sure Mario may make them buck loads of money but they also have other games that make them tremendous amounts of money. Although it does mean that that they will no longer be able to make many failsafe games such as Kart/2D and 3D games.

In terms of quality, not sales? I'd think Nintendo would become a better company if they lost Mario, and not force feeding him into IP that could be better with original characters. That's one thing I think Nintendo seems to lack as of late, and that is good original characters. I've been playing some Majora's Mask recently and can't even imagine what happened to all the creativity of their teams between then and now (The Skull Kid seems at first to be a really shallow character that is just the typical Nintendo antagonist, but the further I get into the game, the more I feel sorry for him).

Microsoft is pretty versatile when it comes to creative new IP, so I don't think they'd have any problems... except it would probably be coming from a licensed third-party (like Epic) and not a first party.

Sony is probably the best suited out of the three to give up something and replace it with something new. All their first party developers are amazingly creative and innovative when it comes to new ideas and design. Nintendo might be able to make a really good Mario platformer... but they've been doing that for 30 years. Sony knows how to make something new.

Nintendo: Yes, Because they have others (Ie Zelda, Samus, Donkey Kong, ect)

Microsoft: No, Because in reality all that they have is Halo to them exclusivly, AND EVEN THEN it ends up going to PC.

Sony: Yes, Because Sony has a million different 1st party IPs, if one goes away they always have new ones and backup. xD

Well I assume the devs who've been working on Mario all these years would be making something else instead. And since Nintendo is pretty good at making games I think the quality would still be there.
