Hey, I'm new to this system wars kinda stuff.  I get that cows are ps3 fans and lemmings are xbox 360 fans, but I was wondering where the terms come from.  Does anyone know?  It just seems completely random; and pretty intense, too, this group naming thing remind me of some kind of west vs. east cold war thing.

Lemmings has refered to Microsoft users since 1985, during which a super bowl commerical aired, and cast lemming as pc users.

Lemmings are also said to be called that for being "stupid enough to follow their leader off a cliff".  As with Cows having a way of "constantly being milked of their money by Sony".  Sheeps of Nintendo are said to be "blindly loyal into following their shepard."

Cows are loyal to Sony.

Lemmings are loyal to MS.

Sheep are loyal to Nintendo.

Hermits are loyal to PC.

Manticores have no loyalty and there shouldn't really be any in system wars.

Currently Cows are in the process of making a come back. Since Sony Day we have been owning hard with some awesome updates, new game announcements, and Halo gettin a 7.0 has only made Cows more bold...that and Jessica Biel recently announced she was a cow on E! (PS3 owner)

meh. It's a debate at best...you may own all the consoles but whats the point if your paying out the arse?

I can repsect the Lemmings more than a manticore...at least they choose a side you flip flopper! :P

That and nintendo has a reputation of being "kiddy" and sheep are gentle animals soooo put 2 and 2 together.

At least we play games for games and not for bragging rights over the internet.

That Halo score affected the Hermits...not the lemmings...

i dont respect manticores because they do have fanboy traits and they act like they look down on fanboy behaviour.

When in reality, the manticore is the lowest on the sw totem pole, having only been made up in like 2006.

essentially, they are noobs.

see, the problem with choosing just one side is that I dont get to play games relevant to my interests that dont appear on my chosen platform. for instance, I love zelda, I'm Really excited for Mass effect and Bioshock, and Final Fantasy and MGS are two of my most favorite franchises evar. i cant lpay all those with just a Wii or Just a 360 or Just a PS3.

How about this: I'm on the Games side.

Those are the exact games that made me not go fanboy this gen. Although I'm not buying a ps3.

SW is good for laughs. Also, its the bussiest board so plenty of good links show up every now and then.

blizzvalve

i was here the day manticore wa sfirst proposed.

someone made a thread with a picture of a manticore proposing thats what we call multiple console owners. It took a while catching on but it eventually took roots.  that was late 2005 some time if memory serves

the other name have been around since like circa 2002.

they didnt exist. systemwars is a very differne tplace today than what it was pre-early 2005.

so Until that one day, a person who had a Gamecube, PS2, and an Xbox NEVER posted on system wars.

pretty much. either they didnt post on system wars, or they chose their favorite console to represent.

sw.com and sw2.com are proof of what im saying.

a business litigation firm website and a godaddy.com add?

wow you are clueless.

systemwars.com and systemwars2.com are branches of the gamespot family who have broken off from this very forum years ago. geez, i need to fill you rookies in on your history.

My bad i guess? you couldve just written out the whole URL.

(PS3 owner)

NextGenNow

you cows can keep Jessica Biel. Stephen Colbert and Maddox are sheep, lmao owned.

But were the only rational people here.

Hardly, there have been forum posts about this before. Look, this isn't meant to insult your, flame you, troll, or whatever. It's my opinion - but quite frankly I see manticores as either being scared to own up to the reality that they prefer certain games, platforms, et cetera - or just being elitists who only carry the manticore badge because they think it makes them better than everyone else.

Frankly, the manticore badge is old - every platform is going in a different direction, to claim that you really support *all* of those platforms 100%, that you don't like where one is going more than another is naivete.

i dont respect manticores because they do have fanboy traits and they act like they look down on fanboy behaviour.

When in reality, the manticore is the lowest on the sw totem pole, having only been made up in like 2006.

essentially, they are noobs.

JPOBS

:|

The term "manticore" started pre-2006.

How the hell are they the "noobs"?

The term manticore doesn't stop people from having preferences. Everyone is biased, "manticores" were never unbiased. It's impossible. It's a huge misconception of the group made here.

Do I support all the platforms? Yes, do I support them all equally? No. They all have pros and cons, and I have praise and complaints on all of them. This is what a "manticore" once stood for.

Poor history lesson for me, considering I've been here during those time frames and did what he says didn't happen.

I support videogames too - that doesn't mean I don't have opinions about what makes a good game, what direction the industry should go in, and where the development effort should be placed. I'd like to see the millions of development dollars on the Wii that are going to games like Wii Play, Warioware, Mario Party 8, et cetera be placed towards another Pikmin game instead.

Given the audience and direction the games on the Wii are moving in, I prefer the 360, PS3, and PC. That doesn't mean I hate Nintendo, but it does mean, given my opinion on the direction the industry should go, that I oppose the Wii. I don't want Nintendo to vanish, rather I'd like to see Nintendo change their attitude and focus on advancing the hardware once again.

As long as Nintendo remains in the mindset they have with the Wii / DS - we will never see another game like Ocarina of Time - a game that had amazing art **** yet also offered cutting edge graphics, sound, and gameplay. So, does that make me less of a gamer?

Calling yourself a manticore implies a naive belief that conflict is somehow bad, that by opposing certain systems or directions, one is somehow less of a gamer. I don't buy it, and I find the elitist "i'm a gamer, not a fanboy" attitude of those who call themselves manticores, irritating.

Your whole view of a manticore is that of some later manticores that essentially ruined the grouping. As I said before manticores are biased, they have opinions, they rant and rave just like the other groupings.

It isn't what the term means any more, and as a group manticores have become tainted. The usual manticore post is an arrogant, condescending remark that off-handedly implies they're somehow "more" of a gamer for thinking all the platforms are just peachy keen. Taking on the moniker of "manticore" shows support for this modern meaning of the term, and it's not something I'd self-apply, for much the same reasons that, even as a 360 supporter, I don't consider myself a lemming.

I think there's something rotten in the state of Japan, so I'd say the "manticore" moniker really can't exist in this generation... it's just too much of a plea of neutrality in this era of system wars, and far too convient in a time when gamers need to be making some harsh decisions on what direction the industry is to go in in the HD-gaming era.

I know it's been tainted, I mentioned that in the other response to you. I take on that title as how it once was, not how it is now. I don't support it's current meaning, hence the reason I posted in this thread about it.

I wouldn't consider the manticore some unbiased nuetral. I can make decisions on the direction being a manticore just as good as I could as a fanboy. Just b/c I take that grouping doesn't mean I can't say bad/good things about each and every system.

I respect your convictions, I hold similar convinctions, but I refuse to wear a badge corrupted by the practices of its holders. You're an individual with your own opinions, why subscribe to an arbitrary title such as "manticore" - which, even in its conception, arrogantly put itself above the "lowly" fanboys?

I would say that you're the exception, rather than the rule, of what a manticore has become in these forums. Yet this doesn't make you a paragon, it simply leads to needless exposition of how your meaning for a commonly loathed term is different than someone else's.

Manticore is such a tainted title these days, and I  frankly don't think they could exist even in the traditional sense in the current era, given how diverse the market has become.

I don't see all lemmings, sheep, cows, hermits, or manticores to be equal within their groupings. That's why I can be an individual and yet still stick with the grouping for the sake of system wars and really nothing else.

Tainted or not, I'll keep defining it as how it once was, and maybe I'm not alone (whether I am or not doesn't really matter to me). Call it nostalgia of better times if you wish.

They can and do exist as they once were, the current era doesn't offer that much diversity relative to previous generations. The main component to the majority of the diversity stems from the Wii imho. I don't see what's so difficult about supporting/putting down all the current systems at once.
