PS2 was $100 more expensive than Dreamcast and debuted a year later than Dreamcast.  The launch titles for PS2 were generally laughably bad.  Yet, PS2 sold like hotcakes and buried the Dreamcast in sales.  GameCube came out a year after PS2 with a $100 cheaper price tag, yet GameCube got buried as well as Xbox. 

Fast forward to today.  PS3 comes out with a price tag $200 higher than 360, and it is failing.  The games aren't great, but neither were the initial PS2 games. 

So, PS2 comes out a year after Dreamcast with a $100 higher price tag and sells like mad. 

PS3 comes out a year after Xbox 360 with a $200 higher price tag and sells poorly. 

This leads me to believe that if PS3 debuted at $500, it would destroy the 360 in sales.  But wait...it did.  There were 2 models of PS3 at first.  The $500 version was one of those models. 

So, PS3 did debut $100 higher than 360, and sold poorly.  PS2 debuted $100 higher than Dreamcast and sold incredibly well.  Also, 360 is set to obliterate the original Xbox sales with a $400 price tag.  But Sony couldn't sell a $500 version of their console? What gives??

The PS2 sold very poorly at first. It's sales picked up after some big games were released. However, I don't believe history will repeat itself, as there were a number of factors that lead to the swansong for the Dreamcast including bad third party support and just being a tier below the PS2 in terms of processing power. Problems that the 360 does not have when stacked against the PS3.

The PS2 didn't sell great at first, it took about a year for the sales to take off.

Excuse me, but while I try to find the hidden logic here, I'm going to take a glass of kitten....

The big problem is the price diffrence between PS2 and PS3...$300.

That's like only offering PS2s in two packs.

I'm a MGS fan, but I won't get the PS3 for just one game. It has to come up with more games I want to play and right now there are none besides MGS4 (and initially DMC4).

False. MGS never was a system seller :) Despite how good Snake Eater was. TBH, theres not a game on PS3 that interests me. Now that SVR series is MultiP & 360 has a racing sim, they took all the bragging rights away from Sony in my case, so theres not one reason I can think of to buy a PS3 & once blu-ray players are $399-$599 this year.. everyone else will feel that exact same way & and will opt for a stand alone BD player coupled with either a Wii or 360.

I was talking about Japan actually. But perhaps I was wrong...I doubt I was though. It'd simply be realistic if X360 did better there than the Xbox. It currently has a ton more games aimed towards Japan than Xbox 1 had during the same time frame. A better price. A bundle with Blue Dragon, a game that received great scores from the renown Japanese mag Famitsu.

If I'm wrong, then it simply doesn't make sense :(

I'm a MGS fan, and i can't afford to miss out on Snakes last mission. Personally i can wait till the price goes down, and some games come out too. But really...360 and PS3 share most of the best games togethor. There really isn't a strong selling point for the 360 over PS3. You are WAY OVERESTIMATING the popularity of Metal Gear Solid franchise.

MGS2 sold the best.  The attach rate is 1 for every 20 PS2s :lol:

Halo 2...attach rate is a tad less than 1 for 3

SSBM...attach rate is a tad less 1 for 3

PS3 has sold around 3.5 million. 

Let's say PS3 sells 25 million in its lifecycle...seems feasible at this point. 

Let's say also that MGS4 has the same popularity as MGS2 based on attach rate. 

MGS4 would only sell 1.25 million :lol:

The 360 will end up costing me more than the PS3 in the end. $480 + online gaming fees every year = more expensive than the ps3. I am going to just go with my ps3 unless things change. Microsoft , you are supposed to drop the price NOT raise it !!!!

It's just because gamers have changed; nobody really cares about a working "next-gen" movie format anymore; we just want good games. At least PS2 gained some momentum with great games. 

First the PS2 didnt sell like hotcakes its first year out....they sold like 10 to 12million i believe. Secondly, you lemmings never acknowledged the $500 PS3 before it was discontinued...lemmings always used the $600price as their so called ownage.  Third: why would anyone get the lower end PS3, take not from the 360core, which is utter useless garbage. 

And given the PS3 is $200 dollars more than its rival and not $100 this time, expect it to start leaving the 360 behind after 2years (November 2008, quote me on this)...

I only say 360 because Wii will no doubt be the competition...in sales.
