If metal gearl solid 3 only sold 4 million copies why would you expect MGS4 to so so much better. I know the game is a classic and fairly popular with hardcore gamers, but doesn't it seem like it's fanbase is dwindling? Is there any logical reason to believe that it's actually going to push ps3 sales of anyone bessides seasoned gamers?jrhawk42not sure, its in japans top 10 list for most wanted game. i want the ps3 for this game.

Halo 3 was on that list too if I'm not mistaken, it's really not acurate for a sales forcast in japan though.

bcz MGS3 was the joke of the series, mor eof to fill in plot holes and prepare for the real project MGS4....MGS3 was a prequal
also MGS4 is diffrent in many ways

halo 3 was rated 19 on that list for japan. but you are correct, it is on the top 20 most wanted in japan. If metal gearl solid 3 only sold 4 million copies why would you expect MGS4 to so so much better. Only 4 million of the 120 million PS2 owners bought MGS3?
Then, chances are that MGS4 could sell 4 million (or a bit more - I guess people might want to start playing the series with the final game)...but it'll probably sell a whole lot less than that.

I see your a seasoned MGS player. MGS3 was easily the best in the series.
Also, don't just hype MGS4 because it looks pretty, try playing some of the games.

it was interesting im not saying its bad, but MGS2: sons of liberty was one of my favs... i liked MGS1 on PS1 too, bcz that was my 1st stealth action game though...
but ur right i lied
MGS acid (PSP) was the worst... lol dam card style play.....

Don't use ratios, that's a terrible method. First of all, their weren't 120 million hardcore gamers, more like 120 million people playing Madden. Second, did you consider that people might buy a PS3 just for MGS4 (like me), and among them, the attach rate will be 100%. We have no idea how it will sell, don't try to speculate, not that sales matter in the slightest.

i dont understand the logic behind this one. are you saying 120 mill ppl who bought the ps2 are hard core gamers? i figured at least 80% was casuals who bought it for some type of casual game. but i guess that is just me.[QUOTE="Planeforger"][QUOTE="jrhawk42"]If metal gearl solid 3 only sold 4 million copies why would you expect MGS4 to so so much better.agentfred

And yet it sold the worst. Wonder what that says about the series' fanbase?agentfred
What do sales have to do with this? MGS3 was the best in the series, regardless of how many copies it sold. Anyway, 4 million is still excellent, not that it matters.
Do you figure that out of that 100+ million there were more "hardcore gamers" than there were when MGS2 sold 7 million with a sales base of about 20 to 30 million?
AfterShafter
No, but at that time, the PS2 was relatively new, and owners of it probably had a much higher attach rate than they did later on, if for no other reason than they lost interest.

Sorry about that, I misunderstood, I thought you were saying MGS3 wasn't the best.

No matter how you spin it, losing some of the MGS fanbase while the PS2's fanbase increase is never a good thing.
It's simple. Look at the sales for the Gran Turismo series and it will make sense to you. Just because one dips in sales, doesn't mean the one after it will do the same.raynimrod
While true, the racing genre has far more mass market appeal than the stealth genre does.
I think MGS4 will do well, but I see it struggling to get past 3mil in the first year.
MGS is the best game franchise for me. I owned a xbox 1 and played mgs2, loved it. sold my xbox, bought mgs3 loved that aswell, but not as much as #2, now i must bug my friend enough to give me mgs1 and ps1 memory card.
MGS4 will be one of the most selling games on ps3, no dubt about that, Lots of people love it and they will buy a ps3 for it

For who? Not for me.
Anywat, if it sells 4 million on the PS3, that'll push millions of consoles, and thats a great thing anyway you look at it.

Agreed.
Since MGS2 was such an awesome game, one would think MGS3 would at least sell as much (if not more) as MGS2 did. But nope.
MGS3 sold 1Million less than MGS2 did.
At the end of the day, sales don't determine how good a game is. So long as I end up getting a copy (even if it was the only one sold) i'd be more than happy. Sales don't determine quality, just quantity:)raynimrod
That's cool.
But this is a thread specifically discussing sales.

the fanbase isnt dwindling they r just quieter then other fanbases. they still have alot of fans but they r just waiting patiently for mgs 4. and i've said this before, i really doubt its gonna go to the 360, what i do think kojima will do is that he will make an exclusive not mgs 4 but something different just for 360, like metal gear portable ops 2 lol. but it is gonna be a system seller, cuz that is the game im waiting for, that is the reason im gonna buy a ps3 and maybe a few others but that is the main one. and the same with lots of other people
