If metal gearl solid 3 only sold 4 million copies why would you expect MGS4 to so so much better. I know the game is a classic and fairly popular with hardcore gamers, but doesn't it seem like it's fanbase is dwindling? Is there any logical reason to believe that it's actually going to push ps3 sales of anyone bessides seasoned gamers?

Halo 3 was on that list too if I'm not mistaken, it's really not acurate for a sales forcast in japan though.

because it's a Cult classic, games like halo is a MASSIVE cult classic and just sells tons, but metal gear solid while not as big, still has a huge cult following, where people have followed the series from the start, plus there is only 5 million ps3 owners so a lot of people who follow the series will buy a ps3 for the game.

Has anyone noticed how crappy the aiming on MGS4 looks in the trailers? It looks just as awkward as First Person aiming was on every prior MGS (MGS2 and MGS3 and Twin Snakes). Slow and shaky target recticle, really hard to zero in on a target. What's up with that?

Fanbase does not determine gameplay. Halo isn't fun because it was marketed a lot.

I don't think MGS4 will get marketed the same way. Especially towards casuals. It definitely won't contain the word "believe."

Only 4 million of the 120 million PS2 owners bought MGS3?

Then, chances are that MGS4 could sell 4 million (or a bit more - I guess people might want to start playing the series with the final game)...but it'll probably sell a whole lot less than that.

I see your a seasoned MGS player. MGS3 was easily the best in the series.

Also, don't just hype MGS4 because it looks pretty, try playing some of the games.

Anything less that 3million sales for MGS4 will be a disappointment.

Right now, GEOW holds the crown at 4million.

Don't use ratios, that's a terrible method. First of all, their weren't 120 million hardcore gamers, more like 120 million people playing Madden. Second, did you consider that people might buy a PS3 just for MGS4 (like me), and among them, the attach rate will be 100%. We have no idea how it will sell, don't try to speculate, not that sales matter in the slightest.

What do sales have to do with this? MGS3 was the best in the series, regardless of how many copies it sold. Anyway, 4 million is still excellent, not that it matters.

i dont understand the logic behind this one. are you saying 120 mill ppl who bought the ps2 are hard core gamers? i figured at least 80% was casuals who bought it for some type of casual game. but i guess that is just me.

Do you figure that out of that 100+ million there were more "hardcore gamers" than there were when MGS2 sold 7 million with a sales base of about 20 to 30 million?

Didn't the TC make a thread asking a question about sales? Thus, wouldn't "how many copies it sold" be pretty integral to the thread - moreso than which was the best in the series?

No, but at that time, the PS2 was relatively new, and owners of it probably had a much higher attach rate than they did later on, if for no other reason than they lost interest.

It's simple. Look at the sales for the Gran Turismo series and it will make sense to you. Just because one dips in sales, doesn't mean the one after it will do the same.

While true, the racing genre has far more mass market appeal than the stealth genre does.

I think MGS4 will do well, but I see it struggling to get past 3mil in the first year.

MGS is the best game franchise for me. I owned a xbox 1 and played mgs2, loved it. sold my xbox, bought mgs3 loved that aswell, but not as much as #2, now i must bug my friend enough to give me mgs1 and ps1 memory card.

MGS4 will be one of the most selling games on ps3, no dubt about that, Lots of people love it and they will buy a ps3 for it

Face it, even though the game is great the control scheme and the style of gameplay was not very casual friendly. With MGS4, they are making it so it supports the more shooter type game for those who aren't particularly familiar with the story, etc. It's also hyped a lot more than MGS3 was and if it delievers, it will sell like crazy.

Anywat, if it sells 4 million on the PS3, that'll push millions of consoles, and thats a great thing anyway you look at it.

All I'm hearing is that he's saying "when other games to play came out, people lost interesting in MGS." Bet Sony wish they had Halo, a series the exact opposite seems to happen to.

At the end of the day, sales don't determine how good a game is. So long as I end up getting a copy (even if it was the only one sold) i'd be more than happy. Sales don't determine quality, just quantity:)

If metal gearl solid 3 only sold 4 million copies why would you expect MGS4 to so so much better. Is there any logical reason to believe that it's actually going to push ps3 sales of anyone bessides seasoned gamers?jrhawk42

the fanbase isnt dwindling they r just quieter then other fanbases. they still have alot of fans but they r just waiting patiently for mgs 4. and i've said this before, i really doubt its gonna go to the 360, what i do think kojima will do is that he will make an exclusive not mgs 4 but something different just for 360, like metal gear portable ops 2 lol. but it is gonna be a system seller, cuz that is the game im waiting for, that is the reason im gonna buy a ps3 and maybe a few others but that is the main one. and the same with lots of other people

No, not at all. Rather, I'm insinuating that people got bored of the series mighty fast because stuff that is much more accesible/enjoyable came out.

You kidding? 3.3 million less... Barely broke half of what its predecessor did, after the console's user base had gone up over 3x.

At the end of the day, sales don't determine how good a game is. So long as I end up getting a copy (even if it was the only one sold) i'd be more than happy. Sales don't determine quality, just quantity:)raynimrod

Agreed.

Since MGS2 was such an awesome game, one would think MGS3 would at least sell as much (if not more) as MGS2 did. But nope.

MGS3 sold 1Million less than MGS2 did.

AfterShafter

You kidding? 3.3 million less... Barely broke half of what its predecessor did, after the console's user base had gone up over 3x.

Trends are trends ..... so what is it going to sell then by looking at this data ?

It dosent matter if the 3rd didnt sell as much, they lost half their fanbase, if they do a good job advertising it they can get alot of new people interested in this game, maybe some casuals will like it and maybe the 3 or so million that didnt follow up with the third one will like the direction mgs took with the 4th and pick it up...its all advertising

Wow. Less than half?

That doesn't bode well for the series.

No, just over half... MGS2 sold 7 million, MGS3 sold 3.7 million. So it broke half by 200k units. Pretty pathetic, all considered, for "the best in the series" on a system with a vastly expanded user base.

If metal gearl solid 3 only sold 4 million copies why would you expect MGS4 to so so much better. I know the game is a classic and fairly popular with hardcore gamers, but doesn't it seem like it's fanbase is dwindling? Is there any logical reason to believe that it's actually going to push ps3 sales of anyone bessides seasoned gamers?jrhawk42

first off the ps2 had toomany good games for everybody just to go out and by 1 game, ala halo3....

the ps3 on this hand has the last chapter to mgs, with evrything being revamped from controle, to the graphics, everybody will wont to play this games, and its a game that will show wwhat the ps3 is capable of. it will sell millions garenteed, it may be gs fisrt 10 with the new rating sytem

How should I know? I just know that the MGS series' sales dropped *SHARPLY* with the release of its last, supposedly "best" game. Should they make another crappy one like 2 to sell systems then, I wonder?

Not me.

I'll be purchasing a PS3 simply for MGS4.
