Let's say the first Crytek game with CryEngine 3, and Half Life 3 (supposedly based on the Source 2 engine) get released in the same year. Which one would you expect to have superior graphics?

Seeing that the Cry Engine 3 is specifically talored to consoles, so it is much dulled down from the full potential of the Cry Engine2. I would pick the theoretical source 2 as valve is a dedicated PC developer.

I wish I knew ANYTHING. It would be great if Valve build a new engine for the next full HL (not episodic).

Well Cryengine 3 has been designed for consoles. Who knows about source 2..... what we do know is source still holds up shockingly well for a 5 year old engine.

Engines don't really determine whether a game has good graphics, there are probably a hundred other factors involved. I thought this was obvious by now, given how we've seen spectacular-looking games and crappy-looking games with UE3...

Hmm, hard to tell...

Has Valve actually done anything graphically significant since Source?

Not saying that Valve is'nt a quality entity but it has'nt shown anything nearly as graphically capable as Crytek that I can think of.

My point being:

The current gfx world champion vs Valve which sort of has to reprove itself. I honestly don't know.

Comparing CryEngine 2 and the Source engine is like comparing apples and oranges. The beauty of the Source engine is the fact that it can run with a four year old machine at the time Half Life 2 came out, while CryEngine 2 pushes even the best machines in terms of graphic capabilities. Still, it's nice to have an engine like Source that you know that can run with every darn machine out there that's at least decent.

I think Source 2 will be the next Graphics King.Source 1 is an awesome engine even nowadays with so much competition.Cryengine 3 will also be great but its just another version of Cryengine 2 and in a way Cryengine 2 is much better looking with Crysis.

Nah, it ran on Unreal 3, but it sure as hell shows how spectacular the engine can look. Mirrors Edge too...

edit*

Woah, wait nope you are totally correct.

Holy hell it runs on unreal 2.5 (same as previous Irrational games i.e SWAT4), with Unreal 3 features implemented.

Wow.... just wow.

i don't know, it depends whether cryengine 3 has improved the cryengine 2 engine, and they've just included console support, or whether it is a console exclusive engine. If that was the case source 2 would win, but cryengine 2 vs source isn't even a contest.

I'm not expecting Source 2 to beat CryEngine 2, Valve builds games based on hardware install base via Steam hardware survey. They make their stuff to look the best it can without alienating people with decent but not high end hardware.

It will however easily exceed what we have seen from the console optimized CryEngine 3, I have no doubt about that.

Source 2, CryEngine 3 is just CryEngine 2 optimised for consoles.

didn't this thread just happen? have i gone back in time?

anyway if cryengine 3 is just console exclusive, and doesn't improve upon the cryengine 2 for pc's then source 2 would win.

edit: lol it diverted me to the second page, so i thought it was a new thread, i guess i need to get used to these multi page threads.

We dont know nothing about source 2 yet.

Cryengine 3 is great but i think Source 2 will be far more impressive and probably we will only see it on PC and next consoles. Just look how source 1 is still looking great. (orange box, Left 4 Dead...)

Supposedly Cry Engine 3 is going to be scaleable for each platform so the PC version will still look far superior to the other platforms versions of the engine. I'm hoping both turn out well but i'm guessing Source 2.

We don't know that CE2 > CE3 yet. it's possible they make it amazing, but 'scalable' so that it scales down to the lower quality of todays console, yet still has the power to run top quality PC titles. Just because its' tailored' for consoels doesnt mean tht epc features won't be included. But then again, you never know.
