Unreal Engine's tiny linear environments, with purdy backdrops are nothing compared to the might of CryEngine 3. Behold, realism AND scale.

Blisteringly realistic forest

A whole city, rendered up to room detail

An amazing realistic island

I'm waiting for the day when video game graphics reach the level of Pixar, where overall fidelity is more important than anything else.

In close quarters UE4 makes CE3 look last gen. Ans we sont know how UE4 handles huge scales, but the mountains part of the demo looks incredible.

Lets wait until UE4 is on PC before we can compare. To me based on what i've seen of UE4. Its takes away the crappy blurr effects that helped consoles with its frame rate drops, lack of AA, and screen tearing. Blur blur blur....:?

Crisp HD next Gen visuals.

Sorry but no. I think CE3 looks great but the particles and vibrancy of what was in the UE4 stuff looked great. Also the volumetric smoke and the dynamic lighting in it was amazing. Also that last guy, have you seen his stuff in UDK too? he doesn't just do CE3 and his UDK stuff is still mightily impressive.

Here is an example of UDK power

The lighting in CE3 annoys the heck out of me, it's like the sun is always really glaring and neon looking and the lighting coming off it looks artificial sometimes. It does have some tasty particle shadowing though which really adds depth. But there is a map called "My forest" for CE2 and it looks better in some ways than that CE3 video.

Overall we haven't seen much of the power of UE4 yet and only saw a tech demo and a 10 minute editor presentation. CE3 has been out for a long time now and people have found out how to output it's potential. Also more games will use UE4 anyway

every time i see someone judge an engine by a games textures.... it makes me want to kill something but yeah this topic is pretty stupid, we've never even seen a UE4 game yet.

I'm a bit confused about your complaint about it being "very static". How are you find it static when the demo has the temple crumbling around the main character, a large amount of dynamic lights and real time GI, massive amounts of reactive particles, lava flowing with actual emissive lighting, and per pixel lens flare.

It was the exact opposite of static. The demo almost went out of it's way to show dynamism and avoid being static. If anything the CE3 demos are more static as the only dynamic thing is lighting. Also texture? really? you really don't have a clue do you?

I still come back to a comment on Kotaku where they wrote, a developer left the UE4 showcase and said "It was the most impressive thing I have ever seen in my gaming career" so that should say something about it

Both are held back by teh consoles and weak-@ss PCs. They would need to target high-end PCs to impress. Maybe UE4's scalability will help.

I laugh at Epic's catching up game, claiming that their new engine is revolutionary. PURLEASE. They have a real-time WYSIWYG editor, WOW congrats! Welcome to Crytek circa 2001. Fully dynamic lighting with global illumination? WOW congrats! Crytek had it in 2009! ORLY, UE4 now has unique materials that actually interact with lighting? Great, welcome to Crysis 1 in 2007. The only good thing that UE4 had was the particles, and Epic didn't even make that. Nvidia did. Crytek doesn't have millions to spend on a tech demo to showcase how beast CE3 really is, but the modders show how powerful CE3 really is.

Who cares if Crytek did it first? Unreal engine has produced better games overall and is the engine of choice for a lot of devs. And we will see even more games using UE4 next gen again. It obviously does something better if devs flock to that over CE3 all the time. CE3 may be a great engine but the games it produced so far are crap

Also UE4 is being made for like 10 years at this stage, so they had this stuff in place for a long time, they just never released it

Yes, what matters is the graphical prowess of an engine above all else; not it's ease of use, documentation, and licensing. That's why CE is so commonly licensed... oh wait.

The reason UE3 isn't real-time, is it was built for 'this' generation of consoles, and CE3 doesn't end up looking much, if at all, better than UE3 on the consoles. They're not playing 'catch up' they're keeping up with the times in a realistic fashion. id/Crytek like to be the first develop tech, and some of it is rendered useless or sub-par for a generation or two...

You have no idea what graphics engines are for. Unreal enigne can do the same very well, but unlike cryengine 3, it has a very well designed system that allows for instant creation and experimentaion and packs alot of new graphics features and physics, it is also capable of making everyting from overthehead arcade games to full 3d physics simulators in every system even ios wihout porting problems.

That's nice rendering power for sure. Now what about the actual editor and workflow? Developers develop, and engines are chosen for bigger reasons then just rendering power.

Damn... they need to bring that concept video to reality ..... even if it isnt sim city 5, if they actually made that game it would slaughter sim city 5 ... Gaming needs to take bigger steps... this is an example in the sim genre that would be brilliant. Problem is, who will actually do it? .... painful to see how narrow this industry has become.
