I have to give it to crytek with crysis 2...the games graphics/mainly the lighting...it's so damn good, just walking around a torn down nyc looks phenominal. I had the time to hook my PC to my HDTV and with the right calibrations (color/brightness) it's amazing how good this game can look..just squinting your eyes shows where this graphic engine is heading and thats photorealism, IMO...and yes, without MODS!

Even for consoles that is. unlike other top graphical games that rely on a specific artistic stylle to make up for inferior engine (faked lighting, graphics) Crysis 2 just has sheer tech and realistic graphics behind it...not overusing shine..not having a clayish/plastic look. like most graphical titles do.

The only thing it needs is a texture pack..i can ONLY imagine what crysis 2 for PC will look like when mods arrive/dx 11..mind boggling.

Thoughts?

Crysis 2 isn't anywhere near photorealistic, nor is its art-style aiming for photorealism. The lighting system may allow it to have the most realistic lighting that is fully dynamic but that doesn't matter if the developer isn't trying to make the game look realistic.

Crysis 2 failed to impress me in every way possible...I don't see why people like it. Its boring and nothing new..

__________________

Small plain linear levels......I don't see how some people say there designed so well....It looks like Crytek put no effort into making them compared to the first Crysis. Very simple and corridor like...

Cod like gameplay(mostly the MP)

Graphics are the same if not worst then the first Crysis

boring uninteresting story

Too many stupid scripted unneeded scenes and events

It may not be aiming for total photorealism, but it surely looks more photorealistic than most other FPS.

Bloom and HDR is off. I know I could have made it look better but I don't see any point in only showing the pretty side of Crysis 2, especially considering the abundance of tiny compromises you find littered all over the game. Kevin V certaily was'nt kidding when he called it inconsistent.

Does'nt help either that I use Steams built Screencap function and link them directly. Crysis 2 in particular benefits from forum friendly image sizes so you won't have to notice the blemishes.

I definitely agree at times the game does look photo realistic, but you need the perfect spot for that but it does happen in the game at times :D

http://i54.tinypic.com/20uwf87.png

The game gets too much hate because they didn't make it for hardware 5 years in the future like Crysis 1.

Looks like you did'nt just turn off HDR ;) Anyway, I'll give you maxed Vanila Crysis 2..

No use of Wasdie's tool this time. Crysis 2 as intended by Crytek at EXTREME.

Like it or not, this is how it looks.

i'm sorry but i've played shttered horizon...unless it's some kind of mod which i haven't seen...the game in no way indicates a direction to photorealism. arma 2 does head towards it..but i still prefer what crysis 2 has done..much more impressive.

Crysis 1 is all about the jungle but has bad aliasing on trees even with 8xAA, Crysis 2 has better buildings and AA.

Crysis 1 has better textures but also awful at times.

I suppose what you're seing is a combination of DoF, motionblur and the fact that the trees are moving in the wind.

What does that have to do with the question of AA that I was adressing? But now that you mention it,, it's certainly true that there are a lot of trees on this articular tropical island.

Know what's copy/pasted everywhere in Crysis 2?

Hm, try forcing Anisotropic Filtering. I'm not sure the game actually uses any without editing the cfg or forcing it through drivers. Transparency AA also does wonders for the foliage.

Just remember that AF does not work on any surface utilizing POM which means most of Crysis so if you already did force AF and could'nt tell, that might be the reason. Try typing 'r_usePOM 0' in the console to deactivate it.

Crysis 2 look amazing overall. Though I think with their choices of lower texture resolution overall (though I found a few that are really nice and crisp) and their over use of bloom, I think the visuals are just as inconsistent as in Crysis 1.

In darker areas and night Crysis 2 is stunning. The lighting in Crysis 2 is the best I've ever seen in any video game, and they've even turned down the dynamic lights compared to the original tech demos. When something lights up, it effects everything around it. This was not the case in Crysis 1, only certain lights did that. They've obviously improved their lighting algorithms.

When I see a screenshot of Crysis 2, I can tell it's obviously from a video game. So no, it's not approaching photorealism at all.

Those images are not on very high settings. Your pc is not configured correctly if you're getting the above image quality with the stated settings.

I have tried to reproduce this on the exact same location and i cannot reproduce that abysmal quality you have posted above. The images you have posted above are biased.

I have not modified the game in any way, just the vanilla version with highest settings.

Editedit:

Crysis 2 PC 1.2.0.0

A new Crysis 2 PC patch is scheduled to go live later today. Below you will find a list of the top fixes.

List of changes
• Further improved anti-cheat measures
• Fix for spurious characters appearing when initiating text chat
• Fix for Chatlog doesn't disappear after kill cam
• Fixed occasional login issues
• Changed VOIP defaults
• Fixed some UI aspect issues on multiple monitors
• Added option for crouch toggle in MP & SP
• Fixed a bug where players lost Nano Catalyst points after restarting the game

We're working hard with our Ranked Server Partners to switch the servers at the same time that the patch goes live – but inevitably this will take time so we ask for your patience. When you launch the game, the patch will auto-download. If you cannot find servers, please exit the game and re-start to ensure the patch has applied.

You can check the version number by selecting Properties on Crysis2.exe and selecting Details. The correct version after patching will be 1.2.0.0, and the executable will be signed by Crytek GmbH.

Update #1
Added the Nano Catalyst bug to the list of fixed issues. There seems to be a little confusion about the patch so please note, this is not the full list, but rather the key highlights.

For Steam Users
Steam users will experience some prolonged loading times in this patch for which we apologise. We will update the Steam build in the next few days to resolve this issue.
