Poll Crysis franchise - overrated, underrated, or just right? (57 votes)

Overrated 35%
Underrated 21%
Just right 44%

I enjoyed the Crysis games for what they were, but I feel like the hype was overblown because of the graphics. As far as everything else, the games weren't that memorable to me. So in my opinion, slightly overrated. What about you, SW? Is Crysis franchise overrated, underrated, or just right in your opinion?

Older than Christ.

2-3 were shat on by pc gamers and largely ignored by console gamers.

A company that thought it deserved better, alienating their audience in the process.

It's like, a big cake. If someone was trying to eat it. Pink and fluffy. But full of aids.

Crysis 1 was one of the best FPS of its time. truly amazing game in every way. then sequels came and they suck. although i have to admit Crysis 2 was not bad game. it was ok but incredibly dumbed down. Crysis 3 on other hand is pure garbage and always forgot it even exist at all.

we do need another Crysis like original. especially after i played Metro Exodus another sandbox graphics king.

I thought Crysis 1 and Warhead were incredibly boring games.... the suit powers barely offered anything, the destructibility was very limited.... same Korean soldiers over and over again.

As a hermit I have no problems admitting this was the modern day Sony Equivalent to graphics whoring. At least it wasnt led by cinematic and the engine was flexible though.

The MP could of been great... but it was a dud.

Call of Duty 4 was a better game at the time.

I thought it was boring as ****. It did encourage me to get a decent rig at the time, which allowed me to enjoy a number of other games. I appreciate it for that.

Aside from streamlining Crysis 2 is a very good example of how to mess up story-telling.

It's a Halflife 2 knock-off, but so completely incomprehensible anyone here who can figure out what was going on, who the characters were or cared without jumping on to Google or lying through their teeth deserves a medal. I recall before release the writer boasting about how good the story was going to be which makes the end product all the more baffling.

By comparison Crysis has a really simple B-movie plot, with Warhead going even further and making it almost entirely about making the lead character likeable, with the plot around him superfluous, dem guys bad. Dis' main bad guy.

On a related note Peter Antovski > Hans Zimmer, i'm so fucking sick of Hans Zimmer.

*Franchise* is what's wrong with Crysis. The first one was Far Cry evolved: great sandbox shooter with lots of room for improvisation, which unfortunately also ran out of steam a bit in the second half. I remember Warhead being more consistent throughout, but maybe not quite as much fun as the first few areas of Crysis 1.

Crysis 2 was a step backwards, away from sandboxes and destruction physics, into much boxier, more static and linear level design. I didn't enjoy it especially.

Crysis 3, again, looked great but there was nothing really to separate it from most other console shooters.

I'm still waiting on a proper sequel to the first Crysis.

This thread is taking history out of context, Crysis wasn't wasn't praised for being a superb must play... Crysis was just a visual marvel and was ONLY praised for that but it was a solid game.

That's false I'm afraid.

https://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/crysis

"It's only a technical show case", became an edgy response in an attempt to downplay the praise. Which praised both it's gameplay and visuals.

-

If we are arguing pc gamers in particular were letting graphics override everything, no argument. That continues to this very day. Just have to look at Metro, pc gamers are posting screenshots and blathering about visuals, not it's gameplay. Like a middle aged man with a sports car the pc becomes a means to attain gratification, like a big digital penis. Oh so much bigger than everyone else's. Such big.

How many lauded Dusk? Not to stereotype, it does have it's audience.

The franchise itself is just right. The original is the one that is a classic.

This is a complete lie, Crysis was critically acclaimed. Actually it was the haters that started the notion of it only being a graphicswhore thing, a tech demo, pure lies.

Crysis back in 2007 was the only game and the soul reason why I got into PC gaming in the first place! When I saw Crysis for the first time, I was blown away how it look and I knew I had to build my first PC just to play it and it really meet my high expectations more so.

Crysis & Warhead is worth playing. But I would skip out on 2 & 3 because they are only a let down after Crysis and Warhead, I did in fact had fun with Crysis 3 which was a hell lot better then 2 and it's still very demanding. Crytec went console mode after Warhead and it led them right to bankruptcy and so with that, the series isn't overrated as it used to be but it's definitely "Underrated" because Crysis 2/3 hurt the series more so.

The joke used to be, "Can it run Crysis" is still used by today's benchmark but now, it's "Can it run Metro Exodus"

Crysis was more of a benchmark than a game. The problem with 2 and 3 was that people actually tried to play them. Talk about a snooze fest...

They're hyped more as a graphic benchmark. Which is pretty sad. They're games too but they're not *great* games. I dunno about some people but I like to play my games. Not just to look at them.

It was heavenly acclaimed, but I think the hate came from was PC gamer who had to upgrade their latest hardware in order to play Crysis cause of it's time, it was heavy demanding, alot of PC gamer were upset cause they couldn't run the damn thing on their old hardware but for me, I got ahead start by building the latest components just to play it lol.

Back then, I thought the graphics was really good for the time. I don't think it's optimized that badly either, considering dual core was still mainstream back then.

That... is exactly what I mean, even when trying to make the gameplay interesting it comes off as boring.

There are shooters with far better power/stealth systems... Crysis did nothing beyond graphics outstanding... the scale was ultimately pointless.

I'd say Crysis 1 on consoles is garbage. Good looking garbage, but still.

Crysis 3 is meh.

Have 2 on steam, haven't played it yet, but might give it a try sometime.

I enjoyed 1 and 2 quite a lot, though neither quite lived up their full promise.

Crisis 3 was all over the place. Narratively it was a bewildering disaster.

They're ok, nothing outstanding, but the first one needed a monster of a PC to run it the way it should so it became famous for that; now it is still a meme in the PC community for that reason.

Just right. The first Crysis deserves its acclaim. And the sequels deserve the bashing they got. Crysis was the best open-world FPS of time, and it's a shame the sequels abandoned that in favour of a linear FPS like COD.

Crysis and Crysis Warhead are legendary FPS, both gameplay and visual wise. Many games can't still come close to the interactivity that game possessed.

If someone asked me what the greatest, most influential first-person action game of all time was, I'd probably say Half-Life. Second and third place would be Doom and Quake. Fourth place, however...would be Crysis.

The game is simply incredible. It created the perfect blend of hand-crafted, detailed levels while still feeling open enough to satisfy one's urge to explore and essentially do what they want to do. The gameplay was creative, allowing for action-heavy, stealth, or a combination of the two. The nanosuit is probably the best armor of all time (yes, even better than the Mjolnir suit from Halo), allowing for a variety of approaches while still not making you feel invulnerable.

On top of being a great game, Crysis also looked amazing and had decent AI to boot.

I think the reason Crysis, especially now, gets so much hate is because A.) it's associated with PC elitism, and B.) it is punished for people's lack of creativity. I've used this analogy before, but Crysis is like a well-stocked pantry, and you were asked to bake a cake. Some people might to lame cupcakes, some people might use that box of pre-made crap...but some people will unleash their full creativity and take full advantage of what is there and make a multi-tiered cake that is awesome. Crysis is like the well-stocked pantry; if you can't make use of all the awesome things it has to offer, that's your fault, not the game's. Sometimes it's nice to not have your hand held.

Also, the multiplayer was criminally (CRIMINALLY, I SAY!!!!) underappreciated. Great blend of objective-based multiplayer with a Counter-strike-like cash-based purchase system...with vehicles!

The first Crysis had awesome gameplay and the graphics where ahead of it's time the sequels where generic cash grabs with boring gameplay. Here's some gifs I made from a video I took years ago having fun using maximum strength.

Just look how the wheels turn on the dumpster people talk about details in gaming these days Crysis push physics and destruction to another level not bad for a 12 year old game.

Right?

I remember my first truly awesome moment where I took advantage of everything in the game. There was a patrol of soldiers, about four of them, but they didn't spot me. They were walking single-file in a forested area. So I turn on my cloak and grab the last guy, then use speed mode to dash away. I watch the soldier pass out and die as I hold his throat in my hands. I then turn on strength mode and, from behind a rock, toss his corpse at his comrades. They panic, and spread out to search the area.

Perfect, I think *evil smile*

I then use speed mode, zoom up to the guy on the left, but I get spotted. Doesn't matter; by the time his buddies have reacted and started shooting, I've got this asshole soldier in my clutches as well and I've zoomed away 100 yards or so. I turn on strength mode and throw him against the rock cliff, likely shattering his spine.

Two left :D

At this point, the guy leading the patrol fired off a flare so there are reinforcements coming. I pull out my assault rifle and, using the customization options, attach the silencer and 4x scope. I find a nice perch up the hill and hide in some bushes, pull out my binoculars, and spot all the enemies I can. Working from the outside in, I start picking off soldiers with headshots. Strength mode helps me out here as it stop my gun from swaying. I am able to take out three of them before they zero in on my position and I take a few shots. No bother, my suit can handle it (but my energy was low at that point, so I decided to relocate).

There's maybe two or three guys left. Me, enjoying stealth, decide to finish this whole encounter as I started it. I equip my silenced pistol, which *fun fact* doesn't decloak me when fired if I keep it to a single shot. So I sneak up on the remaining soldier and put one bullet in each of their heads.

Except one. I leave a survivor to tell the story. I decloak in front of him and as he spots me, I run away and move on to the next area and continue my mission. Where dozens (hundreds?) of encounters just like this await me. Bases to sneak through, bases to blow up, vehicles to destroy, soldiers to toy with, barrels of fuel to explode...

Just correct. Crysis 1 and warhead are great games and i dont mean only graphically . Crysis 2 was shite.

Crysis 3 was overall an improvement over 2 and felt a bit more like crysis 1/warhead . It felt and is much more open than Crysis 2 despite been still linear but the levels are big and you can approach your objective with a few more ways compared to 2 . I'd say Crysis 3 is a bit underrated and is a decent game. Still no where close to 1 and warhead but at least it was somewhat enjoyable

  • Story is pretty bad to terrible. It has some weird moments too that are pretty far out there. The resurrection of Prophet. The aliens go from flying, efficient machines to on-foot soldiers is just utter stupid. They also adapt to hot climates when they had the technology to freeze everything which means they probably would have won the war with humans if they froze the environment and stuck with their flying machines.
  • Crysis 2 had worse textures and pre-programmed physics.
  • The Korean leader you fight at the end of Warhead had no mask yet could handle shotgun blasts directly to his face. Dude is superman.
  • The final level in part 2 and 3 is the same when you jump into that beam thing that destroys the alien mother or whatever the hell it was you did. It was so stupid I don't even remember exactly.
  • Crysis 1 fighting the koreans was the best part of the entire series. The whole alien thing should have been pushed way back into the background to provide reason and a mystery.
  • The challenge was not consistent. Some parts were super easy and others irritating. It had poor game play balance. While Crysis 3 was beautiful, it was pretty short and quite a bit of time is spent within indoor environments. More than necessary imo and quite bland in stark contrast to it's outdoor beauty.
  • The A.I. was easily thwarted and basically it was limited to flanking, search and cover.

While many will disagree in hindsight. They weren't really that well received on social forums and got a ton of critical flak. Sales of Crysis 1 basically broke even and it's apparent that the series did not provide enough financial aid to help Crytek push past a couple of very poorly sold IP's which is why they are back to being a broke dick small company that no one really talks about anymore.

Crysis would have been way better if they did away with the whole alien shit completely and had you going up against human foes for the whole game. The first few missions is Crysis are great. They are really open and allow you to approach situations from many different angles. The A.I wasn't amazing or anything but they had jeeps and helicopters which made for a good challenge.

Whenever I feel like playing Crysis again, it's only a select few levels that I want to play, and all of them have you fighting humans primarily - the alien focused levels just sucked.

Thinking back, it was probably the Cryengine editor that came with Crysis that I got the most fun out of.

Underrated I would say.

Crysis 1 is easily the best in the series, and one of the best FPS ever made.

With the right mods Crysis 2 can still look impressive to this day and Crysis 3 doesn't even need any mods.

the first crysis is a great barometer of taste in gaming. i appreciate the gameplay may not be everyone's cup of tea but with so much on offer, anyone who dismisses it as just a tech demo objectively has terrible critical faculties. @mrbojangles25 captures why nicely with his pantry anology.

Just right. Crysis 1 and Warhead are rated highly while most thought the rest were shit. Crysis is probably one of my favorite FPSs. Some say Crysis was just a graphics demo. These people never understood how to play or what you could do in the game and shouldn't open their mouths.

Incoming rant!

I still can't believe how Crytek decided to completely butcher the gameplay in the sequels that they had masterfully conjured up earlier. They chose to make the series worse, which made their PC fans hate them and they didn't even succeed in making the console crowd interested. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

It's a bit weird no one else has taken the suit idea from Crysis and basically made a new Crysis with a different name. No one is making an ambitious FPS game specifically for PC anymore. But I believe there still are a lot of PC gamers out there that would be interested in such an FPS made for PC.

I refuse to believe I'm the only PC gamer who's tired of playing dumbed down versions of earlier PC games.. Enough Crysis 2 and 3, Battlefield 3,4,5, Wolfenstein: cinematic console version. Where's my Crysis 1 sequel? Where's my Battlefield 2 and 2142 sequels? Where's my Return to Castle Wolfenstein sequel? Thief?? Quake?? Half-Life?? And so on..

Crysis 1 (PC version) and Crysis Warhead were fantastic and everyone I know that played both loved them. Crysis 2 was shit and most of the people I know agree. I don't know many people other than me that played Crysis 3, but I thought it was a lot better than Crysis 2.

Leave it to the peasants to DC it by calling it tech demo when in reality their precious exclusives are nothing more than a tech demo with less advanced tech, more like face simulators. In that sense Crysis is underrated.

I wont talk about the series as a whole but imho Crysis 1 is overrated while Crysis 2 and 3 are underrated. Yes, Crysis 1 was more "open" (w/e that means) but there was nothing interesting that took advantage of that "openness". It had the same problem as Far Cry 2 i.e. enemies that could see you from miles and miles away so you resorted to cammo and crouching in order to travel through HUGE chunks of terrain without being seen, wich was boring asf. Crysis 2 and 3 felt more focused and were more fun to play imho

btw, I played both the PC and PS3 version of Crysis 1. I can post proof if hermits dont believe me. This is my boxed PC collection. You can see the version EA classics of the Crysis Maximum edition there.

Just right, i mean the first Crysis is rightfully acclaimed as the best thing Crytek have ever done and the sequels went into a direction that mostly disappointed fans of the original and caused the IP to die.

Crysis was a successful title because of a combination of things, its exclusivity and appeal to enthusiasts of PC gaming caused it to be a must buy for anyone getting into PC gaming, so that led to a powerful word - of - mouth marketing push. Its gameplay and design is fantastic to this day, and its moddable structure catched a lot of attention because of passionate video gamers that further build on top of the already state of the art graphics.

The sequels were built mostly because Crytek logically thought that a broader demographic via the console market would result into more sales, so a lot of design went into catering to the console market which inevitably strayed away from the design of the original Crysis. Can't blame them for that, unfortunately it backfired tremendously.

It's a bit weird no one else has taken the suit idea from Crysis and basically made a new Crysis with a different name. No one is making an ambitious FPS game specifically for PC anymore. But I believe there still are a lot of PC gamers out there that would be interested in such an FPS made for PC.

Playing metro exodus. its more ambitious than Crysis 1 ever was so yes there are developers who make more ambitious games than Crysis 1.

I swear we just had this thread within the last few months.

I only played Crysis 1, thought it was appropriately rated.

I only played the first one, bought a second AMD 5770 to play it smoothly.
It was an amazing experience, I was blown away by the graphics!
Then I had to live with crossfire for a few months until I sold off one of the cards.

Thief?? Quake?? Half-Life?? And so on..

You're not that's for sure I blame COD4 popularity influence for the whole dumbing of PC games if you look at the timeline COD4 and Crysis came out in 2007 every PC series after that not counting some expansion packs became dumbed down. F.E.A.R., Battlefield, Medal of Honor, Crysis ect... I miss the days when there was two different versions of a game. A console one and a PC one both sides got what they wanted. PC gamers didn't get a dumbed down version or a graphic downgrade due to console parity I wish we could go back to that. As Great as PC gaming is these days to me the golden era of PC gaming died with Crysis I'm so glad I got into PC gaming back in 2005 to experience some of that era my only regret is I didn't get into it earlier. I been waiting for a true F.E.A.R. sequel forever not that glow in the dark trash F.E.A.R. 2. And far as the BF series goes boy did that turn quick into a COD clone BF2 to me will always be the goat of that series. BF3 was a huge disappointment marketed to the COD4 fans. It's damn shame that FPS are so dumbed down now and that we don't get AAA PC exclusives games anymore it's the worst thing to happen to PC gaming besides that bloatware Windows 10.
