 Here's hoping Darksiders makes a return. ;)

CRYTEK USA WANTS THE DARKSIDERS SERIES TO COME HOME

thq stock

When THQ perished earlier this year, the developer of the Four Horsemen themed Darksiders franchise,Vigil Games, perished alongside it. There were more stories to tell though (there are two more Horsemen, after all), and much like Vigils core creative team was given a second chance recently, Darksiders may as well.

Crytek USA CEO and former Vigil Games head David Adams said that his studio is going to attempt to buy back the Darksiders series when it goes up for auction this month. Going to bid on Darksiders IP, said Adams on Twitter, Put seven years of heart and soul into that franchise, and I think it belongs at home with its creators.

Vigil co-founder Ryan Stefanelli backed up Adams statement later on saying that Crytek will be the owner of the franchise, not just the former staff behind the games. When the Darksiders IP goes up for auction, Crytek will be bidding for it, Steffanelli told Destructoid, Not much more since the rest is left up to courts and legal shenanigans, but were still excited at the prospect.

This is a marked turn around for Crytek USA, the newly formed subsidiary studio of Crysis 3-maker Crytek. When the company hired Adams and a select number of Vigil staff in January, the company showed a great deal of excitement for the people, but not for the Darksiders series. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said at the time that his company had no interest in continuing the Darksiders series. While that was a shame, it wasnt all that surprising either. Darksiders 2 only sold around 1.5 millioncopies, well below expectations for the game.

Other studios have expressed interest in the Darksiders property. Platinum Games Atsushi Inaba, one of the men behind Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, said in January that hed be interested in buying the series provided it was affordable.

I just finished the first one not too long ago thanks to PS+. I was going to get it anyways but it's awesome I got it for "free".

Anyway I really enjoyed it, like a Zelda/God of War mix, the story and characters are interesting and I want to see the adventures of the other 3 horsemen.

I'm going to start the 2nd one pretty soon as I've heard it's even better than the 1st.

It definitely has issues, namely any part that isn't a dungeon (and those awful sections where you shoot things with the right analog stick). It's like the game wants me to hate its combat. That being said, getting it off PS+ wasn't too bad and the dungeons were more enjoyable than OoT's for me. Going to start the second when I'm done as well.

If the 2nd one flopped why would Crytek agree to do this?  I liked the second one. Never played the first one. I would just get the Wii U version since it is the best console version and have Carytek USA work on a new IP.

Why would he say he's really hoping to bid for it before the auction? Didn't he just drive the price up for Crytek?

2nd installment of the game simply....well, SUCKED compared to the first. I think the whole open world doesn't fit well with Darksiders...a more linear approach would suit me best.

I never looked at this series before. Then I got the first one free on PS+ and decided to give it a try. What an awesome little gem the game turned out to be. Liked it so much, I bought both it and Darksiders 2 on PC.

So, what about Multiplayer? GOW Ascension obviously beat them to the punch. Perhaps a Co-Op campaign could be the next game's hook. . . .

First of all Crytek has said they have abolutely no intention of ever making a darksiders game. That is also why they didn't bid on the Darksiders IP.

So even if Crytek USA would purchase the IP, they work under Crytek so they won't be allowed to make a new one.

If they do get the IP, I have a feeling Darksiders will be the new TimeSplitters.

It's actually the former employees of Vigil, whom Crytek gave a new job in their new USA studios, who want to purchase the IP.

Crytek wants nothing to do with it. So even if Crytek USA did buy the IP, Crytek won't allow them to make a new game.

Darksiders 2 was my personal GOTY 2012. I really hope they win it. Platinum would be a fine home too, but I think it should stay with the creators.

Exactly. Eventhough Crytek UK owns the IP and may even want to make a new one, they work under crytek now so the decision is not theirs. Although Crytek did show some interest towards the IP.

Very interested to see what Crytek could do with this series. I hope they get it. It would be a shame to let a good series like Darksiders die.
