I love having my whole music collection on my PC and being able to play it on my 360.
I basically start up my 360 and get the music going and keep it going (unless im playing a game where I need to pay attention to what people are saying).
i barely use custom tracks on 360....if i want to listen to music i just put use ipod and put headphones on which ps3 players can also domingo123the only problem with this is you muffle or lose the sound of the game. I think the custom soundtracks work the best if you have your pc connected with the 360 (wifi).
not having custom soundtracks on my PS3 makes me cry. seriously. it is the 2nd most frustrating thing about the PS3 to date for me. #1 being the inability to easily access my friends list in-game and communicate easier.

Obviously, that's not the same at all.

to listen to music on tele i have to turn the game sounds off so i can clearly hear teh song, on ipod i can clearly hear the song without turning off some stuff from the game
its nto a feature i use really. im mostly a SP guy and the music in the game is important to the overall experience imho. playing something like oblivion or the witcher while listening to a rock or heavy metal soundtrack...that aint right.
the one exception for me is excite truck. fun game but the standard soundtrack is just absolutely dire, and racing to no music is wrong on a spiritual level imho. plonked the wipeout soundtrack on a SD card though and its much improved.

It is absolutely essential for:
-Racing games
-Fighting games
-FPS games while in multiplayer
-3PS games while in multiplayer
and are also nice for:
-Sports games
-Puzzle games
-Action games (ie Ninja Gaiden/DMC/Kameo type games)
But yes, I've never used custom soundtracks for games where quiet was necessary or where the musical score drives the action. Nobody really does. But for all the above, you remember why it's so frekin nice.
Yep custom sound tracks are pretty cool. I was listening to 2pac while playing Pac Man CE, it was dope. I just wonder why couldn't the PS3 do this feature?

I'm sure it can in theory. But yea...after a year goes by with this very basic feature when people have been asking for it the entire time...well...you do begin to justifiably wonder.
I could care less.
If I'm playing a game, I want to hear that game, its music and its sounds. Not some random rock song.
And if I want to do that, then I'd just put it on some other way.DireToad
Spoken like someone who doesn't have the feature on their preferred machine.
Custom soundtracks absolutely ROCK for many genre's of game.
By all means, point out the amazing music on Motorstorm and Resistance MP.
Don't worry; I'll wait. You can't appreciate it because you've never had it in the first place.

The point still CLEARLY stands: you can't appreciate it because you've never had the option in the first place.
That was the over-arching point. That point is still a fact and you've only supported that reality by your admission. Thanks for that.
And before you go off the deep end of ignorance, Mr. Toad, please keep in mind that the 360's custom soundtracks feature does not replace all in-game sounds; only the music. All SFX continue to play normally, so before you even go here: NO, simply turning down your volume on your PC/PS3/Wii game and turning up the CD on your stereo is NOT the same thing. Turning down the volume on your TV/computer speakers forces you to surrender your music AND SFX...and even on PC games that allow you to reduce the music and keep the SFX, balance in sound is lost because it's not all coming through the same source.
Just so you know. Since you don't.

in most genres this is a really pointless feature. I think fighting and racing is the only intriguing genres id want custom soundtracks. PS3 will be getting it...theyre probably just holding off on it until PS Home comes out since Home has XMB accessUptown

That is why i think it is such a nice feature since it blends right into the game. They probably think the music replaces the sound effects that is why they recommend using an ipod.

I love the feature. The Burnout games are a lot more tolerable when you can put your own music on. I also enjoyed doing it with Lost Planet's multiplayer. Haven't done H3 with it at all though.
It should make for some interesting times when I get around to Dead Rising :D
Anyway, it's a lot more convenient to have access to your library of music that's on your PC (which might not even be in the same room where you're playing your console) rather than turning the music off in a game and listening to an IPOD or stereo... not to mention putting on your mp3 player earphones while having your gaming headset on... how retarded is that?. Face it people, it's a cool feature to have.

only noobs play multiplayer FPS games with music. Seriously. Audio is such a crucial factor in competitive multiplayer that isnt sports, racing or fighting related. You need to hear people running, jumping, shooting and picking up items all around a map. Music is a major distraction on a competitive level.
I have experienced it and you obviously dont know what you're talking about if you think music is great in every genre. Because its not...unless your playing mindless free for all and dont care about occassionally being blown to crap because you didnt hear a guy coming up behind you cuz you needed to hear Linkin Park - Faint.

Custom soundtrack basically removes the game soundtrack and inserts your playlist via networked computer it doesn't remove the sound effects or speech. The volume is equalized, so it the same as the games music, so you can still hear foot steps and guns shooting just fine. that is why custom soundtrack is better than just headphones or a stereo.
edit: the music shuts off for cutscenes then turns back on afterwards it made playing PSU a werid exoerience lol

Its been a long time disappointment for me as well. I was wanting this feature since the PSOne and thought it was great when MS did it on the Xbox.
Hopfully, with one of the bigger updates, we'll get this feature on the PS3. I don't see why not. If they have in-game XMB, you should be able to play music and chat with friends in game.
No thanks, I tried the feature on my Xbox and quickly turned it off, it shifts my focus away from the game; because i'm trying to sing the words to the song. Also prior to starting a game I always turn the music down at least 40-50% compared to the sound effects (which are always at max.)
It's like Blu-Ray, a nice feature but not necessarily needed.
Streaming music is a sweet feature, especially for racing & fighting games. I was just using it last night while playing SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 :)
What's even better is streaming any type of video with MC. And before anybody says anything, i use Transcode360 :D

why don't you just hook the iPod to the 360? you play video games while listening to music with headphones makes no sense.

well you are right listening to rock or heavy metal with oblivion doesnt sound right. when I played Oblivion I would play The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy soundtrack, that music works perfect with that game.
I have a 360 Action Playlist in my iPod, all the music is from movie soundtracks (scores). Doyou have any idea how much the action music from star wars pumps you up while playing Ace Combat 6. or playing the Terminator orBatmanBeginssoundtracks while playing aFPS or Crackdown.
Playing Halo 3 online with Soundtrack music is amazing.
People I know who don't play games always comment how they feel like they are watching a movie when I'm playing Halo 3 online with my own custom soundtrack.
give it a shot!
I could care less.

true, but it would be better to have the option. and sorry to say a lot of music in some games are just terrible, TERRIBLE!
Just a note: The Ps3 is well capable of doing this, it's just not built into the OS - devs have to do it on a case-by-case basis.
having your own tunes on your 360 is quite cool, though the means trough which you have to rip them on the 360 could be streamlinedshiram
But you don't. Just have your PC turned on and WMP open, or if you kept it, the connecting software from before WMP11. Or just connect your ipod or similar into one of the USB slots. I don't have a single file in my 360 yet it can play thousands of songs.
It's also an awesome feature for sandbox titles like GTA III/VC/SA, Saints Row, Crackdown, etc. Nothing like causing mayhem to your favoriteupbeat tunes or hell, a cinematic soundtrack, or something innocent like that old "Downtown" song... I always thought that song went quite good with zombie apocalypses :D
Hopefully they have it implemented in PS3 games if I ever get around to buying one... someday...

dude! video games, who cares about a professional? it a great thing to be able to play your music, regardless if you like it or not. playing FPS online with movie soundtracks is amazing,
Playing Ace Combat with star wars music is intense
Playing oblivion with The Lord of the Rings trilogy soundtrack is great
Playing racing games with music from the Twister soundtrack is cool
forget profesionals, I don't have a camera team in my house recording me, and my system is good enough that I can play games like rainbow six with music from the Matrix, the terminator, conan, starship troopers and still hear everything clearly in surround sound. if you have the sound volume for the game and the music at the right setting, if the music is blazing well then yes its silly, you just have to do it right.
