New ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Report: Faked Demo, Cut Features And Last-Minute Cops

Fans and journalists were wowed by Cyberpunk 2077’s ambition and scale. What they didn’t know was that the demo was almost entirely fake. CD Projekt hadn’t yet finalized and coded the underlying gameplay systems, which is why so many features, such as car ambushes, were missing from the final product. Developers said they felt like the demo was a waste of months that should have gone toward making the game.”

So the entire demo we saw in 2018. it was all lie,

Nice read. Holy crap, CDPR made ubisoft looks like masterpiece.

Theres so much bad happened in development.

What do you know, its one of those E3 demos that's always going to be scripted and fake at the same time. E3 is really just one big advertising.

The Schreier's article also confirms that they knew there were many problems with the game before release, contrary to what their apology video said.

"While the company extensively tested before the game’s release, Iwiński said it didn’t show many of the issues players experienced. Developers who worked on the game argued otherwise, saying that many common problems were discovered. The staff just didn’t have time to fix them."

I hope this will wake up someone here who claims that CDPR may not have really found problems when they were testing it, or that his friends haven't encountered any glitches when they were playing it.

I've had no issues with it on PS5. I've encountered far less bugs than I do on Bethesda games.

Vertical slices, cinematics and out right pre-rendered trailers needs to go. Hell, you shouldn't even announce the game until you're close to release.

If every game is released like Apex Legends we would be much better.

A vertical slice demo like almost every single marketing demo. Not exactly shocking.

Ever since the massive graphical downgrade in TW3, i always thought in the back of my mind that these people are liars, but because their expansions for the game were great and the final visuals were still great, i let it pass. Pretty slimy dev.

Jason Shreier also confirmed Cyberpunk was originally supposed to be a 3rd person game with wall running and parkour. Damn that sounds nice, they maybe should have played to their strength.

Maybe I'll just skip this game all together instead of merely waiting for a complete edition on PS5.

Glad I wasn't going to have this game be my PS4's swan song.

Good work by Jason Schreier as always. Judging by the state of the game at launch, everything detailed here is as I suspected. It's Anthem all over again; lack of vision, poor management, development cycle which consisted mostly of concepting and prototyping, and then rushing to stitch everything together into something resembling a game in the final months. Looks like they even had their own version of "BioWare Magic."

An increasingly worrying trend. Game studios really need to stop doing this.

@ghosts4ever: Why are you mentioning Ubisoft? Ok, their Watchdogs E3 demo was certainly graphically more impressive than the final game, but at least Ubisoft didn't release a buggy, nearly unplayable mess. Watchdogs on release did look pretty good on PS4 /Xbox One. Certainly a lot more polished than Cyberpunk.

People need to realize this game will never pull a No Man's Sky or Sea of Thieves kind of turn-around. This game is far too broken in nearly every way for that to be doable.

While The Witcher 3 is a great game it wasn't nearly as ambitious as this. You think there are a lot of bugs in 1st person and wonder why they suddenly removed 3rd person? lol... Yeah, sure it was because it wasn't immersive enough right? heh

As I said above, those things simply weren't ready. If you think the game is broken in 1st person which is WAY more restrictive in the things you can do movement wise can you even imagine how broken the game would have been with 3rd person and the ability to do those things? You'd be getting stuck in terrain and falling through the map every few feet.. I agree that would have been awesome though. When I heard the game was cutting 3rd person for "reasons" it immediately threw up red flags for me and I knew something was wrong. You don't just remove an option in a game at the last moment when everything is just fine, especially when given the choice to switch between the two. I pretty much lost any interest I had in the game when they announced that although I'll probably pick it up at some point just for the hell of it... maybe.

Not surprising, not surprising at all. The higher ups and marketing have been pushing out some very fragrant bs for quite some time. Hell even when the higher ups apologize they still can’t help but to sprinkle in some bs with it.

@Telekill: As someone with 110h of gameplay I'll advise you to still get the game if initially you were interested. It's no accident the game is still on the positive side on Steam, from people who actually played the game.

Much of it is just the usual gamer hysteria.

Even though I'm really enjoying it I can't recommend it right now but it's definitely worth the wait.

Cinematic trailers should never be used for game reveal because it is not a game reveal. Game reveal should exclusively be actual gameplay.

Not sure where Jason got his info, but like, of course the demo was "faked." They literally said in 2018 showing it off they're specifically doing representative slice subject to change, and showed off features and abilities you didn't have at that point in the game.

However watching comparison linked in this article it's abundantly clear much of the demo assets and content did in fact make it into the game, and sometimes better than the demo. Granted certain minute features were cut and much of it was rearranged, but as far as I see the demo was fairly faithful to the final product.

Cyberpunk's shit release isn't a case of getting away from their vision, it's a case of the game being blatantly unfinished. That's really the crux of the issue here.

...And? That's standard practice nowadays with e3 demos. Demos are constructed to be a vertical slice of what they want the game to be when players finally get their hands on it. If the game is still a few years from completion, then obviously doing this is going to involve "faking" some things. It's only an issue when the finished product falls well short of what was promised, which is what happened with CP2077.

If you watch the Anthem reveal now, with the knowledge of how the game actually looks, and how next gen (Series X, PS5) games are expected to look, you'll see the game had no chance of looking that good on last gen hardware, and it's kinda embarrassing so many people thought it would look that amazing. All I'm saying is, don't fall for the marketing hype. Don't develop a weird emotional attachment for a game based on marketing material, because it is so often misleading.

Yo I've got a lot of issues with CP20777 despite enjoying it, so if you want to criticize it for running like crap, not being stable at launch, or coming with a myriad of bugs....so be it. Let it rip, have at it.

With that said...

@Random_Matt said:

...To be fair, do we really expect honesty in our demos advertisements?

They're going to paint us an ideal picture, tell us it's similar-but-not-representative of the actual game, and so on.

How many of us tell the unvarnished truth about ourselves on our resumes? At job interviews? No, we "massage the truth", paint a pretty picture of ourselves. We tell our potential employers that the summer working as a barista was actually a business internship where we learned financial management (working a cash register), interpersonal skills (handling customers), and product formulation (coming up with coffee drinks).

We've got a lot to be outraged about in the gaming world, some of it legitimate and some not...I don't think allowing ourselves to be deceived by advertisements--and they are advertisements--is really something we can get too pissed off at other people about.

I wish we showed this much outrage at subpar games-as-service bullshit, rampant DLC, and so on. You know, the shit that's really ruining gaming.

There's a lot to be pissed off about at CP2077, but this? This is not it.

I know it's a load of shit and doesn't really tell you about the game, but I'm pretty happy having only seen two badass cinematic trailers for Beyond Good and Evil 2, and I can wait until they're done doing whatever the hell they're doing before I see any gameplay.

Gameplay reveals should wait until the game goes gold maybe, or enters beta. I mean, show us the game at like 95% completion.

This is why trailers have that big, ol' "not representative of the final product" disclaimer. Everyone should know this by now.

a) While they are cool to watch, they are a waste of resources and do not convey anything meaningful about the actual game.

b) They do lie by default because of "a". 😊

Yeah me either, and I'm not arguing in favor of lowering standards, just saying that advertisements generally represent the ideal, while the actual product is limited by the reality of the current times; in the case of video games, I guess that'd be hardware?

The only thing I can think of that actually exceeds advertised specifications is a car's gas mileage, and that's only because they can get in huge trouble for overstating the mileage a car gets.

Maybe we need to regulate the video game industry to similar standards?

So TL;DR: you're 100% correct, we should not lower our standards. If anything, should raise them.

Where's James Cameron?!

As someone who's put in over 100 hours in Cyberpunk2077, I agree Demos and all that BS should have gone towards the game. If you're going to show off your game at E3, then show it's current state, regardless of how bad it is. We as a consumer know any bugs/issues will be worked on, but don't show us a near perfect demo when that's not what we're getting.

I'm having a blast with the game and loving it, yet i'm taking my time with the main story until the bigger patches roll out. At it's core, this game is one of my favourites. But yea they f**d up on the other consoles. XSX isn't too bad from the 40hrs I played but I ended up switching to the PC version knowing that's where most of their work went.

I'm hoping they redeem themselves like No Mans Sky did. I myself still bought NMS and spent hundreds of hours on it and loved it but I was disappointed at all the lies and missing features. I put it down for a while and now it's a great game with all the work they put in. All the promised features were added and then some. So here's hoping CDPR can recover, regroup and do the same.

Nah, games shouldn't be announced with cinematic trailers. They never tell you anything about the game and they take resources which just add to cost. Even if you need to do it for advertisement then do it once the game is about to be released and people have already seen what it's about.

I'm not a fan of Rockstar Games but what they do with releases is how it should be done. They only announce something and with a gameplay trailer when they are close to release. I don't think they ever release bullshots etc.
