Hi all,

those of you who have seen some of my other posts will know that i am crazy about Dark Souls (i have not even played Demons Souls yet). It has without a doubt - transformed my gaming life - i will never have the same experience with ANY OTHER GAME again because there has basically been a major phase-change in how i now look at video gaming. As far as i am concerned, Dark Souls is now the game against which all others must be judged - and as such has caused me to rethink every other gaming opportunity out there.

A good recent example is Borderlands 2. Without Dark Souls in my life i would have rushed out to buy this hot new game - but im now indifferent to it.

Im trying to move my topics on a little so can anyone give me an example of another game - which changed everything for you? Which game and when and why?

Maybe with some inspiration and left field thinking i can move on from Dark Souls......Let it rip guys!

I agree TC, Dark Souls has now become joint first place for my Game of All Time along with Shadow of the Colossus. It's an extremely well put together game. And after such experiences that really take you away, it's very hard get back into anything else again

I have to agree that Demon's Souls > Dark Souls.

My game is Xenoblade, haven't been sucked into a game like that since the first time I ever played an RPG!

For me it has to be The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, it was the first time i felt i was part of something big, an adventure like i have never experienced before, no doubt the best game i've played at that time and one of the best experiences in my life as a gamer.

This gen i have to say Xenoblade Chronicles, it made me remember why i love JRPGs.

Nothing because that would be idiotic. I play anything I like the look of and that's how everyone should enjoy every form of entertainment or else you're going to miss out on things you might enjoy. So essentially you've taken a step back.

This gen, I'd probably say Stalker or Minecraft. I started my Stalker experiencing the Oblivion Lost mod. What a mindf*ck that was. I'd highly recommend it.

Demon's Souls is good but Dark Souls is alot better. They got the system down for Demon's Souls, they perfected it in Dark Souls. I cant go back to Demon's Souls and its linear level design. Feels like a downgrade. Plus the story in Dark Souls is also more interesting. I dont even remember what happen when i beat the game in Demon's.

Bioshock.

Sad and dystopian but very accessable.

In this generation it was one of the first with a story for grown ups, and action that was still compelling to those who don't pay attention to story.

Probably Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl or The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

after 13 hours of playtime I still don't get the love for Dark Souls. Still need to start playing through the MGS series.

Well...I can say, Demon's Souls was the first game I ever committed hundreds of hours to. In all my years of gaming since the Atari 2600...DeS was the first I ever put that much time into. Dark Souls has followed suit now also. Though I don't have as much time as DeS just yet...I'm sure I will. Both have sucked hundreds of gaming ours from me. They are terrific!

Baldur's Gate 2 for me, it was the game that solidified my love for WRPGs and caused the genre to still be my favorite one to this day. Also Minsc and Boo.

This gen, anyway, Grand Theft Auto IV. Unlike seemingly everyone else, I really enjoyed its more restrained take on open-world crime games. I still have a lot of fun playing the more San Andreas inspired over-the-top sandbox games like Saint's Row and Sleeping Dogs, but none have provided me with nearly the same sense of place and immersion as GTA IV.

Yeah Dark Souls (or, more accurately, demon's souls) is now the standard for gameplay imo. And Journey has raised my expectations for art style in the game industry.

i felt the same way with Demons' Souls and subseqently, Dark Souls, these gaming experiences are without a doubt the closest transcendence for a claim to be made that video games can be considered an art-form.

This generation I'd say, Rainbow Six: Vegas, a game that was SUPER popular but got highly overshadowed. It had iron sights, the best cover system in gaming, plus every mode out of the book (co-op campaign, co-op side mode, PvP and single player), not to mention an insane level of customization. A lot of people applaud CoD4 as a game changer and Gears of War as game that defined TPS games this gen, but Rainbow Six: Vegas really showed me a lot of what I've come to see this generation.

Overall, Metal Gear Solid is a good pick, but so is Half-Life, and so is Super Mario 64 so I say all 3. They all redefined gaming for me (stealth, platforming and shooting), Half-Life and MGS were two of my earliest Mature rated titles (and really amazing ones that weren't Mature just for the sake of it, but out of thematic necessity), and really they all just shaped my perception of gaming while I was young and I claim them all within my top 5 games of all time.

Looking back, there are a LOT of games that changed everything for me in one way or another. Bad Company 2 showed me just how possible massive and fun as hell battles could happen on consoles, Battlefield 2 was a predecessor to that feeling on PC and last gen, Grand Theft Auto showed me how ambitious and massive a game could be in scope and gameplay variety (with damned good writing to boot), Resident Evil 4 is one of the best genre defining third person shooters ever made, etc.

Lots of choices.

super mario bros. was a big one for me just because it was the first game i got hooked on. i didnt even have a console at the time, but i would constantly sink quarters in the arcade machine at my boys & girls club. im sure there are countless assumptions i make on what a video game should play like based on early experiences with mario.

ocarina of time was another one. i had played 3D games before, but it really cemented for me the concept of video games creating another world. there's a point right after the deku tree where the owl flies off to expose all of hyrule field and i was impossibly excited for what was ahead of me. its still a great moment when i go back and replay it.

I don't know about "changed everything", but sometimes I get that "f*ck yeah" feeling that reminds me of how awesome video games are. It's different than just a rating or considering a game good. It's a magical moment of existence. Some games for me are Sim City 2000, Final Fantasy VII, Half-Life, Wind Waker, KOTOR II, Mario Galaxy, Mass Effect, and World of Goo.

Shadow of the Colossus

The 1st game to ever make me realize games can be more then "games" and rather an experience for life. SotC is the true definition of art in videogame form. Journey is pretty close also

Old school shooters in general.

  • Map design was more than copy-pasted rooms with 3ft high walls
  • Weapon variety actually meant that gameplay actually changed based on what weapon you chose whereas today many games you find the machine guns, shotguns, rifles, and even pistols all function almost exactly alike
  • Multiplayer actually consisted of dynamic gunfights where your control of the map directly influenced what weapons you used, and how to use them against opposing players. Today many multiplayer shooters it's whoever sees who first has the advantage, and three shots later someone is dead. That or just dying to claymores and helicopters which is not really a measure of skill.

I would say old school FPS is probably the biggest reason I own a PC since it still remains the home for them. Sadly the only one left on consoles is the Halo series.

When i was in college i stopped gaming so i could focus... needed to prioritize the things that have true worth and the things that are selfish entertainment so naturally gaming needed to go in a sense... ps2 released near the end of college and i had played mgs1 and we had mk tournaments in the dorm but gaming was meh. Then i got a job, a nice place and decided id start light gaming again (2004) i had purchased an xbox and when Kotor released i scooped it up thinking it was a real time combat game (I did zero research) effin blown away to hell and back... ita the most important game ive ever played, and reignited my love for gaming. It made me believe again.

Probably GTA San Andreas, the atmosphere, the freedom, the size of the world was amazing back then.

I think GTA V might be another game that achieves this gaming paradigm shift, at least for me personally.
