Update: Just a little clarification for those slightly confused by this story. David Jaffe, at this very moment, is still employed by Sony. But he is very much in the process of setting up this new Utah-based studio with Scott Campbell. This new studio is said to be independent of Sony, so his role within the company is currently changing or disappearing. He will not be moving to Utah, though.

David Jaffe is no longer a part of the internal workings at Sony Computer Entertainment America. 1UP confirmed with multiple sources that Jaffe is currently working with Incognito Entertainment head Scott Campbell on the formation of a new studio to be based out of Utah.

When asked, SCEA would not comment on the so far unannounced change. "We have made no announcements regarding any change in David Jaffe's relationship with Sony Computer Entertainment," said a company spokesperson. Jaffe himself also has not yet responded to repeated requests for comment, since he started teasing the new studio on his personal blog.

What happens to Incognito? The company is flying high on the positive buzz surrounding online-centric Warhawk and is unlikely to be affected by the shift. Jaffe has traveled back and forth between Incognito and his San Diego headquarters over the development of a number of Incognito-based games, including the recent PlayStation Network release Calling All Cars. Jaffe is expected to continue the relationship.

We hope to hear more on this new studio shortly, so stay tuned.

Yikes. Sony just lost a great developer then...

But I really wish he'd make more large scale games. I think his talent is going to be wasted if he continues on his small pick up and play game spree. Calling all Cars was fun, but it definitely was nowhere near as memorable as God of War.

edit: Nevermine, from that forum post by him it looks like he's staying with sony. I'm confused!

can promise you guys I am still part of SCEA...I just got a paycheck from them! I am still 100% a Sony employee and unless I got fired today and they didn't tell me, I'm still working for them. Also, I love working with the guys at Incog and hope to work with them for a long, long time but I sure as **** ain't moving to Utah...nice as it is, I don't think I could live there long term and I don't think the good people of Utah would want me to

i saw this on g4 yesterday and uh hes just setting up an independent studio, probably to make more downloadable games cus he wont have the funds to make a god of war type game, which is exactly what he needs to do, cory took his thunder with god of war2 and david only wants to make small games. david needs to get to work on the next twisted metal asap

He's drunk most of the time. Can't say I agree with that way of creating, but imagination comes from drugs most of the time. His games are great and they were scored AAA. Get the hint or get out because you hate Sony.

This is about the same as Kojima forming his independent studio while Konami does the publishing. It's better for the developers to leave the publishing logistics, PR, and focus on development.NobuoMusicMaker

Kinetica 7.0 Twisted Metal 7.1 Twisted Metal 2 6.4 Calling all cars 6.7 all awesome games... God of war and Twisted metal black were good. Also imagination doesn't just come from drugs. Tell that to your little brother/nephew/cousin/sister whatever. So 2 out of his last 6 games were AAA. I think you have a distorted sense of reality.
