Really, there isn't any other reason for DOA to exist.
Period.
If I wanted a fighting game, I'd buy VF or tekken. Â

different kind of fan service
Well if this is about DOA having a lot of girls then that's not fan service.

The term fanservice is to include elements into a game/anime/other entertainment medium to excite the audience. Usually fan service comes with more skin and less clothes, particularly on the females.Â
There are more males then females in Dead or Alive you know that right?Blackbond

This has always been a lame attack against the DOA series.
It's funny that people don't seem to realize that it is almost an extension of ninja gaiden in being a fighting game based on timing and intuitive movement and reaction time.
It doesn't try to present a challenge by remembering to push square, triangle, square, triangle, triangle, o, triangle, o, x, o, o. It presents a challenge by forcing chess like combat and reacting to what your opponent is doing.Â
When Team Ninja releases a weapon based fighter with an extension of the core gameplay of DOA, everyone is going to go nuts over it.Â
Team Ninja is developing fighting games on a whole different plane. As the series continues to evolve it is going to leave the other games in the genre in the dust, much NG has done the action world.Â
Sure it would be nice if Itagaki took some of the characters more seriously, and started to move toward more realistic character models but that's not him. He thinks himself a rockstar and his games reflect it. Why not also make the superflous claim that NG suffers from the same problem in that 1/2 of the playable characters are a large breasted female, in Raechel.

I'm sorry intellegent well formed opinions aren't allowed in system wars, say something extremely fanboyish like everybody else. :D

anyway alot of people are quick to dismiss DOA as a crappy fighter because it's fairly ahead of it's time in it's fighting system (which you mentioned being much more like chess). Most gamers dont' really understand the gameplay see the hot chicks and just assume it's a T & A game. Also the game tends to be really balanced at the higher levels, which you can pit any two character against each other and not really have a disadvantage besides your own skill.

I think you've got that the other way round; some people pay too much attention to details while not looking at the whole picture. :)[QUOTE="lordseer"]This has always been a lame attack against the DOA series.

ahead of its time :? compared to virtua fighter 5 the fighting system is laughable, i cant wait to see what the next gen tekken plays like, tekken is always the top tier fighter, tekken 4 was experimental and used a lot of the environment and some people didnt like it cus it was closterphobic, so they took it oldschool with tekken 5. i think they are gonna do a mix of both in 6 and i cant wait.Games should be fan service, we are the ones buying them. While I am really looking forward to VF5 on the X360, I have recently got into DoA2 U and have to say, im suprised it is actually a good beat em up.
It's a lot better than Soul Calibur 2 though. I played that game a lot and it is a very shallow experience. It looks nice, but you can easily just button bash your way to winning, never a good sign.
You can't do that on DoA 2 U, you wouldn't last long on normal difficulty or upwards.
I have only played Tekken 2 and 3 and to be honest they just seemed like a 2D beat em up in 3D graphics in a rotating environment. Im sure the newer versions must be better though.
