The San Jose Mercury News' Dean Takahashi has a bit more details on the rumored Xbox 360 Elite edition that Game Informer reported on earlier this month.

Game Informer had already reported that the new, black 360 would come with a 120-gig hard drive and HDMI out and sell for $479.

Takahashi adds that the new 360 will habe IPTV capabilities, and that the new design will also implement the a chip redesign, shifting from 90 nanometer to 65 nanometer, resulting in a significant drop in cost to Microsoft.

Takahashi he thinks the introduction of the new 360, which will be produced in limited quantities, will not effect the price of the current core or 20-gig models.

See, this seems to ever so slightly contradict itself. If in fact, MS is rolling out a new model, which would even reduce production costs a lot, why would they want to make these in limited quality?

rumor has it that after all the Elites are run through, the premium will will get the 65nm chip and HDMI at the same price it is now, with the 120GB HDD still availabe as a separate item (under $200) so instead of a price cut, they are probably just going to give you more for your money

They are making the black ones in limited quantities. they will eventually make the same spec'd console (but white) that will replace the current premium consoles.

I say this is a stupid move by MS and they won't benefit from it. I think it will confuse the market and help its competition. XBOX just doesn't have the recoginition to consumers that Playstation and Nintendo names have and when they go to the store and see 3 different boxes with so many different things about them they might be turned off from it. We'll see.

I have agree with you that it will confuse the market and possibly help its competition. When you think about it, that would be 3 different model 360s in less than a year and a half. If I was a casual looking for a 360 and I saw three different versions, I would definitely be confused as to which one to buy. I think anybody would confused because you would be thinking well what's the difference between the 3 models.

See this idea isn't new to consumers. Do people get confused because the fully loaded toyota cost more than the base model? Consumers can see the higher price and assume it's got extra features. They all still play the same games in the end.

Remember the Halo edition Xbox? That confused no one.

As for the games not supporting HDMI. That is funny. Cables make no difference to how the game performs. That is like saying I cannot play an HD game on a SDTV since composite cables aren't supported.

I believe that MS will discontinue the current core models and drop the price of the premium to $299 and make the Elite $399 to remain competative with Sony.
