[QUOTE="voxware00"]NMH: oozes with subtext.. no substance my behind
SBB: drips with fanservice, more worthy of keeping than NMH, but not as original or interesting
technically brawl is the superior game, very polished aside from online.. but NMH is so underappreciated because of its technical aspects.. some people don't look deeper into the title and just write it off as a poorly programmed mess, but the writing/design surpass any other wii game , it's taking the medium of gaming to an existential level
i hate to go this far but.. anyone claiming NMH is overrated just didn't get it.. and really, overrated? this is one of the few reputable review sites to give it AAA, it has a 7.8 on IGN
lebanese_boy
So a game can be a programmed mess but still good as long as it has a deep story? This is one of the worst reasoning I've heard. Make it an Anime, not a game, the thing WAS boring and WAS overated.
I just hope the sequel is more playable.
it could have been an OK anime.. except what I admired about the story was that it brought the gaming medium to existential levels , so an anime would not deliver in that area.. thinking it would means you didn't get the game
and you people use the definition of the term overrated so poorly, maybe it was "overrated" as far as GS's score (though i disagree) but you need to look at the general consensus of reviewers.. and by that definition, it was in no way overrated

did anyone write articles like these about smash? now if you beat the game and didn't read these articles, i can understand many people not getting the love for the game.. they probably didn't even bother to checkout the slowmo of the FF scene on youtube either
the game is a work of art and i had even more fun with the games universe after beating the game than i did playing it
Brawl=Melee 1.5
NMH=brand new original fun IP
Which one deserves GOTY? A slightly upgraded version of a game we have already played to death or something new and unique?
starwarsgeek112
Same can be said about almost every sequel that got GOTY awards....so that argument is invalid.
So is No More Heroes really the ultimate Wii game that everyone should own?!metalgear-solidNo More Heroes is the kind of Wii game you buy just because it's only $20 and you want to see what everyone is talking about. There are three ultimate Wii games that everyone should own. They are Mario, Metroid, and Zelda.
So, do any of you have an actual reason why Brawl shouldn't have beaten NMH?
I'd be interested in hearing it.
So, do Brawl fans admit that the Smash Bros series is basically Nintendo's Madden, just with bigger gaps in release? The thing is, Madden is a great series, and so is Brawl - but picking either as GOTY... Why not give it to something new, rather than give it to something that has been done before, but has a new paintjob and a few new bells and whistles this time around?Shafftehr
No, we don't admit that. There's more new additions in Brawl than any other sequel that didn't completely reinvent the series. But apparently, that's not enough.

Brawl is like Madden? Well let's see, there's been one on N64, one on Gamecube and one on the Wii. The N64 game had about 12 characters, don't know how many stages (about the same mabye?) and terrible graphics by todays standards. The Gamecube game had about 24 characters, again can't remember the number of stages and decent graphics/below average graphics by todays standards. The Wii game had more characters still, more stages still and significantly better graphics, a new online component, a whole new adventure mode (Nothing like the one in Melee) and is the third in the series. How does that compare to the diffrence between a sports title of the same series from 06 and 07? Brawl has standard progression for fighting games. Going by that rule mabye we should say SF4 is Capcoms madden? I don't think so.
I wonder be siding with the Super Smash Bros. Brawl side however the online play was where I drew the line, besides that everything else I loved about the game was just as I expected, however with online as laggy as that, it completely ruined much of the appeal I had built up since I don't live anywhere near my friends anymore and I hoped for some great online matches like we used to have. However since its online side of it was botched and I've really got no one else around here I play with, after beating it and unlocking just about everything, I set it aside and mess with it every so often.
In the end, No More Heroes easily took it from Smash Bros because of the failed online, hell Mario Kart Wii should have been a better choice than Smash Bros, except they messed up the system and uped it to 12 racers and made it so even if you win online, you can still lose exp, awesome.
What's it matter anyway? You're delusional. If NMH didn't win the award, then it would have been World of Goo (like at IGN). Let's face it: Brawl got old fast. It lacked depth (Collecting useless crap and a poor level designer don't count as depth) and innovation, NMH is the only reason I will be playing my Wii again before Punch-Out!! (haven't played it since two weeks after Brawl's release).PapaJohn24It lacked depth? That's a new one, especially since GameSpot's review says the game is overloaded with new content that will keep you playing for a loooooong time. Brawl is a sequel, but it feels like a totally different game. People can cry "LOL MELEE 1.5", but in terms of new content, characters, and the smash ball, this is really THE next-gen version of Super Smash Bros., not to mention Brawl is BY FAR the best looking Wii game ever.

1. New characters and stages =/= new game.
2. Super Mario Galaxy is the best-looking Wii game.
[QUOTE="Wanderer5"]While I haven't play NMH.metalgear-solidWhy don't you buy it then? It's not like it's expensive.
Well if I wanted to get it, I need to go through my parents first. I could give it a try, but I probably won't be able to get it yet, mostly becasue of intense violence part.

Stop using other reviews as excuses, everybody here is aware that we're talking about GS's score. Other websites were in general pretty much spot on.Why don't you buy it then? It's not like it's expensive.[QUOTE="metalgear-solid"][QUOTE="Wanderer5"]While I haven't play NMH.Wanderer5

And the violence is very very intense.
I find it interesting that a lot of the Nintendo fans that constantly want to make the PS3 and 360 owners feel bad by calling them graphic whores, shallow, don't care about gameplay but only graphics etc etc. Yet they would rather have an updated last gen game win Wii GOTY instead of an unique, fun and innovative game in gameplay and story.JLF1No. Most Nintendo fans understand what makes a great game. Broken controls, bad graphics, glitches and bugs, repetitive game, no replay value, and only 10 hours of gameplay do not make a good game. Sorry No More Heroes. It doesn't matter anyway, because De Blob, World of Goo, and Mega Man 9 were better than both of these games.

Smash Bros is still the best Wii game of 2008. Period.Willy105
LOL take a good look around and what site you are in. Your in GS and according to them NMH is the best wii game of 08. Which I agree 100%.

NMH bad graphics? I love how the game looks. Its an artstyle. I guess MM9 has bad graphics too. Broken controls game worked fine for me. Glitches and bugs? WTH are you talking about and dont say the bike parts cause thats not a big problem. Every game in its core is repetitive. MM9 all you do is jump and shoot NMh you just slash. NMH was just the right lenght not to long and not to short. I agree there not much replay value,but not all great games need to have this.
dumbed down controls and moves, yet more clones JLF1
Does not understand. How can the controls be dumbed down when they didn't change the controls, and how does Brawl have more clones when it actually has less clones, and those clones play much differently now?

Wow. How short-sighted. The review came out the same week as the game. How can you tell depth from features? You can't. Ask the reviewer a month later if he would say it still had depth, and you would assuredly get a different answer. And don't get me started on the Subspace Emissary. It was a waste of time that served only as an excuse to unlock the characters and stages. No one in their right mind would play it over again. It was boring and slow. The time wasted on the singleplayer could have been better spent on more stages and a real level editor.
NHM is definitely a great game! HOWEVER... I don't think it's better than SSBB. That's just my opinion though.
Both games are GOTY worthy.
