This game deserves a sequal, discussion on what made this game great as i have yet to talk to someone who has played it and didnt enjoy it. Any gamer knows this is a pure deifinition of what gaming should be.Bungie_TreyTree
I hope not. I didn't find Demon Souls to be that great. Personally I though it was lifeless and bland. I've played other Rouge like titles and Dungeon Crawlers that had more life it them and felt more rewarding gameplay wise. All IMO of course I'm sure there are others who don't agree with me.

I didn't like it. And whenever I mention that, people tell me it's because I suck at it. :P

I liked it because it had a great atmosphere. I didn't mind the "lack of story" at all.

It's hard, but it's not cheap. It's also hugely satisfying. You don't find many games like DS nowadays.

The big thing about it was that it was different. Especially in the idea of getting your rear handed to you in your explorations. The game is hard. It's meant to be hard. You are expected to die plenty of times before completing any significant part of the game. The trick is observing your (and through the souls, other people's) mistakes and not being (pardon my British) bloody stupid enough to make the same mistake.

I thought it was alright, but it didn't really seem to reward exploration or experimenting. You have to be too cautious all the time, and that just gets tiring and boring. The game world felt so lifeless and dead. I figure I'll Goozex my copy while the value is still high and maybe try it again when I get it under $20.

I liked it. From Software is concentrating on Armored Core 5 at the moment though. If they make a second, it won't be started on until Armored Core 5 is out. They might do Armored Core 5-2 before it as well.

I rented it some time ago and recognized the difficulty immediately. I could easily appreciate that some strategy was involved, rather than blindly going through the vast areas. However, the world itself seemed rather dull and lifeless and I feel felt no story driving me to continue through.

It's certainly a quality title, but I don't think it deserved GOTY honors.

- Awesome hit detection and weapon realism for a WRPG type of game. - Great atmosphere. - Unique online features. - Lots of great magic and faith based spells. - Sick soundtrack during boss fights. That pretty much sums it up for me, I didn't find it overly hard, but I enjoyed the challange for what it was. Roguelikes and Dungeon Crawlers are often purely turn based and all the skill revolves around stat building and such, while Demon's Souls allows you to use some level of skill, the way weapons react to walls, shields, armor, flesh, etc is really neat, can do some really awesome looking fights because of all of these features combined. The invading/playing with friends aspects are really neat too, the blood splatters and messages add a layer to the game that pretty much has never existed in this type of game.

I think the lifelessness adds to what the game was trying to do, it let me appreciate how screwed over the land of boletaria was, only a few survivors, and there was no deep plot filled with political shenanigans or some evil ruler trying to destroy the world, it was just: everything has been royally ****ed and its up to you to fix it, the atmosphere allows for that sort of dread, that would be lost with constant story progressing cutscenes and NPC interactions. At least that is how I saw it, I can fully understand why others would not agree with those points, but that is why I liked them.

Perhaps I would feel differently if I had done any of the multiplayer. The bloodstains were great, the messages were mostly useless. Far too many were people just asking to get a recommendation for health.

I love this game. The boss battles were terrific. The online was very cool too. Being able to see the blood stains and other people running around really added to the atmosphere. Along with having other people come into your world. I thought the difficulty was perfect too, challenging because it was hard but not cheap and rewarding.

Well I didn't multiplayer too much, but it was cool when I had. I was saved from a lot of potentially lethal situations with messages, so again its an experience that can very from person to person. You mentioned there was no reward for exploration, but there are a lot of really great equips and such off the main paths in a lot of the stages.

i don't think it's the definition what all games should be like tho...

but imo 3 things make it good:

  • it doesn't hold your hand
  • the game always keeps you guessing and on your toes
  • the oppressive art style (environment/graphics/music/enemy design/etc.)

make it a pretty satisfying game to *beat

*note: satisfying to beat, hellish to get there

This game sucked. I haven't played it and have no experience but I'd thought I'd poop on one of Jandurin's favourite games as he likes to poop on ME2 :P

I meant more like falling to my death because it's a way I'm not supposed to go. I love exploring in games and the death penalty made it feel a bit too oppressive, considering I had plenty of other deaths to contend with. At least I left plenty of blood pools to tell other people what NOT to do. I think they should've rewarded people with health for other people watching our blood pools.

oh demons souls, this game deserves a sequel and it deserved GotY. I loved it, every minute of it, terrifying because you could have ran out of all your grasses, and were just about to enter a boss fight, and either you wing it and risk your souls, or run back to the beginning to return to the nexus and have to fight your way back. Tough choices in that game, sometimes you would have to be overly cautious and when youre a noob and you see that youve been invaded its terrifying. the world is empty, and devoid of all life, you feel as if boletaria is royally ****ed,but theres comfort in having a blue phantom.it also provides a challenge, but it dosent feel cheap when you die. beautiful game in the end

The thing about Demon's Soul is people rely to heavily on games with checkpoints every 5 minutes. The reason it comes off as difficult is because people think they can just run from room to room not worrying about death. Well in DS when you die you restart the level so people get frusturated. I agree with you, i dont find it very hard. I dont think the game seperates the "hardcore" gamer from the "casual" gamer like people would like to think. It more seperates the patient gamer from the inpatient gamer.

I'd argue that what made the game so great was the sense of accomplishment felt throughout the game. It was the first and so far only game I got a platinum for and it is undoubtedly the most rewarding experience this gen.

I loved this game because of the BOSSES. Boss battles are pretty rare these days. I just hope in Demon's Souls 2, the levels are dynamic so they kick your ass even harder.

the game is just so rewarding, I spent 70 hours on my first playthrough alone. The whole game is the most original one this gen. The online has never been seen before either and the dificulty works for an all around good original RPG

What made the game great is that it did not hold your hand like most other games do. You are a weakling compared to the foes and you need to use your head if you want to survive. However the enemy would at time be restricted to some area due to pathfinding issues or game implementation that would make it less immersive. I mean enemies would at times be stuck next to you because they could not climb a step and all you had to do is sick back and snipe them.

The level design, difficulty and innovative online play made it great to me. The fact that it was hard encouraged players to bring others into their game, and raised the stakes of staying alive. The levels were deep... I never saw everything, and still want to go back for more. Great game.

Was a good RPG, but very lifeless, i prefer ones with cities, many NPCs etc

That is why FF13 was mediocre for me too

Lots and lots of weapons.

Counted over 90 particular ones (add in leveling up and variations and the number becomes hundreds)

Good words to describe it. I'm not big on ps3 exclusives, but this was one I had been interested in and I was left disappointed.

Demons Souls is the best RPG of this generation easily. It's lengthy, difficult, has a good soundtrack, cool graphics, sick gameplay, and the all around package is well worth the $$$.

The level design, sense of scale, atmosphere, character progression, gameplay, Co-Op, PVP

all done to such a skillful degree, it's hard to really not like the game.

No offense but I'm not sure if the opinions of someone who hasn't even finished a sub-level in Demon's Souls is worth much, and comparing it to a roguelike is totally off.

That being said. While Demon's Souls was a great game, I think its strongest point is actually the weakest: replayability. Everything remains completely the same in the subsequent playthroughs after the first and beyond more grinding/farming and PVP there's not much more to look foward to.

I wasn't really comparing it to rogue likes if you read my post.I was directing towards more dungeon crawlers actually. As I told KP, I can think of the game how ever I want. Like I said in my post "in my opinion"I know others won't agree and I couldn't care less what you think of my opinion. Just like you felt towards my opinion yours doesn't equal **** to either.

everything about demon's souls is awesome. what i like best is the combat. it is an absolute blast to cut through demons. i love a challenge and demons souls definitely delivers in that department. one of the best aspects about the game is the online. whether playing co-op or invading someone else's game, it is a very smooth and easy process and it adds so much to the game. i have spent hours upon hours just invading games. demons souls is the best game i have played this gen and i sure hope they make a sequel

Best game ever, in my opinion. Most of the reasons have been covered, but one I like to draw attention to is replayability. The second playthrough feels just as fresh as the first. At the end of the first you're left with a ton of stuff undone, and the result is that you immediately wanna start up a new game, get that new weapon, get that new spell, or get those upgrades that are going to turn your character into an unstoppable machine. Of course becoming an unstoppable machine is hard since the game is intended to be challenging and there comes a certain point when many enemies can kill you in one hit if your shield isn't up, everything eventually becomes second nature to you and you feel like you're really in the midst of intense combat. Also possibly the most immersive game I've ever played, the atmosphere was outstanding and when things got rough, your pulse shot up and you would freak out as if you were fighting for your life.

There's a somewhat steep learning curve, so it may turn some off it, but those willing to put time into it should find a great game.

Meh, as long as it goes on the record that you really didn't spend any time to give it any chance to begin with.

Have you even finished a sub-level? I'd suggest either trying it again or staying quiet about criticizing the game unless you have. I was enjoying the game at first, but I didn't even think it was the best game I got for Christmas last year. I beat the first level after a loooong experience learning the ropes (especially since I picked Magician, supposedly one of the hardest starting classes), then took time off the game for about a month and a half. When I picked it back up I struggled to learn it again, but once I got a grasp of it, it was all fun again. How great it really was dawned on me around the 6th sub-level I played (3-1, after 1-1, 2-1, 1-2. 2-2, 2-3). Everything was getting so deep, the upgrading system and the choices the Souls currency caused (choosing between a spell and an amazing new weapons can be hard) made the game all the more fun, and there was a whole immersive world surrounding it. Maybe it was lifeless, but that's sort of what it was meant to be, a huge, dark world, covered in dangerous demons, and you the loner, no more powerful than many of your enemies, only smarter, trying to take down everything, destroy the most powerful demons in the world against all odds. As I've said, best game I've played this gen, and also my favorite game ever.
