I think that number is total overall for development AND advertising, though I believe there is still additional money being set aside for the game beyond $500 million.

It is old and they have already confirmed that its budget is NOT 500 million . In fact , that's amount of money that will be spent on the game for next ten years (initial development , marketing , DLCs , Expansions , Servers , Customer Support etc)

This game kind of reminds me of Brink. Not sure if it will do good.

500M is for the whole 10y franchise and at least half of it is for marketing. A 500M game wouldn't look like a 360 game either.

That was debunked a long time ago,the devs said it´s not even close to 500M.

I don't believe its 500M. Either way, I think the hype train is speeding too fast for it. Its probably going to crash hard.

This was shot down by Pete Parsons at Bungie in July. Naturally, he only spoke of the development budget. Still, does your post quote an actual source? It seems to stipulate the $500 million, but there seems to be no direct quote.

yes they did say that they plan to support the game for 10 years and that the money was also for its advertising and future development (DLC, Expansion packs, fixing shit, supporting them selves untill the revenue starts to come in.)
