Destructoid: 3DS is System of the Year

Slowly but surely, the 3DS has become a gaming nirvana. It has a steady selection of RPGs, platformers, action games, and even shoot 'em ups, among many other genres. You should definitely choose what you want come this holiday season, and pretty much any choice would be the right one -- but I would contend that the with the 3DS, you're choosing best one.

Clearly it is the system to beat at the moment in terms of games: 2013 has been absolutely incredible for the handheld, with a relentless stream of games, non stop, one after the other, from first and third parties, new and old IPs, across all genres imaginable. At this point, it is the system to beat on the market.

No matter what console you decide to buy next gen, a 3DS would be the perfect companion device due to the sheer depth of its library.

PS3 is the console to own this year but i agree 3DS has been impressive.

I would recommend a PS3 or 360 much more than a 3DS, unless you are looking for a mobile gaming machine or something for a child.

it has had a stellar year. a few frustrations like MH3 not having online (WHY CAPCOM !?!?) but its just been delivering over the year.

my only concern is can it continue? nintendo will shift focus to the wiiu for next year and western 3rd parties are not on board.

still i have a hell of a backlog...a break would be welcome :P.

looking at the release schedule for europe at least it looks like rune factory 4 will be coming sometime in spring. that will probably keep me happy for a fair chunk of time (i have never played a run factory game but did enjoy harvest moon on the GBA many moons ago). after that its a bit quiet. i imagine nintendo will host a nintendo direct early in 2014 though.

I'll give it a nod over the PS3 when I finish a few more 3DS games.

Well, so far, for next year, the US has Bravely Default, Professor Layton, Yoshi's New Island, Kirby Triple Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. 4 conclusively announced, with there being a strong potential for a Majora's Mask remake and a Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire remake.

Europe has the same lineup, but with Shin Megami Tensei 4 and Rune Factory substituting Bravely Default and Professor Layton (both of which get released this year).

In addition, there are possible pending localizations for games like Monster Hunter 4 and Dragon Quest 7.

I doubt it will be as great as this year was, but I think it should be able to continue the momentum.

It does have some draw to it. But i just don't play handheld games as much as I used to

It's seriously great, If I could get the Vita's OS with the 3DS' games, i'd probably die.

It had by far the best game line up this year.

Not surprised it has had the best game releases of the year by far. Unfortunately I've since sold mine because I can't seem to get into handhelds anymore.

Ps3 kicked its teeth in. Gtav, bioshock, last of us, xcom, god of war, tomb raider, battlefield, cod, ac4, devil may cry and more. 3ds would b e 2nd

It really is. I've gotten more 3ds games this year than any other system.

Any platform that releases the proper sequel to one of the top 3 games in gaming history gets insta nominated for platform of the year in my book.

Bet you don't even have a 3ds... those games are good, but not as good as Fire Emblem Awakening, Pokemon x & y, SMT IV, Animal Crossing New Leaf and A Link Between Worlds. Not to mention they're all multies that can be played on other systems while the 3DS heavy hitters are all exclusives.

Therefor 3DS wins easily.

I almost bought a 3DS this year, but the games are too expensive for me.

I wish the PS Vita would get more successful.... It's got a bad lineup, but the game prices seem to be much more fair (and there's PS+). If the Vita's library could be at least as good as the PSP's was.....

It just seems like every game worth having on the 3DS is between $30-$50.

Exclusives add more value to any system because you can't get them anywhere else. I'll never understand why some of you guys drool so much over inferior versions of console mulitplat games that are heavily over-rated. Seems like grasping...

What's so funny? His list included Bioshock... lol. I played it and it's nothing special at all, the magical atmosphere wasn't re-captured. GTA V was great but more of the same, and Tomb Raider is just a re-skinned Uncharted with boobs!
