Digital Foundry did a hands on verdict and impressions of both systems controllers and their final verdict is that both controllers are great and it basically comes down to preference rather than a clear ergonomical winner

9191

All in all, both Microsoft and Sony have clearly taken note of the shortfalls in their current-gen controllers and make amends without over-stepping the mark - inevitably arriving at a similar middle-point in ergonomic design. Microsoft is no stranger to the process of evolving its pad design with every generation, going from the mighty Duke on the original Xbox, to a minimised S version which formed a basis for the more streamlined 360 pad. The Xbox One continues that tradition of refinement with gentle tweaks across the board - plus the addition of rumble features which make a surprising difference - though the result is one that should be warmly familiar to existing Xbox fans.

Meanwhile, Sony's DualShock 4 shows a more radical departure from the Dual Shock form factor it's held onto for the last three generations. With the revelation that neither the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One offer compatibility for current-gen pads, it's just as well that these new controllers bring enough incremental tweaks to every facet of their designs, each adding up to a broader sense of overall improvement than we'd expected going in. Certainly, controller comfort will always be a strict matter of personal taste, but between the two, the balance between conservation and evolution has been judged with care

Probably reaching the pinnacle of what they can achieve with gamepads at the moment. Can't wait to get my hands on both this November.

I think they both look great.

Both the 360 controller and the DS3 had their pros and cons. Neither were perfect.

The triggers of the 360 with the face buttons of the DS3, analogs of the 360 but in the same position as the DS3s, etc.

I am looking forward to the new DS4. I hated the fact that the PS controllers have been mainly unchanged all these years. They never felt right to me. This is a huge plus for me.

Yeah, there's only so far you can push things.

I am more interested in the DS4 controller because it's so different to what Sony did before and it might actually be nice. I sort of know what to expect with the Xbone controller already, though I imagine it will be awesome to hold

I'll go for the DS4 seeing as its made for people with normal sized hands. Microsoft refuse to fix the stick placement on their controller too.

I was a big fan of the 360 controller for a while cos it was my gamepad for PC and I didn't touch a dualshock in like 2 years. but now that I got a PS3 again and played with the DS3 I really like it. I don't know if I like the stick placement still but the sticks themselves feel really nice to move and the buttons overall (minus triggers) feel much better

I never understood how people said it didn't fit right in their hands. You'd have to hold it in a jacked up way for it to feel uncomfortable.

It's an American console what do you expect. The stick position is absolutely fine.

That integration for the 360 controller to PC is so damn money. It's allowed me to play so many PC games comfortably

Same, I couldn't imagine playing something like Assassin's Creed on a keyboard and mouse anymore. I mean it works fine but it doesn't feel very good

Its not all about preference. The xbox controllers d pad is easier to reach with right thumb while using the left stick. So if your running forward in Elder Scrolls for instance you can more easliy change weapons without having to stop. The Xbox design is superior. I hate to say this because I'm more of a Sony fan but facts are facts.

I actually watched quite a number of hands on demo of both controllers and what amazed me was how those CallOfDuty Youtubers were saying they prefered the DS4, these are guys who predominantly play COD on 360 so there is definately a change.

I think DF is right, both are now at a point they have addressed their respective flaws, the Xbox now doesnt have a protruding battery pack that sometimes caused finger numbness for some people and it now features a nice D-pad with it and some hands on testers said the impulse triggers actually is a decent feature. The Dualshock has those augmented reality feature that works with the camera, the touchpad thats actually clickable like an apple MacBook touchpad and it now feels more like a 360 controller in terms of hand comforming. I suspect the only difference people would complain about is the stick placement

I've been wanting a touch pad on a controller since before Nintendo unvieled the Wii (I was hoping that was part of what made the controller great but sadly no) so Im leaning PS4, I do like the look of both but Sony seem to have more potential this time.

More excited to play around with the DS4 because of its change in ergonomics, triggers, touchpad, and shoulder buttons.

X1 looks to be more of a good thing.

Hard to decide. The DS4 gamepad looks more useful on a PC (because of the track pad), it looks much comfier than the 16+ year old design that preceded it; however, the X1 gamepad still looks comfier to me.

Not sure, I kind of prefer the 360 controller, but it is just a toss up. However one thing I am not sure about is the Dualshock4 track pad, never been a fan of track pads like that.

Can't wait to get my hands on the Dualshock 4. Xbox One controller looks like a nice improvement, but I'm much more eager to use the new Dualshock.
