Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime brought up Diablo for consoles at DICE late yesterday

"I think you could make an argument that a game like Diablo might play very well on a console," the executive noted while discussing Blizzard's preference for PCs due to flexibility. "It's something that we're actually doing an investigation into to see if that could make sense."

He concluded that there are a "number of issues" that Blizzard would have to solve in order to bring its games over to consoles, with some of his concerns involving the ability to patch effectively and inevitably add expansions.
Asked directly if he thought Diablo would be the Blizzard game that could most easily be ported for consoles, he nodded in the affirmative.

As long as it's made from PC then ported to console I wouldn't mind one bit.

I've had the feeling for the last 12 months or so that D3 coming to consoles is almost a forgone conclusion :o hope I'm right. :P

He said it may happen but they would never let a console verison get in the way of the PC version.

Little do many people know, both Starcraft and Diablo made their ways to consoles. However they don't play anywhere close to their PC counterparts due to the controls.

"I think you could make an argument that a game like Diablo might play very well on a console,"

No it definitely wouldn't play well on consoles, unless they had Keyboard and Mouse support. Its just one of those games where it only should be played on PC. Like Dragon Age, it just really didn't fit well on consoles at all. It's not like shooters, where even though the PC is absolutely better for FPS, they still work very well on consoles.

Edit: With that being said, I wouldn't care if it did go to consoles. Just as pretty much everyone has said as long as the PC version was made first and not hindered in any way.

Theyve been saying such things for years...it would be stupid of them not to atleast look into console development.

For a spin-off fine, but not a main game. Remember Diablo on the PS1? Yeah, thought so.

Obviously Diablo 3 is viable on consoles. But Blizzard won't give up control of their Battle.net servers. So if Diablo 3 comes on consoles it may only be single player or a really gimped multi player.

I don't mind if its multiplat either way, but I wouldn't play it on anything but a PC. If it wasn't for the crappy ram limitations of current gen console we may have seen WoW on them by now.

Never played console starcraft, but I had Diablo for both PC and PS, though the PC version was superior and generally quicker, compared to the rest of the console library the game was great. Comparable to Dragon Age now I guess, I see no reason why a 360/ps3 Diablo 3 wouldn't be great too.

they better not be sellouts and do this

i fail to see how its fair that Microsoft and Sony have a nice monopoly going with them buying out exclusives left right and center

and PC cant even have one exclusive?

This exactly. I played Diablo on a PSone and Starcraft on a N64 back in the 90's, but it was nowhere near the experience the PC versions gave me.

Companies need money to thrive and provide better and better games, so that "sell out" will only benefit games and Blizzard

PC may have lost Withcer 2 and Diablo 3, but still has Heroes 6 i cant wait to play

Why does it matter? Some people play Diablo games as long or longer than some consoles entire generation worth of exclusives. Just look at how many people are still playing Diablo II. As long as they develop for PC first and then port it to console it's all good.

I'd say Blizzard's developer knowledge, and knowledge of their IPs is greater than your fanboyism on an issue like this. I'll take their word for it. I'll get Diablo 3 on PC obviously though, but it could very easily work on consoles. It's not like Diablo is the most complex game, and mentioning Dragon Age certainly didn't help as it's far more complex and it even worked very well(his words exactly) on consoles.

I'm pretty sure they do this with every game. They test it out on a console dev kit and mess around with it a little, if they see potential in it turning out accaptable then they'll make it. Or they could be talking about a spin-off.

I'll believe ir for their first major game they release on consoles, but i won't believe it for their second major game on consoles after Diablo 3 on 360/PS3 sell 5 times what it does on the PC. Unfortunately I think Blizzard will go where the money is at and if the money is on consoles, they will go there.

So the reporter asks a loaded question and he gives an answer that is perfectly legitimate and that is CONFIRMATION?

Are you kidding?

He was asked if he thought it would be the easiest among Blizzard's titles to bring to the consoles. He replied "Yes." Well NO **** it is the easiest. Look at their other games!!!

World of Warcraft couldn't possibly ever work on the consoles. The UI cannot be implemented for use on anything besides a M+KB. The only way to get it to work would be to do a complete redesign of it and it wouldn't even be the same game at that point...

Starcraft 2 is an RTS. Enough said.

Warcraft is also an RTS. Enough said.

So that leaves Diablo. An isometric RPG that has been proven to be possible -- though not all that well -- on the consoles. Of course it is the easiest of Blizzard titles to bring to consoles. That doesn't mean that they are going to...

All of the other stuff he mentioned(about them working on seeing if a console version could work) is stuff that happens universally at EVERY company with EVERY game. Every company sits down and looks at their games to see if they could work on other platforms. I guarantee that Blizzard at some point did some investigating whether or not they could port Starcraft 2. World of Warcraft certainly had some investigation at some point....

There is no confirmation. The answer that he gave was in no way a confirmation or a denial of anything. It was a non-answer to a non-question.

Can we please stop with this nonsense already?

oh my god. I was literally joking about this a few weeks back. there was a topic about witcher 2 coming to consoles and I literally said

"if diablo 3 also comes to consoles, I am going to die laughing."

and, sure enough, thats what happening.

it looks like the PC has (possibly) lost two of its biggest exclusives of the year. ouch.

I will never understand why people make such a big deal out of loss of exclusivity. As a gamer, if I can play game Y on platform X, I'm happy with platform X and really don't give a rat's arse about whether or not it appears on platform Z or not. Other than the die-hard fanboys who consider their platform of choice's success as a key component to the relief of their existential angst, this wouldn't be "ouch" for anyone. I'll be buying it on the PC whether it hits consoles or not.

Can we please stop with this nonsense already?

alfredooo

i think you missed the "?" at the end of the topic title.

No. It isn't even worthy of bringing up the possibility that this is a confirmation, because it isn't even remotely a confirmation of anything. As I said in my post, he gave a non-answer to a non-question. Why should we sit here and discuss this like it means ANYTHING along the lines of a confirmation?

Also, there are other people in this thread who are taking it as a confirmation.

Not to mention that this is no different from the comments he made 2 years ago when Diablo 3 was announced... There is literally not a single iota of information here worth discussing that hasn't already been discussed 2 years ago...

Actually, from what I've seen, a lot of the comments by Blizzard demonstrates their woeful ignorance of the higher echelons of Diablo 2.

I've just seen a lot of arrogant elitists who think they know the game better than Blizzard and want to make all the decisions for the sequel. Most fans seem to be just fine though.

Example? Blizzard wants to make gold worth something; old fans come in saying Diablo 2 had it right with runes, SoJ's, etc. Dev counters by saying the only reason the market for that was possible was due to duping; arrogant fan ignores and proceeds to bash the developer and gets banned. Either that or it goes on and on until the developer is fed up.

The developers know their game well. The success isn't a fluke when it is replicated so many times. The fans often just feel they have ownership over a property due to their fanatacism.

I still maintain that it would be a horrible game on consoles. At least compared to the PC version. I just got back into Diablo 2, playing Median XL and there is no way something like that could ever work on a console. They would either have to dumb down all versions for less skills and such or just gimp the console version. You cant say that they wont make some sort of compromise in the game if they wanted it on console.
