Diablo fans have been itching for news all throughout BlizzCon, and though we haven't gotten a release date yet, here's a few other juicy morsels for you.

Lead designer Jay WilsontoldG4 that there will be a closed beta for Diablo III. It will most likely be a Blizzard friends and family type of thing at first, but the public will most likely get a crack at the beta soon after. With talks of a beta here's hoping a release date announcement will be coming soon enough.

Wilson also said that Diablo III will not support mods, so whatever it is you were thinking about creating won't officially be supported.

Source:http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/10/23/diablo-iii-beta-confirmed.aspx

The game will be epic anyway.

wait, isn't Diablo III an MMO or am I mistaken?

cause if it's an MMO, then this makes perfect sense.

well thats unfortunate, one of the things that made the online for diablo 2 so great was some of the crazy armor and spell mods that people came up with, ahh white and black armor, good times :P

Diablo 2 didnt support mods either. This isnt really surprsing. Im assuming the question was specifically about interface mods through LUA scripting.

You just answered your own question. "What?" Stuff like "Median". Though I'm hoping it'll be more active, maybe even as active as it is with WoW. The stuff those guys do without even modding the client is amazing. And with its crazy cool. I would love to see that level with Diablo.

How is it obvious because of that? StarCraft 2 has one of the best editors for creating mods around, they made this decision to meet their design goal. That is all.

Understandable. I don't see a whole lot of room for mods with an action RPG of this style.

I knew there was a reason I stopped supporting Blizzard. Now it has just been sealed. They have been overtaken by Activision. They are clearly in this for the money now, and not for the gamers. If WoW was any indication already.

I see, good ol' copy/paste talking point #582 "Blizzard is no longer my best friend and is now banging my wife". Always nice to reach out and grab these talking points when a company is doing what some would consider "The Devil's Work".

Still wondering how not supporting mods is a move for money in a franchise never known for its mod scene. It's like complaining that Nintendo announced there will be no stage builder for the new Super Mario Brothers game, despite it never being an advertised feature. Oh, and lol @ the WoW thing.

That's one hell of an assumption to think an action RPG would contain a map editor like an RTS. Also wouldn't make sense to release one game where the selling point is user generated content and undermine it with another game with the same selling point less than a year later.

I see that you're taking the stance that this isn't an issue at all, and possibly better off for it. I, and many others, don't share that opinion though!

How can it be a "hell of an assumption" (seems you're implying that it's an uneducated line of thinking) when another upcoming game in the genre, Torchlight 2, will support it? Just because D1&2 didn't, doesn't mean D3 should follow the same fate. That was over 10 years ago! And when I say "similar tools", I don't mean they should copy and paste the map editor code that's tailor made for an RTS, like SC2.

I figured that such a feature could make it's way into a flagship PC title--PC being a platform that's heralded for mod support. It's not like Blizzard isn't capable of doing so either.

Also, I don't think including this feature would be counter-intuitive or undermine Star Craft 2's selling point, considering these are very different genres. You can't expect everyone that digs SC2 (RTS) to purchase D3 (action RPG). Though, I'm sure the many Blizzard fans will :P. I also believe that SC2 buyers made up their minds before they heard of its map editor.

You are spending too much time debating against several realities that you seem to not want to accept;

  • Diablo 3 is not Torchlight 2
  • Yes, a Diablo 3 map editor would undermine the recently released Starcraft 2 editor
  • Diablo as a franchise was never big on the mod scene
  • Blizzard RTS games were always the mod/user made content destination

The end. That's it. You admitted that you know nothing of how Blizzard handles their franchises, so whatever disappointment you have is from hyping in ignorance.

I think you're turning this into something it shouldn't be, and getting defensive. Of course Diablo 3 isn't Torchlight! I'm just saying that I think Diablo 3 can benefit from similar, free tools. I never admitted to not knowing how they handle their franchises, that was inferred on your end. Just because I never got into the Diablo franchise beforehand, doesn't mean I can't have any anticipation for certain features in Diablo 3 (mod support in this case).

This is very simple. You're fine with mod support not being included, and I'm a bit disappointed. Even though it won't support it, I'm looking forward to the game, like I previously mentioned.

In the end, this is what Blizzard wants. I'm not entirely happy with it. You seem to have a problem with me not being happy about it. That's all it is :).

Edit: You instigated this discussion (debate as you call it) from the outset. I'm glad you did though, as it's given me an opportunity to provide my two cents.

Again, its not about my being unhappy with the response or you being disappointed. It is basically the silly anticipation without any research done by those expressing any opinion on the matter. And of course, stating that I am being defensive is a nice way to divert attention away from very simple facts that have been a company's practice for years.

So yes, by all means be disappointed. I'm just stating that your reasons of disappointment doesn't make a lick of sense if you had any knowledge of both Blizzard or Diablo to begin with. Again, it is like being disappointed by the lack of a Create a Fighter feature in SSF4 due to Soul Calibur 3 having one.

Wait, time out. Before this, Diablo has had mods?Skittles_McGee

Yes. Both Diablo games had mods but since they weren't supported by Blizzard(just like Diablo 3) they where only for singleplayer.

There are mods, but Blizzard never gave an option for easy access like custom game options in their RTS games. How Diablo 3 is handled will be no different than 1 and 2.

Honestly, I just want Diablo III for the dungeon crawling. I was not expecting mods to be a major concern for the Diablo series. It sucks that those who would have wanted it didn't get it, but it doesn't automatically mean Diablo III is going to suck.
