Sorry if old.

Found this in Eurogamer.

DICE has told Eurogamer there is "no profit" made from forcing Battlefield: Bad Company 2 players to rent dedicated servers instead of building their own.

Producer Gordon Van Dyke said files the community needs to build dedicated servers are being withheld in order to "protect the game's integrity on PC".

"This does not earn DICE a profit," BFBC2 Van Dyke told us. "But we will see where the game goes and support it post launch."

Right now the only way to host a private dedicated server is by renting from one of DICE's authorised hosts. These, Van Dyke added, have already been picked in "all major regions of the world".

This is a first for the Battlefield series, as Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 both supported community members building and hosting their own dedicated servers.

DICE had made much of Battlefield: Bad Company 2's dedicated server support after Infinity Ward decided to go peer-to-peer with Modern Warfare 2 on PC.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 goes into PC beta testing later this month, starting 28th January and ending 25th February.

The full game's out on 5th March.

So what do you think??

why dont they just do both? have 2 lists in the game. 1 official list which lists only servers from approved providers (and have all the anti cheat stuff in there as mandetory) and an unoffical list which will list all privately built and maintained servers (using whatever hacks, cheats and mods that they like).

Don't understand why people are so pro-dice now considering they left PC gamers without Bad Company and 1943, and gave them a crappy, tf2-wanna-be called Heroes that plays with micro-transactions (also delaying Mirror's Edge with several months for the PC). Dice has a dark history against PC-gamers too, so I really don't understand why people are cheering for them now.

While Its true that BF2 and BF2142 allowed you to run your own server. As far as I know, in order to be properly ranked. Servers had to be rented. So the vast majority of BF players always played on rented servers anyway.

As they do on the vast majority of PC games as well. So really, nothing about this is really going to change anything for 99% of PC gamers.

Because while we were not given two games we were given BF, BF2, BF:Vietnam and BF:2142 something consoles gamers never got, we are also given BF3 exclusively...

Well, that will depends, region restrictions can be a problem... There a bloody lot of gamers that prefer joining user generated servers because of the lag with the official servers... and this has a lot to do to WHERE the server is connected physically

You dont seem to understanding what this article is talking about. User-Generated servers still exsist. Its just that now in order to run them, you have to rent one from an official provider. Meaning that you can no longer physiclly run the server from your house. This isnt new, the vast majority of players play on rented servers in any game (especially the battlefield series, where only official servers can be ranked). This isnt going to really effect anybody unless they plan on running their own server.

I also heard most BF2 players played on rented dedicated servers because only those were ranked. I never played in unranked games, so I myself added to that statistic. So if most players only play ranked games then this really isn't much of a story. But people will still go "whine whine whine, stomp stomp stomp" even though they themselves would likely never have played on an unranked server. I wonder if piracy has anything to do with the decision.

It doesnt only apply to BF2 (and your right as far as I know) it applies to the majority of major PC games. Rented servers are just better then home ones.

1943 is still coming out, I think with more features, Mirrors Edge was delayed to implement some amazing physics, Heroes is not a TF2 wanna be, and you don't need to pay a cent to enjoy the game. Doesn't really sound like they are betraying PC gamers at all so I don't get this dark history you speak of.

You didn't read me well Lets say you live in Singapore, you want to run a dedicated server so your buddy's/clan can play LAG-FREE, you'll need a server that's somewhat around your area, its EA willingly to offer "authorized" servers ALL AROUND THE GLOBE, I doubt it.

You still dont understand. EA isnt offering any servers. You rent servers from a third-party provider, not the developer or publisher. And yes, they will offer servers world wide, as they have for decades now.

This system isnt new to PC gaming. Most games are like this, the only difference is that they also allow you to run a server from home, which Bad Company 2 does not. However as home run servers tend to be far worse anyway, this really isnt an issue unless you had some intrest in running a small server from your house.

i played using an ati card so no performance reducing physx for me its still one of the best looking games visually. Although we had to wait the pc version was defiantly the best it felt like a pc game best played using a mouse and keyboard.

Since all this does is make the hassle of maintaining a dedicated server easier, I'm all for it. What this is basically saying is that if you want a dedicated server for your clan, you get to choose from some certified hosts.

Atleast Dice is being honest about it. It is all about profit. They want to monopolize on the servers for BC2. Oh well, I'm not buying it now.

Now I'm a little confused. Will we still be able to purchase non-official chidef servers? It says "the only way" is through authorized hosts.

Well to be honest, its pretty reasonable. I mean they look at the past games where they had this yet they would never make as much profit as the COD series. Now they look at it and they dont see a reason to put money into a server while players get it for free when they know they arent going to sell or make much profit like MW2 which has a crap matchmaking system and still be able to sell over 4 million in 2 months.

Well if they are truly doing it by authorized hosts only, then I call shenanigans they aren't going to make a profit. Ten bucks says they are charging servers for being on the list.

uh...none of that made any sense at all. What Dice is doing, is not very different from what has been going on for years with PC games. PC gamers have always been able to rent their own servers. No developer has ever given them away for free, with the exception of the official servers that a game has for maybe a month until the commnity starts to create their own servers.

This is a big difference among PC online and console online, and is the reason PC games are able to support more players with less lag....its because we arent relient on developers for servers.

Its not like this is new for DICE. BF2 and BF2142 only allowed ranked servers, if you were renting the server from a provider.

Shame. Small communities could set up their own impromptu servers with their own content and rules, stunt servers, recording videos etc. and whatnot. Now you have to pay for it.

I guess they're afraid people would find ways to illegitimately turn their unranked servers ranked and mess up the leaderboards? Or how could this compromise the integrity exactly? Oh right, there's also piracy.

BC2 gets a free pass from me as it's kind of a practice round, but they'd better get their act together for BF3. Mod tools, servers, player count, everything.

I'd feel more comfortable with the decision if I knew for a fact that there was no kickback involved to EA. If I was a company that had dedicated servers for the game, could I simply call up EA, ask to be on the list, sign an agreement that I won't leak the information, and then start selling? If so, this decision doesn't irk me too much. But I'm still supsicious of how these providers are getting on the list. I guess we'll have to see how many providers there are. If it's one per region, then I say there's foul play. If I see many companies offering services in every region, I'll assume there's little to no shenanigans going on.

All these threads on BFBC2 are about one thing. THe game will be the best multiplayer game of 2010 and will rank up with the greats of all time, namely TF2. For those PC gamers who did not get onto the PS3 beta, well the game is mind blowingly fun. Right from the get go I noticed just how superior the game was.

That's the point, it has dedicated servers, but it also has a lot of the stuff that lead to the backlash againt MW2 (no mods, etc.) The backlash agaisnt MW2 was about how closed the multiplayer was, displayed by the lack of dedis.

no mod tools, small player count and now no public release of dedicated servers (which will severly cripple game's longetivity). If DICE aimed at taking advantage of how much outrage MW2 has caused..then they failed big time.

I can only hope this means DICE realizes the game won't have long life on PC and they don't care because BF3 is coming anyway and it doesn't need competition from it's consolized little brother

no mod tools, small player count and now no public release of dedicated servers (which will severly cripple game's longetivity). If DICE aimed at taking advantage of how much outrage MW2 has caused..then they failed big time.

I can only hope this means DICE realizes the game won't have long life on PC and they don't care because BF3 is coming anyway and it doesn't need competition from it's consolized little brother

That's what I always expected from this game. It's a sequel to a console Battlefield, so you know... Wasn't expecting BF3, was expecting a console port, and that's kind of what it is. It's designed for consoles first and then they're doing what they can to adapt it for the PC platform. If anything it has exceeded my expectations with the increased player count and whatnot.

I imagine most PC Battlefield fans feel similarly. But yeah, while it most definitely is much preferable to the IW way, this is hardly PC support worth bragging about. If this situation repeats itself when Battlefield 3 is released, then I will be upset.

true, but they also didn't promise they will come later, so I wouldn't hold my breath

Gordon Van Dyke pretty much confirmed that it won't happen ever. Around the 18:40 mark.
