Poll Did 3DS live up to its DS legacy? (20 votes)
Since rumors of its successor it's coming. Imo, it's not as good as the DS.

Umm... Its not done yet.. The DS had like 7 years on the market I believe... The 3DS is still selling like hotcakes.
No, not yet.
First party support, yes, it surpassed the DS, in fact.
Third party support, haha, no, not even close.
I love the 3DS but no, the library is nowhere near what the DS achieved. To be fair though, the DS was out for much longer.
With that being said, I don't think its successor will be announced at E3
Voted No. It's a great system, but it never reached DS levels. No Metroid, DB, Castlevania, and a bunch of other missing franchise.
3DS is not a sequel to the DS, really. The DS opened up new lanes, drew in casual gamers / new demographics and created new IPs. Touch screen gaming for the time was really intuitive.
Now, the 3DS simply rests on a design for a 2004 platform, ignoring the fact that portable markets have undergone huge transformations. 3DS caters to core Nintendo fans. There's no new lanes. No innovation. No new IP's.
But let me tell you, Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is fantastic.
no, but it's nothing wrong just because it doesn't, the DS was a phenomenal success if they can sell around 100 million units that's still pretty good, so far the last 3 years they've sold around 14 million a year, if they can average that another 4 years then they'll break 100 million, and that's pretty good
@lbjkurono23: You talk about it in the past tense. Its not even close of being finished.
This thread should be made near/after the 3DS lifespan is over. Not because there's some generic patent that means less than nothing.
**** no.
1) A library that's significantly weaker, smaller, and less innovative than the DS',
2) Weaker installments of past Nintendo franchises
3) Games that tried to bridge parts of the PSP and DS' strengths without being particularly good at either and suffered from the same single analog stick as the PSP/
If the 3DS' life is truncated as opposed to the DS' prosperous one, fine by me. Is it a shit system? No. Anyone with a passing interest of games can find something on it that they find interesting on the box cover. As for actual games? Nah.
What did I buy it for? Well it was $99 and it was a Nintendo handheld. Fucking sold. Oh wait, the games weren't good. Super Mario 3D Land was an awful blend of 2D and 3D Mario, and me coming off Galaxy wasn't good for it. Ocarina of Time? 1998 game that has problems that should have been dissected in 1998, but are intrusive or just plain wrong today. Pokemon X and Y? Bought three copies of this game day one. Played X. Easily my least favorite Pokemon game that's pretty much a $40 demo for Pokemon Z. Bring it on. I'm not fucking buying it (I probably will). New Super Mario Bros. 2? Cash-in. Even Nintendo apologists admit this.
Are there good games? Yeah. Shin Megami Tensei IV. Fire Emblem Awakening. Mario Kart 7. Again, not as good as past installments, highly overrated by Nintendo apologists, but still good games. They get the job done, but that's the problem - the DS fucking innovated with New Super Mario Bros., 999, The World Ends With You, etc. These games reached constant greatness.
The 3DS? The great games list is like six games.
1) Virtue's Last Reward
2) Link Between Worlds
3) Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon
4) Resident Evil Revelations (so far)
5) Rayman Origins (I liked the demo and beat it on two other systems)
6) Something... I'm drunk, I don't know.
That's it. Three years, six great games. Sure, that's pretty good if you're... no that's not good. Enough with the goddamn "ifs" and "buts." "Fire Emblem/Super Mario 3D Land/Ocarina of Time 3D/Mario Kart 7/Shin Megami Tensei/Pokemon X/Y/A/W/G/Y/U/ are good, but..."
Yeah, that's horseshit. I didn't buy a system to play concessions. And if there are concessions (I play on a Vita and consoles, I play with concessions 24/7) don't let me notice to the point it makes the game less fucking fun. The 3DS, so far, cannot deliver on the same amount of fun, the same amount of everlasting moments, and the same amount of great games as the DS, the PSP, or the Vita.
I waited until Fire Emblem Awakening to play a 3DS game I really enjoyed (though chronologically, Revelations came first; I just got into it). That's two fucking years. For two years, the 3DS was a disappointing dust collector and a way for me to transfer Pokemon more easily from my DS and two (good) Pokemon generations. That's it.
Other systems? My PSP had great games. My DS(s) sure had a fuckton. My 360 did too. So did my PS3 and Wii. My Vita? Within 30 minutes of getting my Vita, I found more fun in playing games on it than I found in two years on the 3DS. No system should have that dishonor, but that's the 3DS for me.
So did the 3DS live up to the DS' legacy so far?
A) No
B) **** no
C) Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck no
D) Hahahahahah no
E) The DS? LOL NO
...
X) NOPE
Y) Not even fucking close
Z) The Vita is simply better. I like video games, which the Vita has better ones of.
I don't think it's lived up to the legacy of the DS just yet, but I know I much prefer the 3DS to the DS.
With that being said, I don't think its successor will be announced at E3
I agree, but I suppose we'll see what happens.
@Blabadon: Yeahhhh...Actual games are awesome. I wonder why the Vita is a complete commercial failure.( Maybe if Sony tried.. Kind of makes me wonder they even made it tbh) If it wasn't, maybe it would actually sell units :P
@Blabadon: maybe you wouldn't be playing with concessions if you werent such a cynical lil' shit who's unable to find joy in life
First Party, my god yes.
-The DS didn't even have a proper and original 3D Mario or Zelda game and the 3DS spawned masterpieces in those respects.
-3DS revived Kid Icarus and Luigi's Mansion in a big way and to a much, much lesser extent...Chibi Robo.
-Superior Fire Emblem on 3DS tenfold. The DS iteration was atrocious.
-Animal Crossing, and Pokemon remain to be superior on the handheld
-Paper Mario makes its debut on the 3DS...exciting thought but turned out to be underwhelming.Still decent though.
-portable sport games make a return after skipping the DS. Tennis sucked but Golf looks promising that is true to the original GBC and GBA iterations.
-portable Smash Bros on 3DS...no explanation required.
The only thing DS had over 3DS was the Metroid game and the superior Mario Bros game. I could be missing something else.
As for 3rd party..wow the DS excelled in that. The list goes on but the 3DS has its fair share so far: Resident Evil, Layton, Ace Attorney, SMT, Monster Hunter, popular fighting games (rare in DS library), Virtue's Last Reward and Bravely Default. And with the emergence of great indie games on the Eshop, 3DS could be on the road to greatness just like the DS. It still has a few years ahead of it so we'll see.
It's not even done yet, but honestly I don't think it will "live" up to the DS legacy.
Its first party is good, it might be even better than DS when all is said and done, but its third party is seriously lacking imo. DS had third parties up the ass... while the 3DS has barely any that I give a damn about.
When I look at my shelf of games in my room, like around 80 percent of the 3DS ones are first party. Compare this to the DS which is probably around like 30-40.
