Did any other console dev ever go from Frist to Last Place like Sony?

I'm trying to think if this was the biggest fall in history. I was thinking Nintendo with the N64, but they went from first with SNES to 2nd with N64, I guess the GC was eventually third but that took 2 generations for Nintendo to fall that low. Sony got the last place prize in just one generation. So has anyone ever fallen as pitifully far as Sony has in just one generation?

exactly point out where the hate was? I'm simply going by a fact that the Gamecube didn't sell hardware world wide or monthly as much as the ps2 or xbox, 3rd party support was small compared to the ps2 and xbox, and the systems games sold less I beleive then the other 2.

I liked the gamecube for its games particularly the resident evil rereleases and REmake....I loved it cause it lasted for like 7 years without a case lol.

It's because a lot of people don't "get" the magic of Nintendo.

It's very hard to if you're a seasoned gamer who has a particular viewpoint of what gaming "should" be like.

It's also very hard for people to conceptualize why a grown man shouldlike Nintendo.

After all, they are a company who aims the majority of their games at kids.

Second your trying to make it sound like Sony has done sooooo bad, when Xbox has only sold about 3 million consoles more, when it came to the market one year before selling like 6-8 million consoles before the PS3 was even in the shops?. How is 64ish million great the 'king' when 61ish is end of the world when its been on the market 12months less?

Well, Atari went from first (2600) to last (7800) and eventually failed quite miserably (Jaguar) and dropped out, Sega was almost first (MD 1992) but burned themselves quite badly (32X, Saturn) and couldn't keep competing financially anymore (Dreamcast) and dropped out and Nintendo went from first (NES, SNES) to far-behind 2nd (N64) and last (GameCube). So yea, almost every successful console company was at it's low point at some time.

Funny thing is, ps3 would be in 2nd place if it came out at the same time as 360. Well, I hope you're talking about sales to begin with... ps3 is not 3rd place whatsoever in terms of quality.

Nintendo failed hard after the SNES(sales wise). Sega failed so bad they stopped making consoles. Atari Went from top of the ladder to the sewer with the 2600 and 7800. So the answer to your question is yes. Sony is actually doing pretty good considering the not masses friendly entry price and year hiatus. They did a good job turning a potential fail into a success. No it is not PS1 or PS2 success, but no one has ever been cream of the crop three generations in a row. Sony was fated to falter.

Note sure if ignorant or just trolling. If I made a console right now and sold one unit, I'd have put Sony, MS and Nintendo all in "Last Place" It has nothing to do with where you start, it's where you end.

Every house in that world has/had a Wii that is stored in the closet. Xbox 360 sold much more than PS3 no doubt. But I think just about every 360 owner has bought 3-5 consoles. So ummm shut with the PS3 fail threads. Coming from an owner of every system. Boom, roasted

You have no idea what you're talking about do you?

Clearly Nintendo was the top hardware and software game developer from the early 90s till Sony released the PS1 and then the PS2, they lost badly but still kept momentum, stayed releasing games...

LOL consoles used to be so good. It's just this gen that consoles are so terrabad that the only real option this gen was to go PC only. (I've played games on PC since 2000 but I also played consoles too. Not this gen though, consoles suck the big one this gen and deep down you know it.)

Don't try and diminish the huge triumph that is the 360 this generation. Only in its second outing, after getting pimp slapped last gen by the PS2, MS has created a console that appeals to just as many gamers as the PS3.

I dont buy that for a second. Microsoft got out of the gate first, had a very good early exclusive lineup, and has been treading water ever since. All this was made possible by Sony's $600 arrogance. If Sony had not entered this gen with a console nearly double the price of everyone else, Sony is the one sitting in second by a good margin.

You guys do realize this gen is not over yet. In fact, we are likely only half way into the PS3's lifetime. Just like PS2 over Xbox, I think PS3 will have a far longer lifetime than 360...more than enough time to make up the rest of that 360 first year head start they have been cutting into.

That's a bunch of "what if's." The reality of things is MS has done astoundingly considering its relatively new foray into consoles. Just because of a year head start doesn't mean that the 360 should have done as well as it did. It launched with some impressive titles at the time and continued strong, rivaling the PS3's launch in terms of games.

Since you said Sony and not PS3, you are dead wrong. Sony isn't in last. They released something called the PSP, which far outsold 360, and is 3rd in sales among gaming platforms this generation.

Neither had an ultra good launch year. The difference is, 360's second year lineup of Halo 3, Mass Effect, Forza, etc. was matching up against PS3's average launch lineup and $600 price tag. It's exactly why the lead got so big. Even if they launched at the same time, the PS3's price tag would have put it at a disadvantage and likely behind 360, just not as much. My point is, if PS3 launched at even $400, 360 would not have been able to get such a giant head start...even with the first year head start.

I love the GC, but the launch and game management was horrendous.

That being said, GC was a success in the fact it was profitable.

I don't think it's a big deal PS3 is in third place. It's not like the system has disappeared and has no good games supporting it.

It has some excellent games.

I wouldn't mind having one.

I'm trying to think if this was the biggest fall in history. I was thinking Nintendo with the N64, but they went from first with SNES to 2nd with N64, I guess the GC was eventually third but that took 2 generations for Nintendo to fall that low. Sony got the last place prize in just one generation. So has anyone ever fallen as pitifully far as Sony has in just one generation? groverslanding

True, Sony is the first, but only because the N64 was helped by the disaster that was the saturn. So two consoles fell that gen but one fell much harder than the N64 which saved it from being last place.

Then again, no other console has also ever gone from selling consoles at $299 to $599 either. So it is logical that such an extreme price hike would be met by an equally extreme customer backlash. I love Sony and the PS brand and even I felt kicked in the teeth when they announced that launch price for the PS3. And being Canadian, that meant for a bit it was$649 until our dollar went up.

Even though I love the PS3 and still think it is the best console for me, Sony was stupid for thinking they could launch at that price. Apparantly their desperation to win the HD-DVD/BR battle was so great that they were willing to sacrifice the PS3. Stupid move I think.

What's with all the Gamecube hate? That's like my second favorite console ever after the SNES. (Honorable mentions go out to the Dreamcast)

Console peasant

But you had fun tho right? It was fun times.

And still is for some people.

LOL consoles used to be so good. It's just this gen that consoles are so terrabad that the only real option this gen was to go PC only. (I've played games on PC since 2000 but I also played consoles too. Not this gen though, consoles suck the big one this gen and deep down you know it.)

I don't get that.

Why do you feel this way?

The console games still exist alongside the more "PC" style titles, except now they are derided as "trash for casuals."

10 years ago you WERE that casual, waving around the Nintendo gun playing Duck Hunt, having a blast.

Now using a sharpshooter is beneath you?

Only thing that changed was your mood.

Funny thing is, ps3 would be in 2nd place if it came out at the same time as 360. Well, I hope you're talking about sales to begin with... ps3 is not 3rd place whatsoever in terms of quality.sethman410
