Did anyone else not really like Fallout 3?

I knew it wasn't going to be like Fallout 1 and 2. I knew it was too much to ask for it to be even like Morrowind. I did think in terms of content though, it would be like Oblivion, but even in that way, it seemed to fall short.

Now let me explain. I loved the main storyline with the exception of the ending, I loved how the characters spoke and I loved a lot of the game mechanics. I just expected more side activities I guess, maybe some sort of factions or at the very least more options. I was able to enjoy the Fallout games for several play throughs, same with Morrowind, and same with Oblivion to a lesser degree, but when it came to Fallout 3... I really don't see myself playing through this more than twice. You can play through it once as a good guy and then once as a lunatic, there's really not much else than that though. Am I missing something?

Sure, I saw some side missions, but it was all just busy work really. There were no entertaining factions like I would expect from a Bethesda game, the exploration was good but at the same time I expected a bit more variety rather than just the occassional store to loot or building to poke my head in.

Where is all of the Fallout love coming from? Did I miss something huge while I played through this?

~I posted this over on a forum I didn't mean to post it on. So I'm just re-posting it here now.~

Doing a game like F1/2 can't be be done within any realistic deadline with todays requirements. so much voice acting, so much unique content.

I was perfectly happy with what I got considering the circumstances.

What about Oblivion? I would say that's along the same lines as Fallout 3 considering they're both a game from this gen. Fallout 3 doesn't even begin to match up to the factions and side activities that Oblivion had, even though Oblivion could have been improved a lot.

TBH Fallout 3 is the first WRPG that I could get into. I thought it was fantastic but I am essentially a noob to the genre and series.

I don't know if this will make sense but in my opinion Fallout 3 was boring but fun.

When I competed Fable 2 I actually exchanged it for Fallout 3 because it had so many quests to do.  But after enjoying Fallout 3 and  not really liking the endings, I'm going to exchange it back to Fable 2 because I feel that my siblings would have more fun with the coop when I let them borrow it.

Anyway, I have like two more Super Mutant Behemoths to look for and hunt down to unlock that Achievement.  I like using the Fatman and Missile Launcher for those.

Well, yeah!
It was too big. Just too big. I didn't feel like i was making any kind of progression at all. You know, kind of lost. Like i could go anywhere i wanted and that didn't make it interesting to do anything. There didn't seem to be that much to do either. Sure i could explore that cave entirely but i don't really have a reason to want to. Usually my explorations didn't get me anything that felt like it was 'worth it'. I haven't played much after reaching Rivet City because it looks so big. I'm not going to search through all that to find what i need to... to look further. It was just no fun.

Eh, the game just left a bad overall impression on me. Such a bland, empty world. Some people may like the Post Apocalyptic setting, but I prefer the full of life environments in the Elder Scrolls Games.

Oblivion had a huge world with loads of quests, but because of that it had rather generic personalities and quests. Having a modern game flesh out it's locations like the the old Fallouts (I'll mention Planescape: Torment for shameless promotion while I'm at it) Just is'nt a realistic endeavour.

I can certainly understand the comparison and I did find Oblivion enjoyable but the thing thing about Fallout is that pretty much all questgivers are unique. Hell, a lot of random npc's are.

That being said, I think that Bethesda pretty much did the best job possible with the expectations of a modern game in mind.

I loved Oblivion, I put months into that game, got addicted as hell too. As for Fallout, I loved the barren atmosphere, and the overall lonely feel of the game, but I found myself getting bored fast. If I had played Fallout before I played Oblivion, I might be saying the opposite, so it's hard to say.

Everything about Oblivion was Copy and Paste.

All the caves looked the same and everysingle dungeon was just the same with a slightly diffrent layout.

Exploring in that game was a waste. At at least in Fallout 3 its mixed up a bit and theirs alot of nice looking envioments.

To be honest, I played the game when I was tired and I fell asleep for a bit.  The last time I did that was when I was playing or watching MGS4.   I haven't played the first Fallout games so I can't really compare how Fallout 3 contrasted but I think it held it's on.  Oblivion is Fallout 3 with swords.

I never understood the complaints about Fallout 3 and it's "barren" setting.

What made the repetitive as hell environments of Oblivion any better? Brighter foilage? Pretty flowers? Clean, badly animated rivers? Bigass trees? The occasional awkwardly bounding deer that looked like it had an iron rod shoved in it's butt jumping past you?

Was it the bright sun and the cheeriness of it? It was just as barren in the sense of nothing to do, and a mere pretty setting to behold. There was no greater essence or setting to Oblivion. It was a big, empty forest, with the occasional copy paste look of an abandoned ruin or a "dungeon", and by "dungeon", I mean what was usually a wooden door stuck to a large boulder. You had a few little settlements here and there and some mountain ranges and the winter area, and they were indeed the best parts of the setting, but even then, what was truly different?

I don't see the difference. It was just as barren when you took a step back and looked at it. It was empty, hollow, and it was rather boring to explore, personally.

I can see the appeal, but it did not impress or wow me, especially when compared to the twisted landscapes of Morrowind, with giant mushrooms, humongous flying jellyfish, crashed airships, and the Dwemmer ruins(Which actually carried an interesting asthetic design).

I think it was a good game. But I also agree with the fact that you can play the game 1 or 2 times and be done with it, which is not a bad thing because you still get a lot of game play.

Its weird because I hated Oblivion but I liked Fallout 3. Also I am a big fan of the previous fallout games so maybe that makes my opinion on the game unobjective because I was going to like it no matter what lol.

What ticked me off is that it doesn't have the same atmosphere as the old games for some reason, maybe because of the change in developers. Nonetheless there were plenty of parts in the game I was like "awesome."  Lastly, when I play it now, I can understand why some people dont like it, but there will always be people like that with all games.

I haven't tried a game like that before, so I thought I may have liked it, but after finishing it and doing every quest possible I realized exactly what I didn't like about the game, and that was it's setting. Everything else was well done though.

There wasn't much motivation for me to explore many of the subway tunnels, caves, etc, because there really wasn't much of a reward.

I love Bethesda, and they created Oblivion, which was one of my favorite games ever.

I was very anxious about fallout 3. Was worried it would ruin the series (yes I was one of those), worried it was Oblivion with guns, worried that it would be too short.

Well I was wrong on all counts. Loving it very much!

As for those who think its too big and theres no direction, have you played many WRPG's before?

My only irritation (with no spoilers) is that some areas are a pain to get to.

fallout 3 was way better than oblivion and had way better quests. Sure some in oblivion were okay, but most in fallout 3 were great, and acually exciting. Morrowind ont he otherhand, wasn't very good at all. Oblivion was a huge improvement on Morrowind, and fallout 3 was an improvement on Oblivion, even though they really aren't all that similar.

I love Fallout 3. Best game I have played this gen.

But just last night I went through the most depressing chain of events. Basically I done alot of bad things in order to get a quest done, and then some more. It was horrible, I felt like a real douche. It dosn't feel good to be evil in this game, the results of bad karma actions within the game are so distinctly wrong that it can really crush you. Not even games like Fable that strongly focus on good and evil can make you feel this bad.

Anyway the game has a great selection of quests. Even though it lacks the progression systems from Oblivion, it makes up for it by making the quests actually fun, as opposed to the repititive messes they were in Oblivion. The game can be pretty hasrh with the player, which is something Oblivion was never very good at. Basically if you make a bad choice, it can have really terrible consequences, and the game is alot harder even on normal difficulty with challenging opponents like Super Mutants, and sentry bots. The various condtions and radiation sicknesses really add to the gameplay aswell. The map is huge, and really dense, and exploring is actually pretty fun. There's alot to see in the world, and it's unlikely you will ever see it all, but it is very impressive by anyones standards, with locations like the large walled town of Megaton, constructed from airplane parts, and even the White House. Much more variety than the bland world of Oblivion, with it's samey countryside landscape and unimpressive towns and cities (Save for the Imperial city). As a spiritual successor to Oblvion it is far superior.

I don't know how other people play but sneaking around some of the areas (inside or underground) can be downright nerve-wracking at times. When nothing shows up on your "radar" and you walk into something in the dark! Heh, I'm not ashamed to say I've jumped a few times!

Oblivion suffered from the same exact problem, lots of areas to explore with no rewards. Atleast with FO3 you have a reason to dig around in these places-you needed to look for supplies.

Not to mention you miss alot of the quests if you don't look around. Just the other day I ran into a random house and found myself in the middle of a quest. Not to mention the various free-form quests which are great. You really have to look around if you wan't to find things.

i just don't care. i'm playing starcraft, civilization 3, team fortress 2, puzzle quest, animal crossing, MGO, and Mario kart right now not to mention i'll get Age of Empires on DS soon

LBP is even having a hard time getting played, and its amazin

not too many great ones, but they'll come in time. most of them now just slow levelling or make subtle changes to the code as the full mod tools aren't out yet from what i understand.

Game is horribly overrated, like most games this generation.

Ai,Story,Graphics are all lackluster, exploration is fine, world is cluttered, characters are horribly dull and lack substance, morality is a joke etc. etc.

Bioshock was black and white but had a much greater emphasis on atmosphere.  Fallout 3 tried this formula and failed horribly.

Here's hoping fallout 4 will be more like the originals.

I've yet to really get into it. Technically most things about it should be to my liking, but I dunno, something in it just bores me, and with better games around I haven't felt like getting back to it.

Here's hoping fallout 4 will be more like the originals.

meh, absolutely disagree in every way possible. but to each their own eh :) bioshock was incredibly weak when compared to Fallout 3 imo.

After buying it for the PC, I was unimpressed. My initial reaction was meh. The game is just too boring for my taste. I tried for hours to get into it. I felt the same about Crysis. I say that because the sandbox environment was too open with little to do and hardly anyone in sight.

I just expected more side activities I guess, maybe some sort of factions or at the very least more options.

me too although im still finding plenty to do hoarding loot and levelling up. i had a flick through the prima guide in game and was shocked to see the tiny amount of listed side quests. thought i was just looking in the wrong places. still enjoying it lots though, definite goty contender for me.

[QUOTE="blaaah"][QUOTE="DVzomb"]There wasn't much motivation for me to explore many of the subway tunnels, caves, etc, because there really wasn't much of a reward.

I love Bethesda, and they created Oblivion, which was one of my favorite games ever.

True, I did not explore a number of the caves and dungeons in Oblivion because there were just so many, and they all looked like copies of one another. The game was fun to explore when running around Cyrodiil and seeing all of the colorful, interesting sights. There were many quests, and they were all given to you in an interesting fashion. One that specifically stands out in my mind was when I was roaming around Skingrad at night, and I had a wood elf named Glarthir turn me around and tell me to meet him behind the chapel at midnight. Not only was it creepy, but it was a mixture of interesting and exciting.

I haven't run into any of those situations in fallout 3, and i've finished the game.
