I bought the game when it came out and let me paint a picture for you, the online portion of the game didn't function at all, at least TMCC inconsistently functioned online, this didn't work one bit. The soundtrack is horrible, just a bunch of monotone bass and random trap/techno-esque music, the menu system is extremely bland, on top of this the game was delayed an entire year and released incomplete with no weather and no replay functionality, these things came out months and months later.
The control in game is very clunky and inconsistent feeling, like others have said you can do something one turn but the next you will tank into the wall, it doesn't feel natural and it doesn't feel like you're driving a car. Then we come to the tracks, they're extremely narrow and limited overall, and if you go off the road even a little bit your cars speed is unnaturally gimped, the screen starts flashing at your and you're hit with a speed penalty that inhibits you from accelerating. The AI reminds me of Gran Turismo of late, horrible, no awareness of you on the track, they just want to hold a line and they'll crash into you left and right regardless of you being there, it's like you don't exist.
There is forced online connectivity in this game if you want to enjoy certain vehicles, you have to be a part of a club and the club has to be at a certain level if you want to attain these vehicles, I don't even know where to begin with the stupidity behind this. I don't mind the fact that there is no customization in terms of tuning or parts either, however the fact that you have to earn paint jobs is just ridiculous, it's a tedious task and an annoyance not to mention the stylized paint designs for cars are just ugly and ruin the look of what the game is going for. In terms of content there is enough and more has been added over the months since release, but it's still just a soulless and hollow feeling game.
It's designed in the ideology of games like Need for Speed 2, however it doesn't have the charm and it doesn't execute really anything well. The graphics are really good when you look at a Youtube video, or gif's put on the forums, or photomode screen shots, however get this game running on your own actual TV and a lot of it breaks down. There is a huge amount of aliasing in the game and the jaggies that show up as a result are total eye sores, there is a lack of anisotropic filtering so textures get very muddy at distance, the reflections are quite poor when you stop to look at them, there are low resolution textures and undetailed environments masked by the speed of driving, the only things that actually look good in Driveclub are the weather effects, the lighting, and the car models themselves, everything else is very meh.
Now I have a lot of reasons to criticize this game because a lot of really negative reasons exist, however I still find enjoyment in playing it because it's different, it's very 90's even though it doesn't do that style of game any real justice. You can have fun in Driveclub but you have to really force yourself to play it to find those moments of fun and enjoyment. This game was harshly rated for a reason, it is very generic, it is very mediocre, but it's not a horrible game, it's just not a very good one.
