I actually didnt buy my PS2 until a year after it was released because back then I was only 15 when the PS2 launch and at that age $300.00 was all the money in the world. Anyway the point im getting it is people hating on the PS3. I actually bought the PS3 at launch, I actually own both a 360 and a PS3, now that im 22 and have a full time job and live on my own its a lot easier to afford these things now lol. But honestly I love my PS3 and Ive loved Sony ever since the PSone. So Im just wondering if the PS2 had a bad launch also and if everyone hated the PS2 when it first came out?! Infact what where some launch titles for the PS2?! Because if people where saying the same exact thing about the PS2 back in 1999 when it launched, well look at it now.. It speaks for itself.. a raging success, so will the PS3 be a raging success.

Lemmings will try to dodge this by saying 360 had better launch lineup(which it didn't), so it doesn't matter.

The only part of the PS2 launch that sucked were the games. It had a couple good ones, but nothing stellar. Still, it sold like wildfire. It was also half the price and had a DVD player which was cool since DVD was already pretty established, just pricey.

Yes it did. Although, I was unfortunate enough to end up with a $500 CAD GT3 pack-in DRE brick. Good thing I got it to partially work again.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. I actually regretted buying my Japanese PS2 at the time. All it had was Tekken Tag, and I don't really like Tekken.

If the US launch was bad, just imagine the Japanese one. It took quite a while for the PS2 to start getting good games.

I did not own a PS2 game for quite a while. I think my first game was SSX though. I never had a PS1, so I played FFIX and Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. I remember there being nothing on PS2 for a long time.

yes the PS2 launch was bad, but that's not the main issue, the main issue are the games coming later on, the reason the PS2 was a success was because of GTA 3, and later Vice City, both were exclusive for a long time and they sold millions of PS2's. There is no exclusive GTA this time around for the PS3 so it will have to rely on MGS, and Final Fantasy, maybe DMC4. No doubt the PS3 will start to pick up in sales, but unless there is another GTA like exclusive game, I don't see it winning this time around.

If $300 was all the money in the world to you back then how do you think $600 looks to kids/teens now. just a thought. and it didnt really start to sell until the price dropped to around $200

I got my PS2 on launch ( pre-order from kbtoys online ftw! ) granted I didn't have the cash back then for a game too I still had fun watching DVD's and playing old PS games with the texture mapping, and disk speed "upgrades". I honestly loved my PS2 even though a lot of the press didn't, I really didn't care. But now I am older and I know that $600 is too much just to play Blu-Rays and Resistance alone. Lol I remember when I first pre-ordered it and I brought the printout to school showed my friends and daydreamed in class when it was supposed to be out... oh but that was so many years ago.

It had a good launch. SSX scored 9.4 and Tekken Tag scored 9.6, so it had two exclusive AAA titles right from the start. It also sold well and was in high demand for a long period of time.

Are ya fricking kidding me??  Most people flat out refused to buy Sega dreamcast for like the last 9 months of that systems cycle because they were so excited and believed the Sony hype.

So no, you can't say, oh look everyone hated PS2 back then.  Nobody hated Sony, everyone wanted a PS2.  If anything Sony picked up extra sales in the beginning solely off brand name and hype.  Sure they had some crappy launch titles, but at the time even crappy PS2 titles looked good compared to PS1 and N64 titles (which most people owned) .  Most people ignored the DC alltogether in the hype for PS2.

So, no it is not the same situation..  If anything right now , 360 is playing the role of the PS2 and PS3 is playing the role or original Xbox.  Take that as you want.

In the US, the PS3 is selling at about the same exact rate as the PS2 did. In Japan, the PS3 is selling 1/3 the amount that the PS2 did in the same time frame. At launch the PS2 sold 700k in Japan. At launch the PS3 sold 80k in Japan. :(

I wanted a PS2 bad when it launched, but I didn't get one till 3 months later. I got it because I never owned a PS1, and I had bought Symphony of the Night a few months before. So I played that till I got Summoner, my first PS2 game, which now that I look back on it, was abyssmal compared to what came out later. I think the Oldest PS2 game I actually own now is DMC.

The cows had stopped this month ago, but are reverting back, so to keep the record clean, this is why the PS3 is NOT the PS2

Competiton

When The PS2 launched, the only competiton was the Dreamcast, and while a good system, didn't have a big enough fanbase when the PS2 launched. Sega Was ailing, and simply didn't have the cash to have agressive pricing, or massive Ad campaigns. PS2 was the sole next gen starting 2000, and the dreamcast died 2001. The Xbox and GC didn't come out for 1-2 years later.

When The PS3 launched, The competiton was from Microsoft, who is loaded, and doesn't seem to mind they don't turn a profit on the Xbox360. they have around 8 million Xbox360s out, with tons of games in the pipelines, and  a huge live Fanbase, around 50% of owners subscribe to live. The 360 also had the benefitt of a one year headstart so they began with 2nd and 3rd generation games vs. 1st gen. Also, the Wii, which was 1/3 of the price, launched at the same time, and for lack of a better term.PWN'ed the PS3, selling 2million in the holiday season.

Pricing and economics

When The PS2 launched, the Economy was strong, energy cost were lower, retail goods in general were doing fine. The Bush Administration hadn't begun, and there was no war yet. the price 250 was lucrative, and people had money to spend.

When The PS3 launched, the economy was not so good, People were more worried about gas and heat than Blu-ray, airlines are failing, american cars aren't selling, and the housing market is falling. Taxes are higher on the middle class, and the price is huge, $600. Sure, Joe could get a PS2 when he had been making 50,000 in 2000, but the problem is inflation is operating, making things more expensive, roughly 17%, so everything around Joe costs more, but he isn't making any more than 50,000 a year, so he just can't afford a 600 machine for technology that has 50/50 chance of floping.

Specifications

The PS2 was the weakest system of the bunch, a wii , in terms of hardware, when compared to an Xbox or gamecube. IT integrated new DVD technology, which had no competitors, and was a clear evolution from VHS and Betamax as a new format. DVD was un-matched in terms of clarity, that was clearly Visble on a standard TV

The PS3 was the "supposed" strongest interms of hardware, with tons of buzz words, like the Cell and RSX. The Blu-ray is not clearly a winner like DVD, with HD-DVD competing at half the price, and you need an HD-TV of some form to notice an advantage over DVD. Also, the blu-ray is terribly slow interms of games.

Games

PS2 had huge series and hits, like GTA3, VC, SA; Gituar hero, and super mokey ball to name a few.

PS3 has resistance and MGS$, but many formerly exclusive games are coming out simoltanously for the 360, or 360 exclusive.

What the PS2 had that the Dreamcast didn't = Madden Football. This was seriously a reason of bunch of my buddies bought a PS2. We had to get that Madden.

Yes, but then again Wii and 360 flopped just as hard. Lemmings like to think PDZ was an amazing game, but it wasn't.

The PS2 had a much better launch line up than the PS3, it also sold better than the PS3 is currently selling.

For most of the games people wanted to play to get out. It took about 18-22months for them to get out after the PS2 first launch. Right in time for the Cube NA launch and the Xbox launch

YES! You are so right..I know a lot of Madden fanboys and they all bought PS2s because of it..In fact lack of EA support is one of the things that killed the Dreamcast......
