So I keep hearing how the PS3 will have a 10 year life span like the previous playstation consoles. Im just trying to remember. What year did they take PSone off the shelves, was it 2004? Because PSone launched in 1994 and I believe they took it off shelves in 2004 therefore it would have 10 year life span. And the PS2 was launched in 1999 right? So the PS2 has to go on for 2 more years until it officially had a 10 year life span. Im not trying to bash because i am a sony fan, just trying to determine if the PSone and the PS2 really did last 10 years or is it more like 8 years?

PS2 has only been out for 7 years but it looks like i will last for a few more...

and ps1 lasted for almost exactly 10 years.

And ps3 is almost guarunteed to last 10+ years becuase it is more prepared for the long term than either ps1 or ps2...

Yeah, the PS1 did have some games released well after it's lifespan. Not that sports games really count for much, but it means something.

PS1 still sold for 10 years, even when no games were coming out for it.

Yes, the PSONe did, and it seems the PS2 will last even longer.

Poor N64 owners got their system in X-mas 1996, and support was nil by March 1999. Kinda like Xbox (X-mas 2001- March 2005).

The Saturn got burned the worst (May 1995 - early 1997)

fair enough.

Still though sony will support ps3 so that it lasts for 10+ years regardless. It's part of thier overall plan. They have said this many times.

I think that the PS3 will last 10 years.

I think the Wii will last 5 years

And I think the 360 will last 7 years

And I think I will be happy with all 3!

To a certain degree PS1 lasted somewhat more than 10 years since it supposedly launched on 1994 (japan) and 1995 (NA). And production of it ended on 2006 and it's last game was not so long ago (2005).

Ya, but you gotta think, thats counting from the very first release (japan) to the last major productions (i'm fairly sure in some smaller countries you can still buy new, in the box ps1's) ... but thats just what i've heard... plus what tekkenmaster posted.

The PS2 will last 11 years. It's 7 already and still has some life in it.

The PS3 will last anywhere from 8 years to 14. Yes, 14, if blu-ray becomes popular.

The Wii will last 3 years before people get bored.

The X360 will get axed by MS in 3 more years, for a total of 4. But you can expect your 360 unit to die much much earlier than that. And your second one. And your third...

I actually really like this about Sony.  Instead of crapping on their elder system every 5 years like Nintendo and MS, Sony supports their consoles over a longer period of time and creates a smoother transition between generations.

no the ps1 did not last 10 years sony kept customer support, and unit production up to milk out every last dime from the system cause in reality all dev support was gone from ps1 after 6-7 years except for obligitory sports titles that sucked and were dev'd by 3rd-4th tier teams....the same is happening with ps2, and the only reason sony is able to do this is because of sheer numbers of units out there thats the only reason...if sony had only sold 50m-60m we wouldn't see this practice going on for as long...

While I agree with your statement about Sony supporting its legacy systems, I disagree about the smoother transition statement. Sony supporting its "elder" systems as you call it has nothing to do with ease of user transition, its about Sony not wanting to axe its current cash cow. In a market where new consoles are sold at a loss, Sony was smart enough to continue its support for its legacy systems that are making a profit to offset the loss of the new console.......simple as that!

Game On...

I disagree. Whether this is Sony's point of view or not is irrelevant. There is indeed a smoother transition.
Say you like the the PS2's games, say GoW and GoW2. You're not really sure about the PS3 yet because it doesn't really have a title that you must have, so you buy a PS2 which is really cheap so the dent in the wallet isn't visible + GoW/2.
A year has passed, and there's GoW 3 for the PS3 plus a couple more titles you'd like. You can now buy a PS3 which is probably cheaper, thus evening out the price the PS3 from last year would be (because you did buy a PS2), plus you can still play your favorite PS2 games, so you didn't lose anything by buying the PS2 earlier, even after "its time".

Successful consoles have always had large life spans. 10 years for the PS3 looks doubtful at this point.

Sorry my friend but you are incorrect....The target group for buying legacy consoles are the late bloomers. Late bloomers arent concerned with the latest and greatest, they are
happily taking advantage of the huge affordable library of the legacy
system. Also you should know that late bloomers will not buy another console until the next console has fell bellow the $150 range (which may never happen with the PS3!!)....So your example of someone buying a PS2 just to experience a few games only to invest in a PS3 a year later is null and void.....

Late bloomers may be the epitome of a real gamer because they are only interested in fun, not hype, gaming trends, etc etc..

Game On...Â
