Why is everyone exclaiming that the wave of the future is digital distribution. I mean it;s a nice thought but there are too many limiting factors heres a list..

Bandwith caps. Now me I have comcast and we have an enforced bandwidth cap dictating that I can only use a limited amount of bandwith(150 gigs) before they shut off our service. Many companies that provide this service are following suit and this is horrible but deserves it's own thread.

DRM. I hate it you hate it but it's still there.

Personal Preference. Some people just like a hard copy rather than a digital one.

General Ignorance. People (general public) are idiots, and most of them don't care to learn of the potential benefits of it.

Internet Speeds. The internet isn't that fast,HD movie's are hard to stream let alone the times for downloading HD games which on average run about 6 to 8 gigs.

Although this isn't the most comprehensive list (I got lazy) you get the point; now please weigh in your opinions on that matter.

you have a 150 gig cap. Most games are approximately 5 - 6 or 7 gigs (Which is stretching it but I did it just to make you happy :)) You could download 10 - 20 games per month with online, play them all and stil have bandwidth left over.

Most games are getting bigger and bigger (Check into Id's Rage), and games are going multidisc on 360 like SO4, Blue Dragon, LO, etc.

Anyways, even assuming every game wa s6gigs, there is a storage problem...not to mention half the console owners aren't even online.

Digital distribution isn't mainstream yet, but it is more popular and useful now then it was 5 years ago. I buy 90% of my PC games via Steam so I do find it convenient when I dont feel like driving to my local Best Buy or Wal-Mart to get a game.

I think as time goes on, as internet speeds increase, as bandwitdh caps get bigger (or removed all together), I think digital distribution will become at least as popular as buying an actual disk. And who knows, maybe in 10-15 years from now, it'll be the only way to buy a game.

I would rather buy and download straight to HDD than buy a hard copy so if this comes to pass or you have the option of a hard copy or download that would be awsome.

Most games are gettign bigger and internet connections are getting faster and allowed bandwidth by ISPs are increasing yadda yadda ya. There is only a storage problem if the users don't delete their old games. Remember with DD you can always download them again if you want to play them. And if a console specifically sells games online a person who doesn't have an internet connection would be pretty stupid to buy the console don't you think? How many people are going to buy OnLive and not have an internet connection? I agree that DD is awhile away before it becomes the norm but it is definately heading in that direction.

The Delete them option is a poor option, because if you had a hardcopy, you wouldn't be posed with that problem. Also, Deleting it when you may want to play it in 5 years, nope. Gone.

We can't expect these companies to support these old games a decade from now. That's the biggest problem,

DD is coming, yes, I can feel it, but these problems need solutions first. Plus, paying the same price as retail stinks, when you get less with DD.

That's why I've bought all my DD games on sale, Steam has a sale every week on a different game. The thing with DD is company policies can change. As DD becomes more mainstream and there are enough arguments concerning the upkeep of old games companies will most likely keep the old games on their servers. Heck the Steam sale for this weekend is a deal on 4 different old games including the original Far Cry, Beyond Good and Evil and a couple others. And as it becomes more mainstream hardware will compensate and the solutions will come.

No more needs to be said after this.. ok maybe a little.. DD is A LOT more popular now than it was 5 years ago (using console years).. It'll most likely be A LOT more popular 3-5 years from now (again using console years). No one is saying that it'll completely dominate the market, however there will be more and more people using it as an option as opposed to today.. You can see it already it's just the hard heads are choosing to ignore it..

bandwidth caps are the only thing that is stopping dd from taking over and they will continue to get bigger. DRM like steam is much better than having to put the disk in every time to play the game and many retail games now have limited installs anyway so drm is no excuse. Some people like hard copies better some people like digital better it's all preference. If itunes is now the biggest music store and steam is by far the singe biggest seller of pc games I don't see the problem. DD is over 50% and rising every year of pc game sales. Internet speed is no problem, there is no game that you can't download overnight and most can be downloaded in a few hours with a decent cable connection.

this is another thing that make dd>>>>>>>>>>>>>>retail Ubisoft 24-Hour Sales Week on Steam March 23, 2009, 9:12 am - Valve - General Announcement Each day this week a select Ubisoft title will be available for a special price, beginning today with Assassin's Creed being offered at 50% off its regular price. Check the Ubisoft Publisher Page throughout the week for savings on additional Ubisoft titles. Unreal Tournament 3 Steam Sale Extended March 10, 2009, 4:18 pm - Valve - Product Update Free Weekend Encore Begins Friday Unreal Tournament 3 Black, the fully updated version of UT3 with the Titan Pack, has enjoyed an increase of over 2000% in simultaneous player numbers since its March 5th release and last week's Free Weekend on Steam. In addition, UT3 Black has claimed the number one spot on Steam's bestseller list. To celebrate the game's overwhelming success and meet the huge demand, the UT3 Black 40% off Steam sale has been extended through Sunday, March 22, and an encore Free Weekend of play begins this Friday via Steam. Pre-load for the encore Free Weekend begins today. For more information, please visit www.steamgames.com. You never get those sort of deals with retail and you sure never get free play weekends, yet steam has a awesome deal every singe weekend and has had awesome deals for the last week, only problem is when you buy them just before they go on sale. None of this is possible with retail, think of all the work it takes to make a game half price for one day then change it do another game. There is no way with retail you could ever let people play it for free for a weekend.

Steam allows you to buy games at retail, register them through the service and access digital copies just like you would Steam game bought through it. You are also allowed to make unlimited legal physical backups, which means you can have your oh so important case with disc on the shelf and the DRM used by Steam is registering with an account, nothing more.

Steam and DD is the wave of the future. If you can't adapt, tough luck.

THANK YOU honestly, theres no doubt in my mind that DD will be the future, but people are saying Bluray will fail and be replaced by DD. For that to happen DD would have to become mainstream within the next 2 years. For that to happen, the whole entire internet infrastructure in NA would have to be redone. And seeing as nothing like that is happening. DD won't become mainstream until then, I'd say give it 15 years.
