Steam%20logo.jpg

Its curious that one of the most noteworthy changes that video games have seen in the past decade is the evolution of video game and gaming related media sales, years of widespread, rampant and abrasive piracy all around and most particularly on PC led developers to explore different ways to prevent their games from being pirated into financial oblivion and digital distribution ended up being the most efficient way to fight it, with the notorious failures of some forms of DRM tested by multiple companies such as EA and UBISOFT, most publishers are now embracing the idea of digital distribution and following the example set by Valves Steam as the most notable online shop for games, which was in the end the best way to strip off ownership rights to consumers, I mean you can no longer trade in nor sell to a third party whichever game you purchase thus killing off any chances of sprouting a used game market within the platform and at the same time having to run all your purchases through the steam client, playing online exclusively through the steam client even if it leads onto other networks and updating only through steam (or other similar platforms aka Origin and the rest) turned out as nothing else but the most successful concealed apparatus of DRM created to halt the relentless strife of piracy.

PC gamers don't hate DRM they hate intrusive DRM that forces you to be online to play in singleplayer (Ubisoft) and DRM that runs the risk of ruining your DVD drive (Starforce)

I can understand that but its incredibly how far publishers and game studios were pushed in order to stop piracy and to an equal extent used game sales but thats more of a console problem, Piracy is the PC's biggest skeleton in the closet.

I still can play the games whenever I want, and it isn't like Valve is taking people's games away from them

I really don't even care

As long as DRM is not intrusive, I don't mind it. Valve's form of DRM is perfectly fine to me since by using Steam, I get access to a whole bunch of community features free of charge

Selling second-hand games became incredibly difficult for PC game with the onset of CD-Keys, forever ago. The second-hand market for PC has never been substantial, like it has for consoles.

Also, you don't have to update solely through Steam.

It's possible, but to me, STEAM is DRM done right, you only have to connect your game to steam ONCE, after that, the game's all yours

If developers werent paranoid about making PC games perhaps we still woundlnt have anything along the lines of steam.

Some do, to make it easier for the end-user.

^ Plus Console Piracy is just as rampart as PC, just it is harder to monitor console piracy then PC.

I think consoles do a better job at "hidden" DRM.

Actually most PC gamers like Steam DRM. I did a poll a bit ago on the PC forums asking PC gamers which version of a game they would go after; 1) A Steamworks DRM version or 2) DRM-Free version. I good 70% of them answered Steamworks over no DRM whatsoever. I prefer no DRM at all but I guess I'm okay with Steamworks.

I would voluntarily install and use Steam even if it wasn't "required" for my games.

Meh. who gives a sh!t about trading games when you can get them for around 3 bucks and even cheaper during a steam sale.If getting better sales prices is one of the things that killed the PC used games market then so be it.

I don't care about drm like that. It's the sh*t that's on Crysis and whatnot that bothers me. I was recently without internet for a couple weeks and not being able to play Crysis just because I was offline was frustrating as hell. Steam and origin type drm is barely there, do I don't really care.
