Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance Review AA

Almost too much of a good thing.

The game and its numerous systems are a complete time sink that allows you to spend dozens of hours building your perfect character, and then tempt you to do it again a few more dozen times. Disgaea 5 is the biggest and most satisfying installment in the series to date, and It could easily be the last one you ever need to buy.

With the release of this game I have to ask, who were those people saying PS4 would have a lack of quality games to play this holiday season? It seem PS4 has been getting high rated playstation only or exclusives games (Until Dawn being another AA exclusive) left and right this holiday and more diverse and in a higher percentage than the other 2 systems.

Disgaea is a great series that seems to never be mentioned. Glad to see the new one lives up!

It really is an amazing series, the game is basically a Halloween Strategy JRPG, and for that it's awesome.

Man , Disgaea 3 all over again , still , it's a game i'll enjoy untill Persona 5 and Star Ocean 5 come out.

They're too stupid to play games like this. They have to stick to the pick-up-and-play pew pews and simple sports titles.

It's a good game, lots to do.

The only thing that I don't agree with the review is the characters. I don't think they're as strong as the personalities of 4.

I'm about 70 hours in right now and it's still very enjoyable, it doesn't feel like I'm burning out on stuff.

I will say that many of the gameplay changes make this a clearly different Disgaea than any of the previous ones. It's almost like in D2 they made it super easy to grind on level boards and in this one it's more focused on the revamped item world.

Like srpgs, hate Disgaea, so no thanks.

What are there other srpgs?

These games more so than say Jagged Alliance or Xcom, or even something like Tactics Ogre or Valkyria Chronicles are less about tactics/strategy of using your different classes, and more so about a whole lot of min/maxing for weapons in item world, evilities, the more direct control sequences have annoying camera controls, and I'm not fond of that type of game.

Grinding isn't a difficult, it isn't anything that rewards thought or tactical play. It's how much of your own time do you want wasted for a carrot.

As far as the franchises brand of humor? Too internet and way too much of "look at us we're making fun of ourselves" humor that I'm not fond of either. The former because that stuff has a bit of shelf life on how long it even stays funny, the latter because in the realm of a video game it comes off "look at this shitty thing about our games right? Look at how we're still doing it". It's actually what I don't like about Sunset Overdrive that game makes a ton of jokes about video game tropes....and then proceeds to do them. Disgaea in its past incarnations is no different in that regard. 3 especially was annoying about that.

And i agree that the 4th wall jokes in 3 and 4 are a bit thrown in there , but the fact Disgaea 2 takes inspiration from KOF is so awsome , i can take the Haruhi feel of 3 and the Twilight jokes from 4.

You can just skip all the story , become an item world hermit , and bully the online.

Otherwise never played their other stuff, I tend to avoid anything with the word NiS on it it seems like. SRPGs are about the only style of jrpgs I almost always give a quick chance to though, jrpgs in contrast I'm infinitely more picky. I guess I'm more picky with my SRPGs than I thought lol.

Then i recomend Wild Arms XF on the PSP.

It's straght forward , no Scary Movie bullshit and the story missions throw a twist like reach a certain point on the map , or just defend a point.

And it's not NIS , but still , kind of bumed you don't at least play them for the mechanics.

I never heard of some of them, The PS2 game is easy to dismiss, I was in Jr. High/High School from 00-06, so allowance money and then minor dude job money can only buy you so much my friend. Easier to buy games these days, the PS2 games will be easier to hunt down. PSP one is more of an issue, because I don't own a PSP, and I don't really want to buy a Vita, because it doesn't have anything I want to play besides Tearaway and Gravity Rush.

Just so you know , only XF is SRPG , the PS2 versions are a mixed bag of semi-action and Valkyrie Profile type games in the Wild West.Haven't played the PS1 versions , but i think their clasic 90s RPGs.

Star Ocean 2 had an anime , so i asumed the series was based on it.

Yoru no Nai Kuni is being localized early next year so these more hopefully good jrpgs coming out before Persona 5

the vita version isn't confirmed for the west when localization was announced they only mentioned the ps4 version. i think they bring the vita version west when i went on koei tecmo twitter 75% of the people commenting were complaining about no vita version.

Im a huge Disgaea fan. I hope it will eventually get ported to Vita- even in Japan so I could import- so I dont have to get a PS4 just for two games, D5 and Bloodborne.

I had to take the uncharted collection off there, as I already own the games but wanted ps4 version as well as Samauri Warriors 4-2 ...alas too many good games, can't afford and I don't have the time for it either.

I still need to beat Disgaea 1,2,3, and 4. I have them all on my vita... Best place to play srpg, hopefully d5 gets a plus version for vita.

The Lemmings .... you know the ones that say Japanese made games aren't real games, so they don't count. They have been busting on PS all year, saying "no holiday lineup" ... Apparenly halo counts as like 5 games to some lems...

PS has a good variety of different genre exclusives and the top of the line for console multiplats.

Personally, this game's my only reason to get a Playstation 4 and even then, NIS is a pretty bad company as far as i'm concerned. :x

I may be wrong since I dont have much experience with their games but as far as I know the games developed by NIS itself are most of the time not entirely terrible, the problem is that NIS publishes hardcore otaku shit in the west developed by other companies like Compile Heart or Image Epoch and thanks to that NIS has gained a pretty bad name in the west.

They're also responsible for Cladun X2, which in turn created the superstition where if a Japanese game on Steam sells like crap, the developer in question will never make another PC game. A lot of people have clamored around and defended games like BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger and Final Fantasy XIII out of fear that their respective developers will lose faith in PC gaming if those games failed. Hell, I'll admit that I'm guilty of blindly burning my money on Rise of Incarnates out of a similar fear that PC gamers will never get a Tales game.
