I kid.. I kid.. put down the pitch forks and torches.

But seriously, Do you see yourself moving away from hard disc copies of games and more towards DLC. I've asked this question in the past but it seems a number of companies are seriously investing in DLC.

Personally I welcome DD as long as I can back it up on another device (just in case my system crashes). Besides It's more convenient for me to simply fire up a system and start playing rather than swapping disc's. Personal opinion of course.

What do you think?

Do you think M$, Sony, Nintendo (to a much lessor extent) will offer up a variety of Kinect, PSMove, games via DLC..

I dont mind DLC and I will pay for it if its good and adds more to the game. GTA4's DLC springs to mind here. But map packs and what not should be free.

I like DD if it allows access to downloading a game I can't get a hold of in the physical medium.

You know, if EA released a multiplayer-only downloadable version of Battlefield Bad Company 2 at half the price I would have bought it instead of the game.

I like Steam and the way it handles the content they sell off of it.

There are spectrums of quality. On one side we have horse armour and on the other we have the GTA DLC and Broken Steal. I am more than happy to shell out for the high quality DLC out there, but it is a shame that for every great piece of downloadable content, we have a few insurgency, resurgency packs that give the entire concept a bad vibe..

Well you can't really blame the devs if gamers are willing to purchase these packs.. I find it ludicrous to purchase a map pack for $15 for re-skins (basically) of an arena.

If there is a demand for it someone will supply it. Honestly I would seriously consider purchasing those two map packs if I still have MW2, even realizing a bad deal I played the game on a frequent enough basis for me to actually derive proper value from the money invested. Thats neither here nor there though.

..

I do think DLC is the way of the future, not in a instantaneous kind of way but a very subtle and constant evolution. I dont care about owning a game on disk, as long as I have access to it when I want I am quite happy. With Steam, some of the already present Sony and MS offerings, and the general popularity of Arcade titles I am pretty confident that we wil be seeing much more of this kind of stuff as time goes on (and I am quite alright with that).

I have no problem paying to download CONTENT (such as an expansion pack). The problem comes when they start charging for in-game money, costume changes, and map packs.

I don't mind DLC if it's good. I'd never pay for a map pack, but mainly because I'm not stupid enough to buy a game where they can get away with charging for map packs.

In terms of full retail games I actually buy the majority through Steam. It's just so much better for both me, and the developers of the games. Devs get substantially more money per game sold through digital services, and I get the most convenience from it. I've got games installed on multiple computers, so I can go to a friends house, and just hop on and play, and I get automatic updates, and amazing deals like what's going on now.

I used to care about hard copies a few years back, but after those first few times I bought a downloadable game it just stuck. So much better. I really hope the console makers/devs pursue it on that front.

sounds like OP doesn't know the difference between DLC, and digital distribution.

Digital Distribution is a means for distributing the game which I believe this thread is about. Developers like it because less piracy, and fans like it because it's an easy way to keep your games for years into the future.

DLC is downloadable content normally done by digital distribution. Developers like DLC because it's extra income that is almost always worth the effort financially. I think consumers are stupid though. They pay 1/4 of what they would for the full game, and only get 1/8 of the gameplay, and it's mostly recycled.

I agree...charging for map packs and ingame items is just an attempt to milk gamers of money. The majority of that stuff was probably taken out of the game for that purpose.

I will always prefer physical copies of a game, complete with manual and all. It's just so much more satisfying. I hate how a lot of physical copies of PC games nowadays have online manuals, so I won't be able to lay on my bed and comfortably read through the manual when not playing the game. It might sound irrelevant, but the digitalisation is taking the romanticism out of gaming. It's the same reason why I never download music.

For pc gaming DD became more convinient , easier and safer .You can download your game as many times you want in as many PC's you want and you can back-up your game if you dont want to redownload by either using the backup option or just by drag and drop game files into the backup storage of your choice

That's almost like saying you can't blame scam artists if people fall for their scams.

I don't like DD, as it removes any ownership and resale value from products you buy. Also, even though there is less cost on their end for distributing in this manner, that savings is rarely passed on to the consumer.

Difference being.. Most scams don't tell you what you're purchasing and leave out certain facts and or elude you into believing you're purchasing one thing and you get something entirely different. Thus.. a scam. You know exactly what the map packs, or extra levels or horse armor consist of and you know exactly how much it costs. It's the gamer who must press the BUY or PURCHASE button to take it to the next step.

my main 'dig' with DLC. Is that in years to come when the successor to PS3 and XBOX come out. Could we re-download our content like on steam. Or will it be like the current old PS2 and Xbox servers where they get shut down and any old content lost. So we have to start keeping full backups of all this media just to keep our DLC, in which case I would rather have it purchased on a disc.

If they are made by the users than they should be free. If a company spends time making the maps they there should be a charge. How else will they pay for the people making the maps.

DLC on consoles is not so much killing Steam as Steam is killing console's digital distribution and proprietary network services. I don't know if you realize, but everything you pay for on Xbox Live Gold is available for free via Steam on PC/Mac. And most games distributed on PSN and Xbox Live are also available on Steam. Also, a significant portion of the disc-based full game catalog on consoles is available on Steam, as well as a huge portion of disc-based retail PC games. The total catalog on Steam compared to console DD makes me lol. It's absolutely embarrassing for the console producers.

Things need to improve. I'm buying stuff on Steam solely because of these sales. When those aren't going on it's hugely unappealing. Now I get less for a lot less, which is agreeable. Typically you get to pay more (€49.99 vs €39.99 at retail) whilst being denied the ability to for instance gift the game to someone after you're done with it. This becoming the norm would not be very good at all.

I feel the same way in most cases but I rather have DB for my PC games (so I'm thankful for Steam). I would become a fan of DB for handheld titles if it was done right (cough cough Sony..PSPgo lol).

I'd never support a Sony/MS/Nintendo console that only offered DD, nor would I buy many games from such a service. When you buy from a PC DD, yeah, you have to download some program most likely to get your games. But the program is free and will run on any computer you put it on (games, obviously, have different requirements). If you buy from a console maker, you are now locked into their platform. So I won a PS3 now and perhaps next generation, I find MS's console more appealing. As soon as my PS3 breaks down, those games are long gone until I buy another Sony platform. So while I can buy another platform, that's the point- it costs money. The PC DD's program is free. I can buy an ATI card or an nVidia one. I can buy Intel or I can buy AMD. If ATI constantly produces crap, my games don't go down with them. Still, I'd like Steam to be taken down a notch (or rather, most of their marketshare disappears...but who's counting?)...just not by the console makers.

Yeah I guess we'll see console DD sales numbers and XBL subscriptions drop off dramatically now that Steam is "killing" them, instead of constantly going up like they usually do. Any day now...

I don't know if you realize, but everything you pay for on Xbox Live Gold is available for free via Steam on PC/Mac.
Brownesque

So Steam has features like voice/party/team chat, achievements, server joining, friends list, gamertag, reputation, play zones, etc. integrated into all of its games? Is there some new beta version of Steam that I don't have?

And most games distributed on PSN and Xbox Live are also available on Steam.
Brownesque

Is that a real statistic?
