Serious question, I want to get one but the thought of blowing $480+ on something that might breakdown in 4 months makes me cringe.... :x

It happened to a friend of mine. Apparently a couple of clamps melted and dropped some stuff on the board. Weird.

Yes. They changed the motherboard a bit, so it's less prone to the 3RL. But it still gets them.

But then again, that's what your 4 year warranty is for.

The clamps are either aluminium of steel in the 360. Do you have any idea how much temp is required to melt either of these two metals?

It isn't the clamps themselves, but the solder holding them there - that solder can have MP anywhere between 200 and 600 degrees depending on how cheap MS is.

You may want to consider building your own gaming PC. Its fairly easy because there are a ton of tutorials on the internet that show you how. Also there are people in the PC forums that will give you advice and point you in the right direction. It can appear to be a bit confusing with all the hardware choices, etc, but with a little studying, you will benefit from the knowledge that you would gain.

Most hardware for the PC that you buy comes with either a three year warranty or a limited lifetime warranty. Plus if you were to make your own gaming PC, it would be far more powerful than an Xbox. You could also use the Xbox 360 controller for games if you really wanted to.

Yeah, and building a decent PC would cost a lot more than $480 :( If he's scared of $480 for a machine with a 4 year warranty, I wouldn't recommend building a computer yet. And don't say the "you can get a good gaming computer for 400 bucks!" bullcrap.

360 Elite has the same chance of 3 rings of death as other 360's

Microsoft tried to alter the motherboard slightly to prevent the problem however at that point in time they didn't realise the majority of cases is caused by serveral other problems.

Ofcourse i have heard of Microsoft putting an extra heatsink in repaired units and they might be doing this to all units now. If they are infact putting in additional heatsinks their is a greatly reduced chance of the infamous 3 rings of death ...

Ohh and as a final note - you get a 3 year warrenty, if your console hasn't broken down in 3 years its proberly not going to for a long time -> if it does break down within 3 years well you get it replaced for free ... their is absolutly no reason to not get a 360 beucase of the 3 rings of death !
